K-State’s Barnes, Risner set for NFL Combine

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State running back Alex Barnes and offensive lineman Dalton Risner will put their skills on display this week in the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Barnes and Risner will each hit the field on Friday with a battery of skills tests that will be shown live on NFL Network.

The appearance by Barnes and Risner marks the sixth time in the last seven years K-State has sent multiple players to the most vital event on the path to the NFL Draft. The Wildcats are currently riding the longest NFL Draft streak in the Big 12 at 25 years, a mark that is tied for the 12th-longest streak in the nation.

Barnes, who declared for the NFL Draft following his junior season, finished his career ranking second in school history in career yards per carry (5.71) and 100-yard rushing games (12). He also left K-State ranked fourth in total rushing yards (2,616) and yards per game (112.9), while he is ninth in rushing touchdowns (25).

A product of Pittsburg, Kansas, Barnes concluded the 2018 season as the Big 12 rushing champion and a First Team All-Big 12 performer. He finished 10th nationally in rushing yards per game and tied for third in the Big 12 with 12 rushing touchdowns.

Risner was a two-time First Team All-American and three-time First Team All-Big 12 performer, just the fourth offensive lineman in Big 12 history to pick up three-straight first team all-conference accolades. A native of Wiggins, Colorado, Risner allowed a Big 12-low four quarterback pressures in 2018 according to Pro Football Focus.

Coverage of the NFL Scouting Combine begins Friday at 8 a.m. (CT) live on NFL Network and continues throughout the weekend. Testing results can also be followed at www.nfl.com/combine, while updates on Risner and Barnes can been seen on K-State Football’s official Twitter account, @KStateFB.

Chapman girls basketball gets substate play-in game win

Three Chapman players scored in double figures Tuesday night to lead the Irish girls basketball team to a 58-33 victory over El Dorado in a play-in game for a Class 4A Substate Tournament.

McKenna Kirkpatrick scored 21 points, Ashlynn Bledsoe 15 and Kylie Adams 11 points for Chapman in the win.  They will go to Nickerson for a substate semifinal game Thursday night at 6 p.m. The other half of the tournament bracket has Rose Hill hosting Augusta.

Blue Jays to open substate tournament play Wednesday

The Junction City Blue Jays ( 10-10 ) play at Lawrence Free State ( 13-6 ) in the first round of a Class 6A Substate Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Blue Jay coach Nick Perez noted the Firebirds have some good shooters. “Most part of their offense they’re all about four-out-one and try to drive it, and then if you help they give it to the big guy. Size is going to matter. They’ve got about three – four guys who start that are taller than our biggest kid, so we’re going to have to box out and rebound and do those little things.”

You can hear the game on 107.9 FM and 1420 KJCK AM. The broadcast begins at 5:50 p.m. with tipoff set for 6 p.m.

The other half of the substate bracket finds Topeka High ( 18-2 ) hosting Derby ( 5-14 ). The winners of the two games will play Friday night on the court of the higher seeded team for the substate championship.

KU Defeats K-State at Allen Fieldhouse

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Dedric Lawson had 18 points and 14 rebounds to cement his front-runner status for Big 12 player of the year, and No. 15 Kansas pounded No. 16 Kansas State 64-49 on Monday night to keep alive its hopes of a 15th consecutive conference championship.

Devon Dotson added 16 points and fellow freshman Quentin Grimes had 12 for the Jayhawks (21-7, 10-5), who moved within a game of the league-leading Wildcats (21-7, 11-4) with three to play.

Texas Tech, which roughed up the Jayhawks on Saturday, is a half-game back in second place.

There was a sense of desperation in the air inside Allen Fieldhouse, where Kansas — despite all the injuries and unrest this season — had not lost in 19 games. And it manifested itself in the kind of cutthroat defense that coach Bill Self’s teams have become accustomed to playing over the years.

The Wildcats shot just 32 percent from the field, struggled with turnovers at key junctures and never seemed as comfortable as they were at Bramlage Coliseum, where they roared past the Jayhawks nearly three weeks ago to seize control of the conference race.

K-State rolls by Oklahoma State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Balanced offense, stellar defense and good shooting propelled No. 23 Kansas State in a blowout win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys 85-46 Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats had no problems as Xavier Sneed and Austin Trice led the team with 12 points each and Kamau Stokes had 11. K-State had 10 players score.

The Wildcats (21-6, 11-3 in Big 12 play) shot 62 percent and held the Cowboys to 31 percent. Oklahoma State (10-17, 3-11) was led by Yor Anei, who had 12 points as the Cowboys struggled the entire game to find the basket.

Barry Brown led the Wildcats in rebounding with seven as the team outrebounded the Cowboys 36-23.

The Cowboys were overmatched the entire way. The Wildcats scored the first 15 points and forced five turnovers in the first five minutes.
