Kansas State Rolls Past Newman

The Kansas State women’s basketball team concluded its exhibition schedule Monday night in wildcatBramlage Coliseum with an 80-30 win over Newman.

A 20-0 run in the first half propelled the Wildcats to the win. Haley Texada notched a game-high 17 points for Kansas State. Sophomore forward Breanna Lewis tallied 12 points, four blocks, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Sophomore guard Kindred Weseman collected 10 points, five assists, and three steals.

Kansas State will open its 47th season of action on Friday evening as the wildcats host SIUE at 5:30 p.m.

Shields Turns Down Qualifying Offer

NEW YORK (AP) — For the third straight year, baseball’s free agents shunned qualifying offers kcr twofrom their former teams and chose to test the market.

All 12 free agents who were given the $15.3 million offers last week chose not to accept by Monday’s 5 p.m. EST deadline.

One of the dozen, Colorado outfielder Michael Cuddyer, became the first major free agent to switch teams when he agreed to a $21 million, two-year contract with the New York Mets.

World Series star Pablo Sandoval (San Francisco) also let the deadline pass, as did pitcher Max Scherzer and first baseman-designated hitter Victor Martinez (Detroit), and left-hander Francisco Liriano and catcher Russell Martin (Pittsburgh).

The others were shortstop Hanley Ramirez (Los Angeles Dodgers), outfielder Nelson Cruz (Baltimore), right-hander James Shields (Kansas City), closer David Robertson (New York Yankees), outfielder Melky Cabrera (Toronto) and pitcher Ervin Santana (Atlanta).

 

Chiefs Lose Gray, Harris to Injuries

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have lost backup running back Cyrus Gray for the season chiefs logowith a torn knee ligament. Tight end Demetrius Harris is also sidelined with a broken foot.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed that Gray, a special teams standout, will miss the rest of the season after tearing an ALC in the third quarter of Sunday’s 17-13 victory over Buffalo. Harris, a former basketball player in college, broke his foot during warmups prior to the game.

Reid said the rest of the team came out relatively healthy heading into Sunday’s showdown against the Super Bowl champion Seahawks. Running back Jamaal Charles had a neck stinger and tight end Anthony Fasano a bruised knee, but both would have been able to practice Monday.

Blue Jays to Host Second Round Playoff Game

The Junction City Blue Jays ( 8-2 ) will host Lawrence Free State ( 7-3 ), in the second ( Sectional ) blue jay logoround of the Class 6a postseason playoffs Friday night at Al Simpler Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.  Gates open at 5 p.m.

Admission prices are $6 for adults and $5 for students K-12.

This is a Kansas State High School Activities Association sponsored event. League passes, USD 475 ID cards, golden age passes, student passes, etc. will not be honored by ticket takers and ticket sellers.

The Short Story:

  • Sophomore guard Marcus Foster led three Wildcats in double figures with 17 points, as Kansas State outlasted Washburn, 68-56, in its lone exhibition game before 12,391 fans at Bramlage Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
  • Juniors Justin Edwards (14) and Stephen Hurt (12) also scored in double figures for K-State.
  • K-State played Sunday’s exhibition without four players due to injury, including seniorNino Williams, junior D.J. Johnson, sophomore Wesley Iwundu and freshman Malek Harris.


How It Happened:

  • The Wildcats came out the gate firing, opening the game on a 12-1 run. Foster and Nigel Johnson combined for three 3-pointers, while senior Thomas Gipsonand Edwards pitched in a free throw and layup, respectively. Also starting for the ‘Cats was Jevon Thomas, who racked up the Wildcats’ first five assists of the game – he would go onto finish with a game-high eight dimes on the afternoon.
  • Back-and-forth action soon followed with the Ichabods pulling to within three, 14-11, at the 10:45 mark. The ‘Cats would respond though, sparking a 10-0 run thanks to contributions from Foster, Edwards, Johnson and Gipson. The run helped K-State to a 32-22 lead at halftime.
  • Scoring only five points in the first six minutes of the second half, newcomersTre Harris and Hurt along with Johnson extended K-State’s lead to 45-32 with just under 12 minutes left in the game. Hurt, who transferred from Northwest Florida Junior College last year, dazzled in his debut, finishing the afternoon with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting to go along with three rebounds and two blocks.
  • From there, the Ichabods would never get closer than eight points with K-State matching Washburn basket-for-basket. In fact, after extending their lead to 54-44 with 6:09 remaining thanks to an Edwards’ layup, the Wildcats closed out the game scoring 14 points to Washburn’s 12.

 

Beyond the Boxscore:

  • K-State is now 56-18 (.756) all-time in exhibition play, including 38-9 at Bramlage Coliseum.
  • The Wildcats have now won 16 consecutive exhibition games dating back to 2004.
  • K-State is 4-0 in exhibition play under head coach Bruce Weber.
  • K-State is now 5-0 vs. Washburn in exhibition play.
  • In addition to Edwards and Hurt, three other players made their first appearances in a Wildcat uniform, including sophomore Brandon Bolden and freshmen Tre Harris andMason Schoen.

  • “We cannot have as many turnovers,” said head coach Bruce Weber on where the team needs to get better heading into Friday’s opener. “We have to rebound better, and just to make an improvement. We had some good possessions. I have talked with the guys about maturity all along. Part of maturity is when you get up 10, or 12, now you get a couple of stops and you come down and work them, break the game open. Every time we got up 10 or 12, I thought we tried to make plays on our own. Then we did not get back to the intensity on defense that kept allowing them back in the game. I hope we get better at that.”

TCU Cruises Past Kansas State

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Trevone Boykin ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns and threw for another score, leading No. 6 TCU to a 41-20 victory over No. 9 Kansas State on Saturday night that had huge Bigk-state football 12 title and playoff implications.

Aaron Green, filling in for injured B.J. Catalon, ran for 171 yards for the Horned Frogs (8-1, 5-1), including a 65-yard TD.

A week after Boykin apologized in the locker room after a one-point win at West Virginia for what he considered a subpar performance, the dual-threat quarterback set a career high for rushing yards and completed 23 of 34 passes for 219 yards.

The end of Kansas State’s five-game winning streak created a three-way tie atop the Big 12 standings with theWildcats (7-2, 5-1), TCU and No. 10 Baylor (8-1, 5-1).

In the College Football Playoff rankings, TCU is sixth, a spot ahead of Kansas State.

 

Chiefs Rally to Win Over Bills

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) – Anthony Sherman recovered a fumble to set up Alex Smith’s 8-yard chiefs logotouchdown run with nearly 9 minutes left in allowing the Kansas City Chiefs rally to a 17-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Jamaal Charles also scored on a 39-yard touchdown run as the Chiefs (6-3) scored twice in span of 4:31 to overcome a 13-3 deficit. The Chiefs defense then made a stand at its own 15 by forcing Bills quarterback Kyle Orton to throw four consecutive incompletions and turn the ball over on downs with 2:32 left.

Smith scored two plays after Sherman punched the ball out of the hands of Bills punt-returner Leodis McKelvin and then pounced on the loose ball at Buffalo’s 26.

Orton hit Chris Hogan for a 25-yard touchdown pass for Buffalo (5-4). The Bills settled for two field goals, and Bryce Brown lost a fumble, in three trips inside the Chiefs 20.

K-State Basketball Hosts Washburn Sunday

The Kansas State men’s basketball team hosts Washburn in an exhibition game at 2 p.m. Sunday atbasketball Bramlage Coliseum.

The Wildcats return nine lettermen including four players with starting experience from a team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for a school-record fifth consecutive season with its eighth straight 20-win season. Preseason All-Big 12 selection Marcus Foster and senior Thomas Gipson headline the group.
