The Junction City Blue Jay home baseball games scheduled Monday against Garden City have been postponed due to wet weather.
They have been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 3 at 3 p.m.
The Junction City baseball team scrimmage was scoreless after three inning, but over the course of the next three innings the Black team, comprised of varsity players put 13 runs on the board to win 13-0.
Numerous pitching and hitting combinations were used and at times varsity pitchers spent some time on the mound for the junior varsity Blue team in this scrimmage, played before a strong turnout of fans at Rathert Field.
Blue Jay coach Pat Stivers said he thought his team did some good things. “I thought we got some good pitches to hit, we hit some balls hard that the defense made good plays and caught. I’m encouraged by what I saw offensively tonight.”
Junction City opens the season by hosting Garden City in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Monday.
Alana Kramer of Junction City High School has been named Second Team All-Centennial League in basketball.
Also for Junction City, Briona Jensen received All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Scott Mall of Manhattan was named Coach of the Year, Carly Bachelor of Washburn Rural Player of the Year and Camryn Turner of Seaman Newcomer of the Year.
A member of the Junction City Blue Jay boys basketball team A.J. Dickerson, has been named to the 2nd Team All-Centennial League squad.
Also for Junction City, Xavier Cason, received Honorable Mention All-League recognition.
The 1st Team All-League unit included Zach Harvey of Hayden; Jordan White, Washburn Rural; Larry White, Topeka High; Koriyon Carr, Topeka West; Trey Duffey, Seaman; and Dylan Farr, Emporia.
Raeshon Riddick of Manhattan was named Newcomer of the Year, Koryon Carr of Topeka West Player of the Year, and Rick Bloomquist of Topeka West Coach of the Year.
A.J. Dickerson was named the Top Offensive Player and Team MVP. He is a junior at JCHS.
DeAndre Eaves was the Defensive MVP for the squad.
Xavier Cason was the recipient of the Best Teammate award, Tye Dale the recipient of the Most Charges Taken for the varsity and Luke Hughes for the junior varsity. Leslie Etheridge was the most improved player.
The Junction City varsity team went 7-14 this past season, a three-game improvement from one year earlier.
The Junction City Blue Jay boys bowling team placed sixth in the Class 6A State tournament on Thursday at the North Rock Lanes in Wichita.
According to the JCHS, Tyler Gromlovits of Junction City finished fifth and medaled in the individual competition.
The Lady Jay bowling team finished in ninth place. Chloe Lovell of Junction City placed 12th in the individual competition, which was good enough to medal.
The Derby Panthers controlled their first-round boys basketball substate tournament game against Junction City from start to finish Wednesday night. They wound up with a 76-32 win over the Blue Jays.
The Panthers hit nine three-point shots in the first half and led by 32 points at halftime. There was a running clock the entire fourth quarter because Derby led by more than 30 points.
Blue Jay Coach Nick Perez said, yes it was a tough loss. “They shot lights out, but we didn’t a very good job defensively. Everything that we practiced I felt like we forgot.” Perez added he thought his team tried to compete better in the second half.
This was the second meeting of the season between the two teams. Derby won the first time 73-68 in January. The Panthers ( 17-4 ) will advance to the substate championship game against Garden City Saturday night. The Blue Jays finished the season with a record of 7-14.
The Wichita East Blue Aces ( 17-4 )defeated the Junction City Lady Jays 61-28 in the first round of their Class 6A Substate Basketball Tournament Tuesday night in Wichita.
The loss ends the season for Junction City ( 5-16 ) . Wichita East will advance to the substate championship game Friday night against Washburn Rural.
Coach Derek Petty of Junction City saw his team stay with the Blue Aces early in the game. But then Wichita East moved out to a 25-13 lead at halftime and never trailed the rest of the way. “I thought we attacked the basket and got fouls, but then we missed free throws and then after that we started settling for jump shots.”
Petty added, “We have to attack the basket and take jump shots when we’re open when they’re collapsing to help on the drives. That’s part of the process of us learning basketball, not just being on the floor playing, knowing the game.”
The Blue Jay boys play in the substate tournament Wednesday night at Derby. You can hear that game on 1420 KJCK, The Talk of JC. Tipoff is scheduled at 7 p.m.
The Junction City Lady Jays ( 5-15 ) have drawn Wichita East ( 16-4 ) as an opponent in the first round of a Class 6 Substate Basketball Tournament. The Lady Jays will play at Wichita East at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
In the other half of the tournament bracket, Lawrence Free State ( 5-15 ) will play at Washburn Rural ( 16-4 ) Tuesday night. The tournament championship game is Friday night on the court of the higher seeded team.
The Junction City Blue Jays ( 7-13 ) will face a familiar opponent in the first round of the Class 6A Substate Tournament Wednesday night. The Blue Jays will play at Derby ( 13-6 ) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The other first-round game in that substate has Haysville Campus ( 8-12 ) at Garden City ( 12-8 ) on Wednesday. The championship game will be Saturday night on the court of the higher seeded team.
Derby defeated Junction City 73-68 in the McPherson Invitational Tournament in January.
