Chiefs Put McKnight on Injured Reserve

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have created space on their roster for the return chiefs logoof right tackle Donald Stephenson by placing running back Joe McKnight on injured reserve.

McKnight became the third Chiefs player to tear his Achilles tendon when he was hurt in practice last week. He was coming off a two-touchdown game in a win in Miami.

Stephenson was suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. That suspension ended with Monday night’s 41-14 victory over the New England Patriots.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said earlier Tuesday that he would wait to see Stephenson practice on Wednesday before he begins to decide whether he’ll go back in the starting lineup.

Kansas State to Face Passing Attack from Texas Tech

Kansas State has faced two teams in a row that run the ball for over 300 yards a game, this week they will see the opposite end of the spectrum as Texas Tech comes to Manhattan averaging over 300 yards passing per game.

The Red Raiders are averaging 344 yards passing per game, compared toBILL SNYDER 9-30 just 157 yards rushing per game, and have been led by sophomore quarterback Davis Webb, who may not play Saturday.

Webb suffered an injury to his non-passing shoulder in last weeks 45-35 loss to Oklahoma State and head coach Cliff Kingsbury said whether he plays or not will be a game day decision. If Webb can’t go Texas Tech would likely go with true freshman Patrick Mahomes.

Kansas State’s Jonathan Truman explained that from what he has seen so far in watching film there isn’t any major differences between the two quarterbacks.

“Both of the guys have great capabilities, and they are very skilled at what they do,” says Truman. “They manage the game very well, they play their offense very well. We just have to be prepared like we do every week, be prepared for anything they throw at us, and whether he plays or not, we are going to be prepared for it.”

Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder explained that there shouldn’t be much change to how K-State’s defensive backs adjust to a passing offense opposed to a run dominant offense.

“You know if you do it the right way, it isn’t that. Your eyes are supposed to tell them if it’s either run or pass. It’s a matter of discipline, staying focused, putting your eyes in the right place, and responding rapidly to what you see,” says Snyder.

Kansas State and Texas Tech will face off in a 6 p.m. match up Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU.

Texas Tech Could Need to Start Freshman QB at KSU

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) – Texas Tech could again have a freshman starting at quarterback when the wildcatRed Raiders play No. 23 Kansas State this week.

Patrick Mahomes could start in place of sophomore Davis Webb after a shoulder injury to his non-throwing arm in the fourth quarter of Texas Tech’s 45-35 loss at Oklahoma State last week.

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said Webb starting will be a game-day decision and he’d need to be able to protect himself. Webb threw for 374 yards, four touchdowns and had two interceptions before getting injured.

After that, Mahomes threw for one TD and had an interception.

Athletics, Royals Set Rosters for AL Wild-Card

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Royals manager Ned Yost went with a nine-man pitching staff and kcr twoOakland counterpart Bob Melvin opted to keep eight pitchers for their AL wild-card game Tuesday night.

The winner advances to face the Los Angeles Angels in the division series Thursday.

The Royals are sending James Shields to the mound to start their first postseason game in 29 years. He’ll be backed by one of the strongest bullpens in baseball, which includes left-hander Brandon Finnegan, the club’s first-round pick out of TCU just this year.

The Athletics will start Jon Lester. He’ll be backed by an equally stout bullpen and an offense that includes slugger Adam Dunn, making his first postseason appearance after playing 2,001 regular-season games for five clubs over 14 seasons.

NFL Says Abdullah Should not Have Been Penalized

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The NFL says Kansas City Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah should not havefootball clip art been penalized for dropping to his knees in prayer in the end zone after an interception.

NFL spokesman Michael Signora writes in an email to The Associated Press on Tuesday that “the officiating mechanic in this situation is not to flag a player who goes to the ground as part of religious expression.

Signora says “there should have been no penalty on the play.”

The flag thrown in the fourth quarter of Kansas City’s 41-14 victory over New England on Monday night touched off a firestorm on social media, with many wondering how it was different from players dropping to one knee in Christian prayer.

Chiefs Blast New England

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Jamaal Charles returned from an ankle injury to score three football clip arttouchdowns, Alex Smith threw for 248 yards and three scores, and the Chiefs routed the Patriots 41-14 on Monday night, getting the sports week off to a smashing start in Kansas City with the Royals preparing to open the baseball playoffs on Tuesday.

They held the Patriots’ Tom Brady to 159 yards passing and a touchdown, picking him off twice and returning one for a touchdown. Brady was also strip-sacked by Tamba Hali to set up a Chiefs field goal, capping off a miserable night for the two-time NFL MVP.

The Chiefs forced the Patriots to air it out by stuffing Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley. And when Brady dropped back, their front seven ran roughshod over New England’s suspect offensive line.

It hardly helped the Patriots offense that it was trying to operate on the same night Chiefs fans were trying to reclaim the record for loudest outdoor sports venue. The record was set in the first half, when Guinness World Records noted a noise level of 142.2 decibels – breaking the mark of 137.6 that Seattle Seahawks fans set last season.
