Manning filled out his staff Wednesday by adding Steve Woodberry, Brett Ballard and Justin Bauman.

Woodberry and Ballard will be assistant coaches while Bauman will be his director of basketball operations. Those are the same roles they filled on the Tulsa staff.

Manning says they “have an outstanding feel for the type of program we want to run.”

Manning previously said he would retain assistant Randolph Childress from Jeff Bzdelik’s staff with the Demon Deacons.

Woodberry and Ballard both were assistants to Manning on his first Golden Hurricane team in 2012.

Wake Forest hired Manning two weeks ago after he led Tulsa to its first NCAA tournament berth since 2003.

Moment of silence marks Boston Marathon bombings

BOSTON (AP) – Survivors, first-responders and public officials have observed a moment of silence near the Boston Marathon finish line to mark the moment two pressure cooker bombs exploded a year ago.

Three people were killed and 260 others injured in the attacks. MIT police officer Sean Collier was killed several days later, allegedly by the bombing suspects.

This year’s running of the Boston Marathon, expected to be the second-largest in history, will take place on Monday.

About 2,500 people attended an invitation-only tribute at the Hynes Convention Center, then walked in the rain to the finish line for the moment of silence. Bells were rung and a flag was raised by Officer Richard Donohue, who was badly injured during a shootout with the bombing suspects.

Panel of administrators: NCAA system must change

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A panel of college administrators agree the NCAA business model has to change to survive.

Three administrators participated in a discussion Tuesday on integrity and the commercialization of college athletics – Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner Beth DeBauche, Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart and former Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe.

Many athletic departments are flush with cash thanks to multi-million dollar TV deals. Conferences have started their own networks and coaches’ contracts continue to soar.

Now athletes are demanding their fair share.

Barnhart says the issues didn’t develop overnight. Beebe says realignment only increased students’ desires for their share of the money generated.

While DeBauche sees the current crisis as an opportunity to make college athletics healthier than ever, the panel also agreed the question now is how to do that.

Bubba Watson Wins Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) – Bubba Watson has won the Masters for the second time in three years.jc post

Watson claimed another green jacket by shooting a 3-under 69 in the final round Sunday, fending off Jordan Spieth’s bid to become the youngest major champion since 1931.

The 20-year-old Texan led by two shots heading to the eighth hole, but the tournament changed suddenly.

Watson made two straight birdies, Spieth took back-to-back bogeys – and just like that, Watson was up by two strokes at the turn.

The left-hander led the rest of the way, adding to the 2012 title he won in more spectacular fashion with a playoff victory. The winning score was 8-under 280.

Spieth finished with a 72, his worst score of the week. He was 283 overall, tied with Sweden’s Jonas Blixt.

A day after getting his first RBI of the year, Mauer drove in three more runs against Kansas City starter James Shields. Brian Dozier had a leadoff homer for Minnesota, which has scored the second-most runs in the American League.

Nolasco (1-1) showed why the Twins signed him to a $49 million, four-year contract to steady their rotation. The right-hander gave up five runs in each of his first two outings for his new team, but was on top of his game Saturday in his first home start for Minnesota. Nolasco went eight innings and allowed five hits with four strikeouts.

Shields (0-2) yielded seven runs – one earned – in 5 2-3 innings. He gave up six hits and walked three while striking out five.
