Season Ends for Blue Jays

The Junction City Blue Jays saw their football season come to an end with a 25-15 loss to the Dodge City Red Demons Friday night in the first round of the Class 6A postseason playoffs.

Dodge City jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead and never trailed in the contest, although the Blue Jays pulled to within four at 19-15 in the third quarter. But the Junction City rally stopped there as the Red Demons tacked on a fourth quarter touchdown on a 10-yard run by John Johnson to go up 25-15.

Two fumbles and stalled drives were costly for Junction City in the ballgame. Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman said the team had opportunities to win, but there were the two first half fumbles. ” Did not get started offensively at all. Defensively I thought we played very very hard. We were just out there too long.”

Junction City finished the season with a final record of 4-5, and on a three-game losing streak. Dodge City improved to 6-3, and will advance to the second round of the playoffs against Derby ( 9-0 ).

Lady Jay Volleyball Falls to Gardner Edgerton in Substate

The Junction City Lady Jay volleyball team lost to Gardner Edgerton in their Class 6A Substate Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at Wichita Southeast High School.

Gardner-Edgerton won by the scores of 25-6, 25-19. The Lady Jays finished their season with a record of 11-23.

Gardner-Edgerton went on to win the substate championship after defeating Liberal in the championship match.

Two JCHS Cross Country Runners Qualify for State Meet

Stephany Lechuga and Juan Tovar of Junction City High School have qualified for the Class 6A State Cross

Country meet Saturday, October 27th at Rimrock Farm near Lawrence.

Junction City cross country teams competed in the Class 6A Regional meet in Manhattan this past Saturday. Lechuga finished 12th in the girls race in 20:46.08. Tovar finished 17th in the boys race in 17:21.02

In the team competition Manhattan won the girls meet title with the low score of 32 while Junction City finished seventh with 172 points. On the boys side Lawrence Free State claimed first place with 51 points while Junction City was eighth with 210 points.

For the Blue Jays other runners and their finishes included Kenlen Ortiz in 47th in 19:32.45, Adrian Robles 50th in 19:46.84, and Hayden Diestelkamp 52nd in 20:17.60.

For the Lady Jays Kaydra Baer was 27th in 21:41.56, Cassidy Eschliman 36th in 22:29.26, and Laynee Chasee 47th in 23:49.97.

Blue Jays Draw Dodge City in Class 6A Postseason Playoffs

The Junction City Blue Jays will travel to Dodge City to play the Red Demons in the first round of the Class 6A postseason playoffs Friday night ( Oct. 26 ).

Dodge City finished the regular season with a record of 5-3 while the Blue Jays are 4-4.

Other first-round playoff matchups include Manhattan ( 7-1 ) hosting Wichita Southeast ( 2-6 ), and Chapman ( 6-2 ) hosting Clearwater ( 4-4 ) on Friday night.

Pink Out Night at the Blue Jay Football Game

JUNCTION CITY, KAN. – Geary Community Hospital and Junction City High School are teaming up to host a breast cancer awareness “Pink Out” night at Al Simpler Stadium during the football game on Friday night. This is the first year GCH has sponsored a game to raise awareness of breast cancer.

In addition to the Junction City fans wearing pink, the football team will be wearing pink socks, coaches will be wearing pink hats, the band drum majors wearing pink plumes, the color guard will have pink flags, and the cheerleaders will be waving pink pom-poms. All game attendees are encouraged to join in the “Pink Out” and wear pink in some fashion.

Blue Jays – Lady Jays Compete in Centennial League Cross Country Meet

The Junction City Blue Jay boys varsity cross country team finished seventh out of nine teams in the Centennial League meet in Emporia on Saturday.

Junction City finished with 179 points, while Washburn Rural finished first with the low team score of 34 points.

For Junction City Juan Tovar finished 16th in 17:41.1 while Alex Seelye was 30th in 18:48.4, Carlos Lozano 42nd in 19:27.2 and Dale Yain 43rd in 19:34.7.

In the girls varsity race Junction CIty finished fifth out of nine teams wit ha score of 142 points. Manhattan finished first with the low total of 24 points. Stephany Lechuga of Junction City turned in a sixth place finish in 21:03.1 while Kaydra Baer was 28th in 22:48.6, Cassidy Eschliman 29th in 22:48.6, an Murin Burkett 38th in 24:44.3.

Seaman Stuns Junction City in Football

The Seaman Vikings ( 3-4 ) used a controlling ground attack and their offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage enroute to a 21-20 victory over the Junction City Blue Jays ( 4-3 ) Friday night.

The loss for Junction City came one week after a big win over third-ranked Manhattan.

Junction City coach Randall Zimmerman agreed Seaman dominated running the football against the Blue Jays. “Lack of emotion, lack of intensity, lack of physicality, lack of competitiveness from us. ” Zimmerman said the message to the team this week was that the win over Manhattan could not be allowed to defeat the Blue Jays against Seaman. The coach noted Junction City did not practice well this week.

Russell Wilkey ran 27 yards for a touchdown and caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Rooster Adams in the game. Junction City hosts Emporia next Friday.

Blue Jays Contribute to Fifth Street Playground Equipment Effort

Five members of the Junction City Blue Jay football program worked Thursday morning in the 5th Street Park to help install new playground equipment.

It is part of the effort led by the Play for All committee to upgrade facilities in the park.

Blue Jays Enjoy the Big Win

The Junction City Blue Jays enjoyed their win over Manhattan Friday night at Al Simpler Stadium.

Junction City was presented with the Sportsmanship Trophy and the Great American Rivalry Series championship trophy as a result of the 9-7 win over the Indians.
