The Topeka Capital-Journal (https://bit.ly/16H077N ) reports Kansas State officials initially planned to cook about 75 pounds of thick-sliced bacon. But that amount grew to 300 pounds after the pork promotion blew up on Twitter, Facebook and the Internet.

Under the promotion, students with identification will be admitted free to the game and will be rewarded with a “boat of bacon.”

(AP) — A northeast Kansas prosecutor says he’s considering a run for the U.S. Senate next year as a Democrat.

Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor confirmed Friday to The Associated Press that he plans to form a committee to explore a bid for the seat held by veteran Republican Pat Roberts.

Taylor said he’ll make a formal announcement on his 40th birthday Monday. He declined to discuss details until then.

Taylor is the first Democrat to publicly announce an interest in the race. He’s been district attorney of the county that includes Topeka since 2009.

Roberts has held the Senate seat since 1997. He faces Republican primary opposition from Leawood radiologist Milton Wolf.

Red Sox Win World Series

The Boston Red Sox are celebrating their third World Series championship in 10 seasons. The bearded bunch did it with a 6-1 victory over St. Louis in Game 6, the first time the Bosox clinched a World Series at home since 1918. It’s the eighth title for the Red Sox and comes one year after the team finished dead last in the American League East.baseball

General manager Ben Cherington overhauled his roster during the offseason, so it seems only fitting that all six Boston runs were driven in by first-year Red Sox. Shane Victorino had been 0-for-10 in the series before he opened the scoring with a three-run double in the bottom of the third, one inning before he delivered an RBI single. The other runs came on Stephen Drew’s solo homer and Mike Napoli’s RBI single, both coming in the fourth.

Another first-year Bostonian closed out the victory as Koji Uehara (oo-ay-HAH’-rah) worked a perfect ninth, ending the series by striking out Matt Carpenter.

World Series MVP David Ortiz was 0-for-1 with two runs scored and four walks, three intentional. He ended up with a .688 batting average, a .760 on-base percentage, two homers, six RBIs and seven runs scored in the Fall Classic.

John Lackey earned a World Series-clinching victory for the second time in his career, 11 years after helping the Angels beat the Giants in Game 7. Lackey worked in and out of trouble for much of his 6 2/3 innings, surrendering nine hits but only one run while striking out five.

It was a tough night for Cards rookie Michael Wacha (WAH’-kah), who entered the game with a 1.00 ERA in 27 postseason innings. Wacha was chased with two out in the fourth and charged with six runs on five hits and four walks.

Boston’s victory ends the National League’s three-run reign as World Series champs. It also allows many Red Sox to become reacquainted with their razors.

Opera House Director Submits Resignation

The director of the C. L. Hoover Opera House is resigning at the end of the year.opera

Mary Louise Stahl has submitted her resignation, effective December 31.

Stahl said in August of next year the LP Management Board that was the limited liability partnership established when the Opera House opened goes away.  The Opera House will then become a full 501-C3 nonprofit organization at that time. Stahl noted it’s never been her goal to stay forever. “I think they need to bring on board the person who has the skill to do the kind of fundraising and program development that’s necessary for a 501-C3. ” Stahl added, “It was just time to pass the baton to the next energetic runner.”

Stahl has served as the Director of the Opera House since October of 2011. She said will continue to be involved with the Opera House.

During her time in the director’s post there have been some good accomplishments. “I think that one of the things that is different than when I came in is the range of classes that we offer at the Opera House.  We’re not strictly a performance venue, bringing in shows for the evening. But we have things offered throughout the day for all age groups.”

Stahl noted a “crowning glory” for her is to have all of the fine arts agencies under one roof. “That doesn’t mean that everything’s perfect yet, but we have the opportunity now to move forward.

Stahl also praised the display of the Rolfs art collection within the building “as magnificent.”

Manhattan Man Faces December Sentencing in Shooting

Manhattan AP –  Reports say that the sentencing date for 43-year-old Matthew Wilson is set for Dec. 12 in Riley County. Wilson pleaded no contest Friday to one count of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery.
Prosecutors say Wilson began shooting in April as four people left a Manhattan apartment. Twenty-two-year-old Army Sgt. Michael Lowery was killed while two women and a man were wounded. Authorities said Wilson also unsuccessfully tried to make his way into a bedroom where a man had been asleep with his significant other and the couple’s small child.
Wilson lived in the apartment building and told a witness that he was tired of the guys partying.

On the impact of their return both on the field and in leadership Bill Snyder noted, “You would anticipate that it would have a big impact. I didn’t see during the course of the week anybody make any kind of an issue about it. It was just, this is what your supposed to do. You’re here, so let’s go.” Concerning their on-field play Snyder added, “Obvious, I mean just based on their performance, and the catches that they made it was significant for us, you know very, very beneficial. ”
