Blue Jays Sending Six to State Wrestling

Bob Laster
Bob Laster

Six Junction City Blue Jays will compete in the Class 6A State Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday at Hartman Arena in Park City.

Coach Bob Laster said they include Kade Danielson at 106 pounds, Max Bazan 113, John Clark 145, Kamari Smith 152, Aryus Jones 160, and Jeffery Walters at 220 pounds.

Laster took his team to Park City on Thursday, one day ahead of the tournament. “Main reason that we go down is they have weigh-in on Friday. It’s like at seven o’clock. If we did not go down early that means we would have to depart somewhere around 4:30 in order to get there.”

Laster also likes to get his team an opportunity to practice at least once at Hartman Arena before the tournament.

The Talk of JC, KJCK AM, will provide wrestling reports both days of the tournament with Kevin Griffith and Mike Goodwin. The first report is scheduled at 9:43 a.m. Friday.

JCHS Basketball Teams to Play Final Regular Season Games

small blue jayThe Junction City Blue Jays close out the regular season at Topeka West in basketball Friday night.

Coach Pat Battle expects it to be a tough game. “They might have the best player in the Centennial League in Jordan Newby. He’s 6’5, he can go inside, he can go outside, he’s athletic, he plays with a lot of spring in his legs. ”

The Blue Jays enter the contest 8-11 overall and 5-7 in the Centennial League, while Topeka West is 2-17.

In the girls game between Junction City and Topeka West Friday night both teams are 2-17 overall, while the Lady Jays are 1-11 in the conference and Topeka West is 0-12.

Both games can be heard on KJCK AM, The Talk of JC beginning with the girls contest at 6 p.m.

High School basketball teams will compete in substate tournaments next week.

Junction City coach Pat Battle said Manhattan ( 16-3 ) is an explosive team and to hold them under 60 I think is a pretty good job.

Blue Jays Outlast Emporia in Double Overtime

small blue jayThe Junction City Blue Jays ( 8-10 ) used as stingy zone defense to hold off the Emporia Spartans ( 6-12 ) 51-44 in double overtime Friday night at the Shenk Gym.

Junction City overcame cold shooting during the game and problems at the free throw line in the latter part of the fourth quarter and the overtimes to get the win, outscoring the Spartans 11-4 in the final overtime.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle said his team was not very good on offense. “Not that we couldn’t run things, we just didn’t hit shots. We were just ice cold, and it stayed that way with a few stretches and a few key big shots .”

Battle said the key to the win was the play  by Junction City on defense. “I think we really flustered them with the zone. Our kids worked very very hard, they were very active, and we got some big rebounds there in the second overtime.”

TJ Poole led the Blue Jays with 14 points in the contest.

In the girls game Emporia ( 13-5 ) rolled to a 62-42 win over Junction City ( 2-16 ).

Lady Jay coach Derek Petty said Emporia was a tough team. “They execute what they do very well. They take smart shots and protect the ball.”

A’kia Fain led Junction City with 11 points.

It was senior night at JCHS.
