Junction City finishes fourth in volleyball tournament at Tonganoxie

The Junction City Lady Jay volleyball team finished fourth out of ten teams in a tournament at Tonganoxie on Saturday.

Junction City went 3-1 in pool play, defeating Kansas City Piper, Tonganoxie and Kansas City Schlagle. they lost to Great Bend.

In bracket play the Lady Jays lost to Shawnee Mission Northwest 25-3, 25-17 and then lost to Eudora in the third place game 25-15, 25-17.  Junction City has a record of 10-9 on the season.

JCHS cross country runners compete in JV races at the Rimrock Invitational

Runners from Junction City High School were entered in the junior varsity races at the Rimrock Invitational near Lawrence on Saturday.

In the girls competition Mariah Parrott with the Lady Jays turned in a 33rd place finish in 23:56.0  Cassidy Eschliman 47th in 24:21.0, Malia Silva 62nd in 25:05.9 and Mia Perusich 92nd in 26:36.9.

In the boys JV race for Junction City, Tate Miller was 75th in 20:00.7, Kenlin Ortiz 96th in 20:26.4 and Hayden Perusich 176th in 22:08.9.

Blue Jays and Lady Jays competed in cross country in Alma this week

A group of Junction City High School and Middle School cross country runners competed in the Jason McKinney Memorial run in Alma this week.

Blue Jay Coach Ryan Norton said in the high school girls 5K varsity run Patience Okemba finished 19th in 27:39.64 while teammate Mya Silva was 21st in 28:33.53. Abigail Ticknor was 23rd in 28:50.58, Kayla McCollum 24th in 29:12.64 and Haley Sowder 25th in 30:53.53.  Leslie Rios was 27th in 31:19.23.

In the boys varsity 5K run Timothy Sifuentes finished 13th in 20:15.58, Kett Harter 29th in 22:02.85, Abner Gonzalez 30th in 22:08.41, Lavon Nichols-Powell 33rd in 22:38.52, Joseph Hill 37th in 22:55.85 and Francisco Fuentes 38th in 22:56.27.

Junction City finished second in the girls team scoring with 50 pints behind only Wabaunsee who finished with the low total of 15 points. In the boys race Wabaunsee was first with 26 points while Junction City was fourth with 111.

 

 

Blue Jays score winning touchdown with four-tenths of one second remaining in victory over Topeka High

Andrew Khoury rolled to his right and fired a pass into the right back corner of the end zone into the hands of Ethan Alcorn for the game winning score in a 48-41 victory over the previously unbeaten Topeka High Trojans at Hummer Sports Park in the capitol city.

The Blue Jays trailed 35-27 in the fourth quarter but led by the rushing of Russell Wilkey Junction City rallied to tie the game at 35-35. The Trojans led by senior standouts, running back Ky Thomas and quarterback Da’Vonshai Harden, responded with a four-play drive  that put Topeka High ahead 41-35 with more than four minutes remaining in the game.

The Blue Jays tied the game and then used their defense to stop the Trojans at the Topeka High 46-yard line. In the final 36 seconds Junction City moved to the 22-yard line, and then Khoury hit Alcorn in the end for the winning score.

Junction City improved to 3-0 in Centennial League play with the win and 4-0 overall, while Topeka High fell to 2-1 in the conference and 3-1 on the season.

Thursday night high school football finds a pair of unbeaten teams playing one another

The Junction City Blue Jays ( 3-0 ) and the Topeka High Trojans ( 3-0 ) meet on Thursday night at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka

This is a big early season game. Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman expects it to be exciting. “There’s going to be a lot of people paying attention to this game. You’ve got the number two ranked team in Topeka High and we’re starting to get some attention a little bit, just the talent that Topeka High has, and the number of commitments they already have to Division One.  Everything is here to be an exciting night for sure.”

You can hear the game on 107-9 FM and 1420 KJCK. The pregame show will begin at 6:30 p.m. with kickoff at 7 p.m.

 

High School football classifications and enrollments for 2020 & 2021

Junction City and Manhattan remain in Class 6A in the Kansas State High School Activities Association football classifications and enrollments for 2020 and 2021.

Enrollment numbers are based on ninth, tenth and eleventh graders only.

The range for the 32 schools in Class 6A is 1,854 down to 1,092. Junction City has the 28th highest enrollment at 1,136 students in the three grades combined.  Manhattan has the 13th highest enrollment at 1,402 students. Wichita East the highest overall at 1,854 students.

Hutchinson will move from 5A into 6A and Olathe West will go from 6A to 5A.

Lady Jay tennis competes in Manhattan quadrangular

The Junction City Lady Jay tennis team competed in a quadrangular hosted by Manhattan on Monday. Junction City was unsuccessful in winning a match against the tough competition. Competing for the Lady Jays were Krysta Talley and Erlinne Thornton in singles and the combinations of Anna Torres and Sierra Stage in one doubles, and Avery Jacobsen and Lucy Rivera Ramirez at two doubles.

The Lady Jays compete in the Salina South Invitational on Thursday beginning at 3 p.m.

Lady Jays finish third in the William Chrisman Volleyball Tournament

The Junction City Lady Jays defeated Harrisonville, Belton and Grandview, Missouri high school volleyball teams Saturday in a tournament hosted by William Chrisman High school in the Kansas City area.

Coach Basil Nevill said in pool play Junction City defeated Grandview 25-17, 25-12 and split with Raytown 21-25, 25-20 and with Kansas City Christian East 21-25, 25-23.

In bracket play Junction City defeated Harrisonville 25-10, 27-29, 26-24, lost to Nevada 18-25, 18-25 and defeated Belton 23-25, 25-21, 25-19

Junction City is 7-6 on the season. The Lady Jays play in Tonganoxie this Saturday.

Blue Jays roll to third win of the season

The Junction City Blue Jays scored on a 33-yard touchdown pass play from Andrew Khoury to Jo Jo Nieves and a 47-yard punt return for a touchdown by Nieves to take early control against the Topeka West Chargers at Al Simpler Stadium. Junction City went on to defeat the Chargers on Tribute to the Troops Night 41-0.

Despite the shutout there is plenty of room for improvement for the Blue Jays who sputtered at times in the ballgame. Coach Randall Zimmerman said he was happy for the Blue Jays, who are 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Centennial League play, But the coach added the team has a lot to work on. “We did not play at our best, we did not. I don’t think we moved forward from a week ago.”

Junction City will play a 3-0 Topeka High football team Thursday evening at Hummer Sports Park in the capitol city. Topeka High defeated Highland Park 60-8 Friday night.
