Frederick Arthur Gross

Frederick Arthur Gross, 81, of Richmond, Texas passed away on September 1, 2019. Fred was born on June 20, 1938, in Junction City, Kansas to Clarence and Margaret (Cox) Gross. Fred attended Junction City High School and proudly served his country with 23 years of military service.

Fred was a lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and was an active board member on his Home Owner’s Association.

Fred is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sharon (Koska) Gross, whom he married on December 15, 1963; his two children Michael Gross and Vicki Daley; sisters Ruth Hall and Patricia Smith; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Final resting place will be at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Service will be held on September 16th, 2019 at 10:00 am, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, Kansas 66503.

Bradley Alden Riffel

Bradley Alden Riffel, 50, of Milford, KS, passed away Wednesday, August 21 2001.

Bradley was born in Wellington, KS on August 11, 1969, to Kathryn (Yaiger) and Dennis Riffel.

He served proudly in the U.S. Army.

Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2019, at Highland Cemetery in Wakefield, KS.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Carlson’s Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home and Cremation.

Raymond August Pageler

Raymond August Pageler, 84, of Wells Creek Community, in rural Belvue, Kansas, died Thursday, September 5, 2019, at the Westy Community Care Home in Westmoreland.  He was a life-long member of the community.

Raymond was born on the family farm in Wells Creek on March 23, 1935, the son of August and Hattie Soelter Pageler.  Raymond was a farmer and stockman, operating the family farm.  He also was an auctioneer for over thirty years and owned Pageler Auction Service.  Raymond also did welding for Luttig Welding in Emmett.

Raymond was a member of Immanuel Community Church at Wells Creek and served in many different positions over the years. He was a member of the Auctioneers Association and loved to play cards, especially Pitch.

Raymond married Elizabeth Wedel in November of 1958.  They were later divorced.  He then married Florence Neff-Kerwitz on June 5, 1975, at Wells Creek.  She preceded him in death on February 14, 2013.

Raymond is survived by his daughters, Syrena Pageler, Topeka and Patricia Tuck, Hoyt; his grandchildren, Jonathan Tuck, Bernard Tuck and Briann Nesbitt (Joel), all of Topeka, Nicholas Tuck (Jessica Arnwine), Kansas City, and Derek Tuck (Tristyn Wamego), Mayetta; and great-grand son, Landyn and baby Nesbitt due soon; and his sister, LaVern Pageler, Wamego.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lena Pageler.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, September 13, 2019, at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego.  Reverend Tim Pearson will be officiating.  Burial will follow at the Immanuel Community Church Cemetery.  Raymond will lie-in-state, on Thursday, beginning at 2:00 pm and the family will greet friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.  They suggest memorial contributions to Immanuel Community Church or The Parkinson’s Foundation, and those may be sent in care of the mortuary.

Ingrid E. Bowman

Update:

Ingrid E. Bowman, 76, of Junction City, KS died Friday, July 12, 2019 at Valley View Senior Life in Junction City, KS. Ingrid was born November 26, 1942 in Heidenheim, Germany and was the daughter of Eugen and Helene Tauer.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m., Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Johnson Funeral Home, Junction City.

Ingrid did all of her schooling in Germany. She started her apprenticeship program for a business degree and received her degree in Business Administration.

Ingrid worked for USD #475 as secretary at Custer Hill Elementary School for several years and later worked for the Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES).
During Ingrid’s tenure with AAFES, she worked as the General Manager’s secretary, EFA Manager, Stockroom Manager and Computer Operator. Ingrid retired from AAFES with over 20 years of faithful service.

Ingrid married George S. Bowman, Jr. on April 17, 1968 in Heidenheim, Germany. They were later divorced.

Her only surviving family lives in Germany. Locally she is survived by her ex-husband George Bowman and his wife Ellie, with whom Ingrid remained friends, Junction City; and a close friend, Jane Buskey, Junction City. Ingrid is also survived by her extended AAFES family and friends.

It was Ingrid’s wish to be cremated.

Juana “Jean” Gaerlan

Juana “Jean” Gaerlan, 97, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019 at Valley View Senior Life Center. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 10, 2019, at St. Xavier Catholic Church. Interment will follow the service at Fort Riley Main Post Cemetery. A visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. Monday, September 10, 2019. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Xavier Catholic Church or Arthritis Foundation.

Jean was born May, 16, 1922 in Batanga, Philippines the daughter of Gorgonio and Victoria Cervera.

Jean worked as a bookkeeper for many years in Junction City.  She worked for First Presbyterian Church and Waters Hardware Store. She later worked for Goad Motors and Wilcox Motors. She graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1940. She was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Marie Rene Valadez and her husband Fernando of San Antonio, TX; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Rita Santos; three nephews, Robert Cervera and his wife Gail, George Richard and wife Nancy and Vincent Santos and his wife Wendy; one niece Victoria Sue Lawson and her husband Roger; many other nephews, nieces and a host of friends and family.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Severo “Joe” and one sister, Clara Asis.

Hugh Franklin Emrich

Hugh Franklin Emrich, age 79 of Manhattan and formerly of Leonardville, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

He was born on July 6, 1940 in Salina, the son of Bernard and Genevieve (Fox) Emrich.

On August 21, 1959 in Tribune, he was married to Claudine “Kay” Smith.  She survives of the home.

Hugh was a man of many skills.  He was everything from a heavy equipment operator to a finish carpenter and helped start Emrich Family Creamery.  He was a true conversationalist and enjoyed geology and fishing.  He was a lover of art and an accomplished watercolorist.  In his earlier years, he was an Eagle Scout and had a keen interest in herpetology.

In addition to his wife Kay, he is survived by five children, H. Thayne Emrich and wife Shannon of Leominster, Massachusetts, Dagna D’Ercole and husband James Miller of Lawrence, Rambr Emrich and wife Margaret of Hollandale, Wisconsin, Amber Emrich of Leonardville and Natasha Emrich Behrens and husband Jeremy of Leonardville; a daughter-in-law, Angela Emrich of Milford, Nebraska; one sister, Viriginia Fuller of Longford; twelve grandchildren, Maxwell Emrich (Jordan Williams), Noah Emrich, Rory Emrich (Emma), Christian Emrich, Abby Emrich, Lilly Emrich, Kaylie Emrich, Levi Emrich, Eryn Emrich, Brynna Emrich, Lisa Emrich and Tristan Behrens and one great granddaughter, Daphne Emrich.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ragnar Emrich; his sister, Susan Fox and his great granddaughter, Isa Emrich.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastors Steve Ratliff and David VanBebber officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday.  Burial will be in the Riley Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Meadowlark Hills Foundation and left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Kathleen S. French

Kathleen S. French, age 68, of Manhattan, died Wednesday September 4, 2019 at her home.

Kathy was born on November 3, 1950 in Manhattan, to Michael J. and Patricia Morrand. She grew up in Ogden, Kansas and graduated from Luckey High School in 1968. She was a life-long member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ogden. On December 28, 1970 she was united in marriage to L. Steven French. They raised their three children in the Manhattan community and were very involved in their activities. Kathy worked for Southwestern Bell and Kansas Gas Service as a clerk for many years until she retired in 2012.

Kathy loved being a wife, mother, and grandma. She enjoyed her horses, traveling, working in her iris beds, and reading. Her most memorable moments involved spending time with her family and friends. When she wasn’t traveling, she enjoyed spending time at home on their hobby farm “The Franch”. Kathy’s fondest memories were of the family vacations and special trips she would take with her grandkids. Kathy had an infectious laugh, a wonderful sense of humor, and a beautiful smile. She enjoyed the simple moments of life and encouraged those around her to do the same.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents Michael J and Patricia Morrand and her sister, Patricia L. (Patsy) Mayginnes.

In addition to her husband Steve, she is survived by her children: Mark & Bobbi French of Manhattan, Scott & Deanell French of Manhattan, and Nikole & Joshua Patt of Denver, Colorado. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Alexis, Austin, Kaitlyn, Hunter, and Reagan; and her brother, Michael J. Morrand Jr., of Overland Park, Kansas.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 5:00 until 6:30 p.m. Sunday, September 8, 2019 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

A Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, September 8, 2019 at the funeral home following the visitation.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday September 9, 2019 at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ogden, with the Father Kerry Ninemire as the Celebrant. Inurnment will follow in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Ogden.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Homecare and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Floyd Vernon Bryant

Floyd Vernon Bryant, 83, departed this life on Monday, September 2, 2019, at the Salina Regional Health Center.   He was the son of Leslie Winfield and Mary Jane (Jones) Bryant. He was born November 21, 1935, at Carlsbad, New Mexico.   The family consisted of brothers, Lawrence, Charlie, Bee, and Lester; and five sisters, Marie, Edna, Lucille, Judy, and Joann.

Floyd chose to join the U. S. Army before he completed high school.  He served 12 months in Vietnam, and after twenty years of service in the military he retired at Ft. Riley, Kansas.  He worked twenty years Civil Service at a warehouse driving machinery and stocking supplies.

His hobbies and special interests were fishing, bowling, gardening, and his two puppies.

Floyd married Lois Madron on December 24, 1955, at Roswell, New Mexico.  They were the parents of one daughter, Cathy, and four sons, Joe, Randall, James, and Kelly. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lois; grandson, Chanse; daughter-in-law, Deanna; brothers, Lawrence, Charlie, Verbal, and Lester Bryant; five sisters, Marie London, Edna Doughty, Lucille Bolling, Judy Baker, infant sister, Joann, and his parents.

Cremation is planned.  Celebration of Life service at a later date.

Survivors are daughter, Cathy DeZago (husband-Ralph) of Herington; four sons, Joe Bryant (wife-Darla), Randall Bryant both of Marion, James Bryant (wife-Eileen) and Kelly Bryant (wife-Darcy) both of Herington; fourteen grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

Memorials have been designated to the American Cancer Society; and may be sent in care of Yazel, Megli, Zeiner Funeral Home-Herington Chapel, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS, 67449-3038.

Kenley Don Horton

Kenley Don Horton, age 30, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019.  There will be a visitation on Thursday, September 5, 2019 from 5:00- 7:00 p.m. at the Council Grove/Dunlap United Methodist Church in Council Grove. His funeral service will be held Friday, September 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., also at the United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Kenley Horton Memorial Fund, which will go towards his children’s education.

He was born on November 19, 1988 to Brad and Gail (Patterson) Horton of Council Grove. He married Samantha (Carson) Horton on April 30, 2016. He has a son, Hayden (age 9), and daughter, Haddie (age 1). He was a caring and loving son, husband, father, brother, and friend to everyone who knew him.

He was a graduate of Council Grove High School. He worked with his father at Bosch Furniture through high school. He continued to help run the business until his father’s passing. He then took over the business and renamed it Horton Home Solutions where he worked until his passing.

Kenley was a very active individual and in his spare time he loved, most importantly, to spend time with his two children teaching them about the things he loved. He loved making memories with family and friends, water skiing, snow skiing, and riding motorcycles and dirt bikes. Kenley was well known for his wittiness and ability to make others laugh and smile.

He was preceded in death by his father, Brad Horton and grandfathers, Don Horton and Dick Patterson.

He is survived by his grandmothers, Bert Horton and Bobbi Patterson; mother, Gail Horton; brothers, Kyle Horton, Cory Horton, Casey Horton, and Colby Horton; wife, Sam Horton; son, Hayden Horton and daughter Haddie Horton.

His smile, laughter, and love will always be cherished.

Ruth Mae Gallaway

Ruth Mae Gallaway, 96, Topeka died August 23, 2019. She was born December 6, 1923 in Dickinson County to Edward and Myrtle (Day) Horner.

Ruth was a graduate of Junction City High School. She was employed in food services most of her adult life. Ruth married Franklin Gallaway, Sr. in 1947. He preceded her in death in 1998. Also proceeded by daughter Cora Brown and son Franklin Gallaway, Jr, sister Eva Reese and brothers George and Ben Horner.

She is survived by daughters Bonnie Hoffman, Mary (Claude) Gillum and Ethel Wilson, sons LeRoy and George Gallaway,brother Charles (Laveta) Horner, 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Graveside inurnment was August 30 at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka.
