Blue Jays to open substate tournament play Wednesday

The Junction City Blue Jays ( 10-10 ) play at Lawrence Free State ( 13-6 ) in the first round of a Class 6A Substate Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Blue Jay coach Nick Perez noted the Firebirds have some good shooters. “Most part of their offense they’re all about four-out-one and try to drive it, and then if you help they give it to the big guy. Size is going to matter. They’ve got about three – four guys who start that are taller than our biggest kid, so we’re going to have to box out and rebound and do those little things.”

You can hear the game on 107.9 FM and 1420 KJCK AM. The broadcast begins at 5:50 p.m. with tipoff set for 6 p.m.

The other half of the substate bracket finds Topeka High ( 18-2 ) hosting Derby ( 5-14 ). The winners of the two games will play Friday night on the court of the higher seeded team for the substate championship.
