JCHS Basketball Teams Lose at Seaman

small blue jayThe games were close but in the end Topeka Seaman came away with a sweep over Junction City in boys and girls basketball Tuesday night at Seaman.

In the boys contest Junction City ( 7-10 ) rallied from an 11 point first half deficit and led by one after three quarters. But missed shots inside the paint early in the fourth quarter helped turn the tide in favor of the Vikings ( 13-5 ) as they rolled to a 64-55 victory over the Blue Jays.

Junction City coach Pat Battle said the only word he had for the loss was “disappointment.”

“Very disappointed when we needed to. We had some big big misses and they had some big big makes. They’re a really good team.”

TJ Poole had 19 and Ricardo Erans 16 points for the Blue Jays.

In the girls game Seaman ( 4-13 ) rallied from a 38-37 deficit to score the final four points of the game enroute to a 41-38 victory over Junction City ( 2-15 ).

Lady Jay coach Derek Petty said, “We didn’t finish the game very well. We got what we wanted. We got them to come out of the zone and they were chasing us around, and we ended up taking a bad shot. “That occurred with Junction City holding onto a one point lead in the closing minutes.

Kealee Rains and Briona Jensen had eight points apiece for the Lady Jays.

JROTC Blue Jay Battalion Takes First and More

Junction City finished first in the New Cadet Team category, and fifth place in the Unarmed Color Guard.

In the Individual Drill Down Cadet SFC Jawonnis Hinton finished third, and Cadet CPT Gary Panion fourth, Cadet CPT Alex Cochran eighth, Cadet SSG Sam Osenga ninth, and Cadet MAZ Mason Perez tenth.

Buzzer Beater Sinks Blue Jays

small blue jayDaishoun Fox hit a 3-point shot just ahead of the buzzer to lift the Highland Park Scots over the Junction City Blue Jays ( 7-9 ) 45-42 in basketball on Friday night at the Shenk Gym.

The game-winning shot came after Highland Park held the ball and the Blue Jays did not come out on the Scots defensively for approximately about two minutes late in  the game. Following two timeouts Highland Park then played the ball inbounds to guard Malik Keith. He got the ball to Fox who moved to the left wing and fired in the long-range shot to lift the Scots to the win.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle  said, “They got a good kid, and he dribbled in and shot it from 35-feet to win it. That’s basketball.”

Both teams ran a tough zone defense, hampering the offenses for much of the game.

The Junction City Lady Jays picked up their second win of the season with a 53-42 victory over Highland Park Friday night.

The Lady Jays led by 17 points before Highland Park rallied to within five. Junction City managed to widen the gap in the closing minutes.

Lady Jay coach Derek Petty stated,” We held on down the stretch. We settled down, made some free throws. I believe we shot over 70 percent, ( from the free throw line ) last I had checked. That’s definitely a positive.”

Friday evening was the Winter Homecoming night at JCHS.

Jamia Bell was named the 2016 Senior Queen of Courts, and Robert Long the 2016 Senior King of Courts during a ceremony between the Lady Jay and Blue Jay varsity basketball games.

Blue Jays Pull Away in Overtime to Win

small blue jayThe Junction City Blue Jays outscored Hayden 18-6 in the overtime period to defeat the Wildcats 64-52 at the Shenk gym Tuesday night.

The game was tied 46-46 at the end of regulation, but led by 10 points from TJ Poole in the overtime, Junction City was able to get the win.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle said, “That thing was tough as nails. They’re really a good team. Hayden plays with such discipline, they play really hard, they’re intelligent, and I thought we did a great job of showing and displaying our intelligence and playing intelligent basketball tonight, staying disciplined and being patient, and perservering.”

Hayden had an opportunity to win at the end of regulation but were unable to score in the closing seconds, sending the contest to overtime.

The teams traded baskets to begin the extra session, but then the Blue Jays pulled away. Both teams are 7-8 on the season.

TJ Poole led the Blue Jays with 27 points while Ricardo Erans had 21. For Hayden Deshawn Hanika had 16 points.

In girls basketball Hayden rolled to a 71-55 victory over the Lady Jays.

Hayden took charge in the second quarter by outscoring the Lady Jays 18-9 in that period. The Wildcats got 14 points from Preston Reid, while Junction city was led by 15 points from both Kealee Rains and A’kia Fain.

Hayden improved to 13-2 while the Lady Jays fell to 1-14.
