Holmes 3-pointer sends Texas over K-State 67-64

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Jonathan Holmes made a catch-and-shoot 3 pointer at the buzzer to send Texas to a 67-64 victory over No. 22 Kansas State on Tuesday night, the Longhorns’ fourth straight victory in the Big 12.

Texas had almost blown its chance for the game-winner when it nearly K-Statebotched an inbounds pass with 3 seconds left. But after a quick timeout, Isaiah Taylor zipped the ball to the Holmes in the left corner and he put up the shot over two defenders. The ball swished through the basket at the buzzer and Holmes was mobbed by his teammates.

Javan Felix scored 23 points to lead Texas (15-4, 4-2) and Cam Ridley scored 18. Holmes finished with 10 points.

Thomas Gipson scored 24 points for Kansas State (14-5, 4-2), which had tied the game at 64 on Shane Southwell’s twisting, off-balance layup with 5 seconds to play after Felix had missed two free throws.

Athlete of the Week

Wakefield High School junior Keenan Westerman scored 16 points, pulled down five basketball clip art tworebounds, and had five steals in a 50-46 Bombers victory over Peabody-Burns. Earlier in the week Wakefield lost to Solomon, but Keenan had 24 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in that basketball game.

In recognition of his performance Keenan Westerman is the McDonald’s Athlete of the Week. He will receive a framed certificate, recognition on display boards at the two McDonald’s Restaurants in Junction City, and on both the Talk of JC and online at JCPost.com.

Wildcats Improve to 4-1 in Big 12 Play

Kansas State ( 14-4, 4-1 ) used a lockdown defense to limit West Virginia ( 10-8, 2-3 ) to 32.7 percent shooting enroute to a 78-56 win over the Mountaineers Saturday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum.

K-State got double figure scoring from three players enroute to the win. Shane Southwell and Thomas Gipson each scored 20 points, while Marcus Foster had

15 points.

West Virginia coach Bob Huggins was asked comment on Gipson’s play. “He had his way…scored the ball, got it on the rim. We had a couple freshmen on him and he just big boyed them.”

For Huggins it was just his second trip back to Manhattan after spending one season guiding the Kansas State program during the 2006-2007 campaign.

K-State coach Bruce Weber called it a good all-around win at both ends of the floor. “It was the best we shot all year, I believe, and especially against a good opponent.” K-State shot 52.9 percent from the field for the game.

Weber noted  West Virginia has three guards that “keep coming at you.” He said Juwan Staten is hard to guard, and the Mountaineer’s Eron Harris hit a couple of early three-point shots.  “But after that we really locked in and did a good job of just being solid on defense.”

The Wildcats  play at Texas on Tuesday.
