Kansas Senate panel to discuss education budgets

CapitolTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas Senate committee is preparing to review spending recommendations for public schools, state universities and community colleges.

Wednesday’s Ways and Means Committee agenda includes discussion of a legislative response to the state Supreme Court’s ruling on school finance and Gov. Sam Brownback’s request to increase funding for all-day kindergarten.

The panel expects to hear subcommittee reports on K-12 schools and the six Board of Regents universities. Legislators have already approved base budgets for all of education for the fiscal year starting July 1.

The reports will recommend how much, if any, legislators should increase funding for initiatives sought by Brownback and the regents, such as restoring salary cuts made last year.

No consensus on notifying victims of data breaches

computer crime cyberERIC TUCKER, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The data breach at Target has refocused attention on the patchwork of state consumer notification laws — and it’s renewed a push for a national standard.

Most states have laws requiring retailers to disclose data breaches, but those laws vary.

Consumers in one state might immediately be told that their personal information has been exposed. But that might not happen elsewhere.

Requirements for businesses depend on where companies are located.

Attorney General Eric Holder has joined the call for a nationwide notification standard.

Consumer groups don’t want to weaken existing protections.

Retailers want laws that are easier to comply with and say that too much notification isn’t necessarily the best way.

Congress is exploring how a federal standard should be enforced and what the threshold should be for notification.

Chiefs’ Dream Season Ends in Tough Fashion

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – In many ways, it was a dream for Kansas City, going from 2-14 and the first pick in the NFL draft to 11-5 and a spot in the playoffs. Yet it ended in just about the most nightmarish way possible, a second-half collapse in Indianapolis.football clip art

No wonder the Chiefs had such a hard time summarizing their season in the minutes and hours after a gut-wrenching 45-44 loss to the Colts on Saturday.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Sunday that players “had their hearts ripped out.” It was the eighth straight playoff defeat for the franchise, which still hasn’t won a playoff game since 1993.

Reid promised the Chiefs would assess the season and then turn attention to next year, when they hope to finally end their playoff skid.
