Fort Riley Soldier Wins Marine Corps Marathon

Fort Riley Public Affairs officials have reported that SPC Samuel Kosgei, Fort Riley, has won the Marine Corps Marathon. His time was 2:23.53.

In addition, U.S. Marine and 1964 Olympian Billy Mills from the University of Kansas was inducted into the Marine Corps Marathon Hall of Fame.  Mills won the gold medal in the men’s 10 thousand meter run.

The David and Karla Butler has been named the 4-H Family of the Year in Geary County.

They were honored during the annual 4-H Awards banquet in Junction City. Some of the other award recipients included:

–Macie Muto as the recipient of the Rob Smith Citizenship Award

–Jaydon Zima, Key Award

–Dewey Terrill, 4-H Appreciation Award

–Mark and Resia Muto family,  2016 International 4-H Youth Exchange Host Family

–Lindsey Ascher, Calen Boller, Mason Muto and Jaydon Zima, 2015-16 Youth Ambassadors

–Kaitlyn Butler and Lauren Moon, 2016-17 new 4-H Ambassadors

In the 4-H scholarship recipients category those recognized included:

Preliminary Hearing Scheduled in Binnick – Marshall Case

A November 23 preliminary hearing has been scheduled in Geary County District Court for two men in a September 4 case that included an officer involved shooting.

Deputy Geary County Attorney Chris Biggs confirmed the Sheriff’s Department Deputy that was involved in the incident has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Dylan Binnick, 19, is charged with two counts of Attempted Murder in the First Degree stemming from the case where he is accused of allegedly attempting to draw a gun on two Sheriff’s Deputies.

Noah Marshall, 18, is charged with Conspiracy to Commit Murder in the First Degree in the same case. Both defendants are from Beatrice, Nebraska.

Binnick was shot and wounded during the incident which occurred in the Skiddy Road – Skiddy West area, and was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka where he was treated. No surgery was required.

The Londeen Funeral Chapel, Chapman, announces the death of Kathryn Esther Rosalie Strom Rogers.  She passed away October 17th at Chapman Valley Manor.

The Funeral Service will be at 2:30 p.m. this Saturday, October 22 at the Parkerville Baptist Churchh.  A meal will be at noon prior to the service.  Burial will follow the service in the Parkerville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Parkerville Baptist Church or Chapman Valley Manor sent in care of the Londeen Funeral Chapel, Box 429, Chapman, KS 67431.

K-State Morning Kick at Iowa State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference and FOX Sports announced Monday that Kansas State’s October 29 contest at Iowa State will kick off at 11 a.m., and be televised by FSN.

 

The contest at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames marks K-State’s third-consecutive 11 a.m., kick following games at Oklahoma and this weekend against Texas. K-State has won eight straight against the Cyclones and 22 of the last 26 meetings dating back to 1990. Although the Wildcats are riding an eight-game winning streak in the series, the average margin of victory in those games is 8.75 points, while the Wildcats have won the last two games at Iowa State by a combined 10 points.

Take Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs

jcpd threeThe Junction City Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

You can take your pills for disposal to the Junction City Police Department at 210 East 9th Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday ( October 22 ).

The JCPD and DEA cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills and patches. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

New IACH Emergency Department Opens Sunday 6 a.m.

new iachFort Riley officials have announced that beginning Sunday ( October 16 ) at 6 a.m. patients in labor or with an emergency should go to the new Irwin Army Community Hospital at 650 Huebner Road.

Outpatient care and services begin in the new hospital at Fort Riley on Monday ( October 17 ).

A tornado watch and severe thunderstorm warnings dominated the weather pattern in the region Tuesday evening. Rain fell in Junction City but the city was never under any warnings. There were severe thunderstorm warnings for northern Dickinson County, northwest Geary,  Clay, southwest Riley County and southwest Morris County.

The National Weather Service reported from the Clay County Emergency Manager that there was damage to a few structures, likely agricultural buildings, from 22nd to 25th Road from Utah to Valley View in Clay County. The
