Blue Jays roll past Wichita Southeast in first round playoff win

The Junction City Blue Jays opened up a 27-0 halftime lead and were never threatened during the final two quarters in a 48-21 win over the Wichita Southeast Golden Buffaloes Friday night. The win came at Al Simpler Stadium in the opening round of the Class 6A postseason playoffs.

Blue Jay quarterback Andrew Khoury threw four touchdown passes while receiver Quavez Humphreys was on the receiving end of two of those scoring strikes while Ethan Alcorn took one pass 71 yards into the end zone. Jo Jo Nieves of Junction City returned a punt for touchdown as well.

The game was hard hitting but also could be described as chippy at times with multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties assessed on the two teams.

Junction City,( 7-2 ) will advance to play at Dodge City in round two of the playoffs next Friday. Dodge City ( 9-0 ) defeated Haysville Campus Friday night 34-13. Wichita Southeast ended their season with a final record of 3-6.

JCHS coach Ryan Norton felt his team did well in the meet. “Probably a little bit below where we wanted to be today, but overall we’ve been kind of limping through the last couple of weeks here trying to get through this week here with our athletes. We had a nice showing for where we have been this year and where we started off.”

Blue Jays fall for second time in 2019 football season

Jo Jo Nieves returned a kick more than 70 yards for a touchdown to bring Junction City to within one point at 14-13 against Emporia. But the Spartans blocked the extra point kick, took control of the football following the kickoff and never gave it up again. Final score Emporia 14 Junction City 13.

Emporia improved to 5-3 while the Blue Jays fell to 6-2 with the loss.

The Blue Jays were flagged for a number of holding penalties in the game and also fumbled the football away at the Emporia one-yard line in the first quarter. This game didn’t go Junction City’s way. Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman agreed. “No it did not. We should have won it. We had all kinds of things going on. We weren’t executing in the first quarter and I think that gave them enough hope. They’re big, strong physical kids and they started leaning on us.”

The coach added, “Our defense was out for way more snaps than we should have been. They’re just good at what they do. They’re very very disciplined, they played very hard, they’re all very strong kids.”

Junction City will host Wichita Southeast in the first round of the Class 6A postseason playoffs next Friday night at Al Simpler Stadium.
