Lady Jay 4×800 Relay Finishes Third

The Junction City Lady Jay 4 x 800 relay team finished third in their Class 6A race at the StateTrack Meet on Saturday in Wichita.

The team of Myrissa Humphreys, Deisjambra Bisio, Bri Pace, and Rosie Hollis turned in a time of 9:44.60.

The Lady Jay 4 x 400 relay team of Humphreys, Bisio, Hollis, and Nashaia Nixon finished sixth in that event in 4:08.13.

The Lady Jays finished the state meet in 24th place with nine points.

Lawrence Free State won the 6A Girls state title with 97 points.

Olathe East scored 85 points to win the 6A Boys title while Manhattan finished second with 75.

Lady Jays 4×400 Relay Qualifies for Finals

The Junction City Lady Jay 4×400 relay team will run in the finals of that event at the State Track Meet on Saturday in Wichita.

In the prelims on Friday  the team of Myrissa Humphreys, Deisjambra STATE TRACK 2014 ONEBisio, Rosie Hollis,and  Nashaia Nixon turned in the fourth fastest time at 4:07.16, The top eight times qualify for the finals. That race is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.

“You know our girls have been improving in that race throughout the year and they are where they need to be,” Head Coach Randall Zimmerman said. “They were second in their heat and fourth overall, just right in the mix. We hope to get up on the medal stand tomorrow with a nice medal.”

Also for Junction City in the preliminary round of competition Deisjambra Bisio finished 15th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.67, but did not qualify for the finals. The Lady Jay 4×100 relay team of Samonte Jones, Raynell Wilson, Le’Minnie Garrison, and Nashaia Nixon finished ninth in 50.64, but will not advance to the finals.

There are no members of the Blue Jay boys track team competing at the State Meet this year.

Junction City Resident to be Inducted into KSHSAA Hall of Fame

Jennifer ( Gruver) Kirkpatrick will be inducted into the Kansas State High School Activities Hall of Fame on Saturday after a stellar career at Scott Community High School ( 1988-92). During her four year career she earned 16 medals at the state track meet, 12 golds and 4 silver.

She was nominated for the Hall of Fame by both her husband and mother, who kept it a secret from her until the letter came announcing that she would be inducted.

“I found out in November, my husband handed me the letter that said you will be inducted into the 2014 Hall of Fame,” Kirkpatrick said.

She explained that she was shocked at first.

“I still am. My first reaction honestly was that I’m not deserving of that honor, I mean I know so many athletes, fabulous athletes. I struggled with that for awhile, but I was happy. I mean it was an honor, it’s just something I couldn’t even imagine being given.”

Jennifer Kirkpatrick earned 4 gold medals in the 100 meter hurdles, and 4 in the Long Jump. In addition she earned 3 gold medals in the Triple Jump, 1 in the 300 Low Hurdles, along  with 3 silver medals in the 300 low hurdles and one silver medal in the 400 Meter Dash.

Kirkpatrick was a 3 sport letterwinner at Scott Community HS in volleyball and basketball. She received all-league status all four years, and was named an All-State player her senior year in basketball.  Her honors also included being named a Kansas Governors Scholar.

Kirkpatrick will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during the State Track Meet on Saturday in Wichita.

Lady Jays to Compete at State Track

Eight members of the Junction City Lady Jay track team will compete in the Class 6A competition at the state track meet in Wichita Friday and Saturday. blue jay logo

KJCK AM, The Talk of JC, will report from Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University both days beginning at 8:50 a.m. on Friday.

The Lady Jays headed to state include Deisjambra Bisio in the 400 meter dash, the Lady Jay 4 x 100 relay team of Samonte Jones, Raynell Wilson, Li’Minnie Garrison, and Nashaia Nixon.  Junction City will also send the girls 4 x 400 relay team of Myrissa Humphreys, Deisjambra Bisio, Rosie Hollis, and Nashaia Nixon, plus the 4 x 800 relay team of Myrissa Humphreys, Deisjambra Bisio, Bri Pace, and Rosie Hollis.

No members of the Blue Jay boys track team qualified for state.

Blue Jays Drop Close Game to Manhattan at State

It was close, but Junction City ( 9-14 )  fell to Manhattan ( 21-2 ) 1-0 in the first round of the Class 6A State Baseball Tournament in Lawrence.state six

The Indians scored the only run of the ballgame in the fifth inning when Mike Leeper scored for Manhattan. Jesse Steinberg pitched five scoreless innings for the Indians before being relieved by Henry DeNoble in the sixth inning.

Denoble shut the Blue Jays out for the remaining two innings, but it was very close in the seventh. Aided by two Manhattan errors and a single by Ian Winchester Junction City loaded the bases with one out. But DeNoble then struck out Nate Funk and Charlie Peyla to preserve the victory for the Indians.

Will Ervin pitched well for Junction City. He went the distance on the mound for the Blue Jays, and gave up only four hits. The Blue Jays had eight base runners in the contest, and two hits.

Manhattan will play Maize ( 17-6 ) in the tournament semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hoglund Ballpark at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, site of the state tournament. The other semifinal contest at 11 a.m. will pit Wichita Northwest ( 13-10 ) against Blue Valley High School ( 16-7 ).   The winners will play for the state championship at 6:30 p.m. Friday, while the losers of the semifinal games will meet at 4 p.m. in the third place consolation game.

Coaching Staff Changes for Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — They Royals shook up their coaching staff Thursday in an attempt to jumpstart their failing offense, appointing Dale Sveum (swaym) as the hitting coach and making Mike Jirschele their third base coach.royals

Pedro Grifol, who took over as hitting coach last season, will now instruct catchers.

The moves were announced after the Royals finished off a disastrous homestand that included a sweep at the hands of Houston, and before they opened a four-game series in Toronto.

The Royals began the day last in the majors by a wide margin with 21 homers, and in the bottom third of the league in runs, on-base percentage and several other statistical categories.

Royals Rally to Top Toronto

TORONTO (AP) – Omar Infante hit a two-run single in the 10th inning and the Kansas City kcrRoyals overcame two home runs by Edwin Encarnacion to beat the Blue Jays 8-6 on Thursday night, snapping Toronto’s winning streak at nine games.

Facing Todd Redmond (0-4), Alcides Escobar singled to begin the 10th. Pedro Ciriaco was hit on the front of the helmet while squaring to bunt and Nori Aoki advanced the runners with a sacrifice before Infante lined a single just over the reach of leaping third baseman Brett Lawrie.

Wade Davis (4-1) worked two innings for the win and Greg Holland closed it out for his 15th save in 16 chances.

The Blue Jays were on the verge of victory in the ninth before the Royals tied it with an unearned run off Casey Janssen, who blew a save for the first time in nine chances.

 

Blue Jays Fall in Opening Round of State Tournament

The Junction City High School baseball team fell in the first round of the state tournament Thursday to the Manhattan High Indians 1-0.

Will Ervin pitched the entire game for the Blue Jays giving up just four hitsblue jay logo and one run in the 5th inning.

For the Indians Jesse Steinbring pitched into the sixth inning before hitting a Blue Jay batter and being replaced by Henry DeNoble who finished out the game for the Indians.

The Blue Jays did have an opportunity to tie it up and take the lead in the top of the seventh with bases loaded and one out but failed to get a run.

“I can’t stop talking about our kids. Unbelievable job to compete and just really battle and battle. The amount of belief, some of these kids had never beat Manhattan in their careers and they believed in all of their hearts they were going to do it today,” said Heath Gerstner, Blue Jay Head Coach.

Manhattan will now play Friday at 1 p.m. against the winner of the Shawnee Mission East and Maize game.

 

Astros Complete Sweep of Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chris Carter hit two home runs, George Springer set a rookie club kcrrecord for homers in a month and the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 9-3 Wednesday for their fifth straight win.

The Astros, with the worst record in the AL, won three times in Kansas City for their first sweep of the season. Houston’s winning streak is its longest since a six-game string that ended last June 3.

The Royals have lost four in a row.
