A’s Lester, Royals’ Shields in AL Wild-card Focus

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals made one of the boldest trades in franchise kcrhistory two years ago. The Oakland Athletics made a similarly aggressive move just a couple of months ago.

The results of both will be in the starting spotlight Tuesday night.

For the Royals, it’s “Big Game James” – James Shields, the centerpiece of a deal with the Tampa Bay Rays that finally pushed the long-downtrodden franchise into the postseason for the first time in 29 years. For the A’s, it’s Jon Lester – the postseason star of the Red Sox last season who was acquired by Oakland at the trading deadline just for this moment.

The one-game AL wild-card playoff. The winner advances to face the Los Angeles Angels in the best-of-five division series Thursday. The loser trudges off into the offseason.

Bowen noted he joined the KU family as a player 24 years ago.

Bowen has coached at Kansas through two stints totaling a combined 16 years. In his second stint he served as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach in 2012, before moving over to coaching the linebackers in 2013. Bowen served as the co-defensive coordinator in 2007 during the squad’s Orange Bowl run and held that title until 2009.

Weis Out as Kansas Football Coach; Bowen Named Interim Head Coach

Lawrence, Kan. – Charlie Weis has been relieved of his duties as Head Football Coach at the jayhawkUniversity of Kansas, KU Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger announced Sunday. Weis was in the third year of a five-year contract.

Zenger named KU defensive coordinator Clint Bowen interim head coach.

“I normally do not favor changing coaches mid-season,” Zenger said. “But I believe we have talented coaches and players in this program, and I think this decision gives our players the best chance to begin making progress right away.

“I appreciate what Coach Weis did with several facets of our football program,” Zenger continued. “But we have not made the on-the-field progress we believe we should. I believe new leadership gives our coaches and players the best chance to make a fresh start.”

Zenger informed Weis of his decision Sunday morning, and then spoke to the rest of the coaching staff. “I am grateful for the KU fans, alumni and donors who continue to support our coaches and players.”

“As we continue to elevate the national stature of the University of Kansas, our pursuit of excellence extends beyond our research and instructional missions,” said KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little. “KU alumni, students, fans and supporters expect that Kansas Football will match the other areas in which we excel as a university. After consulting with Dr. Zenger, I am in agreement that it is time for new leadership of our football program.”

Playoff-Lookahead

Sonny Gray pitched Oakland into baseball’s last playoff spot, Detroit and St. Louis clinchedkcr two division crowns and Jordan Zimmermann threw a no-hitter in a final-day drama made even more memorable by Derek Jeter’s farewell.
