Kansas Defeats TCU

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Peyton Bender threw two touchdown passes to Pooka Williams, the Kansas defense forced a fumble at its own 6-yard line with 58 seconds left and the Jayhawks held on to beat TCU 27-26 on Saturday to end a four-game losing streak.

The Jayhawks (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) took the lead on Williams’ touchdown grab with 6:13 to go, but TCU (3-5, 1-4) and first-time starter Michael Collins breezed downfield in an attempt to answer it.

Collins converted a third-down pass to give the Horned Frogs first-and-goal at the 9-yard line, and Darius Anderson got the ensuing carry. The ball popped out when he hit one of his own lineman and the Jayhawks clearly recovered, even though the officials initially called Anderson down.

The replay gave Kansas the ball. And after Bender took a safety to drain all but one second from the clock, the Jayhawks covered the ensuing squib kick to seal the win.

Bender finished with 249 yards passing and Williams had 102 yards receiving in giving the Jayhawks just their second Big 12 victory under embattled coach David Beaty. It also was the first win against the Horned Frogs since 1997, long before the schools became Big 12 rivals.

Collins had 351 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception, and Jalen Reagor had eight catches for 177 yards, as TCU lost its third straight and fifth in six games.

Perhaps it shouldn’t have been surprising that the Horned Frogs and Jayhawks played a back-and-forth game that went down to the wire. Even though TCU had won all six conference meetings, five had been decided by two touchdowns or fewer.

Kansas struck first by marching 75 yards for a touchdown, but the Horned Frogs’ defense stiffened the rest of the half, allowing just 14 yards the rest of the way.

But with Collins making his first start, the TCU offense struggled to capitalize, and it took a long touchdown pass to Reagor just before halftime to give the Horned Frogs a 10-7 lead.

Both offenses finally found a rhythm in the second half.

Williams caught his first touchdown pass to give Kansas the lead, then Collins scored his first TD to give the Horned Frogs the lead back. Gabriel Rui added a pair of field goals for the Jayhawks, and TCU answered with a 75-yard drive that Collins capped with another short run.

Kansas pulled ahead once more on its ensuing drive, when Bender converted a pair of third downs and then found Williams in the flat. He made a devastating cutback and went 28 yards for a score, which was upheld after it appeared that the freshman running back fumbled right at the goal line.

Another replay went the Jayhawks’ way at the other end of the field a few minutes later.

Oklahoma Rolls Past Kansas State

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Kyler Murray passed for 352 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score to help No. 8 Oklahoma beat Kansas State 51-14 on Saturday.

The Sooners (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) rolled up a season-high 702 total yards and only punted once, and that was in the fourth quarter after Murray was done for the day.

CeeDee Lamb caught four passes for a career-high 160 yards and two touchdowns, and Kennedy Brooks ran for 94 yards and two scores. The Sooners won their second straight since losing to Texas.

Oklahoma held Kansas State (3-4, 1-4) to 245 yards. Alex Barnes, who entered the game as the Big 12’s leading rusher, was limited to 28 yards on 13 carries.

“He’s been tremendous against everybody, so that’s, of all the stats in the game, that’s one of the ones that I know I’m most proud of,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said.

The Sooners gained 209 yards in the first quarter and took a 17-0 lead. Murray threw two touchdown passes in the period, including an 82-yard connection with Lamb.

Murray ran for a 9-yard touchdown in the second quarter to push the lead to 31-7, and the Sooners were ahead 34-7 at the break. Murray completed 17 of 22 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 37 yards and another score in the first half.

Season Ends for Blue Jays

The Junction City Blue Jays saw their football season come to an end with a 25-15 loss to the Dodge City Red Demons Friday night in the first round of the Class 6A postseason playoffs.

Dodge City jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead and never trailed in the contest, although the Blue Jays pulled to within four at 19-15 in the third quarter. But the Junction City rally stopped there as the Red Demons tacked on a fourth quarter touchdown on a 10-yard run by John Johnson to go up 25-15.

Two fumbles and stalled drives were costly for Junction City in the ballgame. Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman said the team had opportunities to win, but there were the two first half fumbles. ” Did not get started offensively at all. Defensively I thought we played very very hard. We were just out there too long.”

Junction City finished the season with a final record of 4-5, and on a three-game losing streak. Dodge City improved to 6-3, and will advance to the second round of the playoffs against Derby ( 9-0 ).

KU Awaiting Guidance from Prosecutors

KU Limestone

University of Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod says the school is awaiting guidance from prosecutors on what steps to take after three college basketball insiders were convicted of wire fraud in a case that ensnared the school.

In a statement issued by Girod and athletic director Jeff Long, the school said once it is cleared by the Justice Department to move forward, it would begin working with the NCAA to review information presented during trial. Kansas also intends to review the eligibility of all its athletes.

Ex-Adidas official James Gatto, consultant Merl Code and NBA agent runner Christian Dawkins were found guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The trio had been accused of funneling money to players to attend Kansas, Louisville and other schools sponsored by the apparel company.

Girod says no decision has been made about a long-term contract extension with Adidas. The sides had agreed to a $191 million extension in late 2017 but the contract was never signed.

Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tourney to remain in Kansas City though 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Latest from Big 12 media day in Kansas City, Missouri (all times local):

The Big 12 Conference has announced an extension of its contract to keep its men’s basketball tournament in Kansas City through 2024, along with a four-year scheduling pact with the Big East.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Wednesday that there was little debate whether to keep the tournament at Sprint Center. The previous contract was set to expire after the 2020 season.

As for the Big East alliance, Bowlsby said it was designed to address the scheduling concerns of many coaches. The Big 12 already plays a double round-robin schedule, and as other large leagues go to 20-game conference slates, it has become difficult to add competitive nonconference games.

The alliance will begin next year, with five games played at Big 12 venues and five played at Big East venues. Kansas-Villanova, Texas-Providence, Oklahoma-Creighton and Kansas State-Marquette are set, with the remaining games still to be scheduled.
