Royals Defeat the Tigers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chris Young pitched five no-hit innings and the Detroit Tigers didn’t break through until the eighth in a 4-1 loss Friday night to the Kansas City Royals

Young, making his first start of the year after five relief appearances, struck out nine and walked three before exiting with his pitch count reaching 81.kcr two

Young (2-0) walked the bases full with one out in the fourth, but recovered to strike out J.D. Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes on seven pitches to end the inning.

Ryan Madson pitched two perfect innings after Young was pulled.

Kendrys Morales drove in three of the Royals’ runs

Left-hander Kyle Lobstein (2-2) took the loss, yielding four runs on 10 hits in 7 1-3 innings.

Track and Field – Junction City Results

Myrissa Humphreys finished second in the girls 800 meter run in 2:23.39 and Jalene Brime second in the boys triple jump with a jump of 43’7 at the Bob Camien / Claudia Welch Invitational track meet hosted by Seaman High School in Topeka.blue jay logo

Those were highlights for Junction City in the huge 20 team meet, which saw the Lady Jays finish 13th with 26 2/3 points. Manhattan won the girls team title with 80 2/3 points. On the boys side the Blue Jays finished 16th with 12 points, while Manhattan won the team title with 91 1/2 points.

Also, for Junction City, Alana Kramer finished 7th in the girls 300 meter hurdles in 49.59, Brianna Pace 16th in the 1600 meter run in 5:34.60,  Ayi-lissa Dotson 7th in the high jump with a jump of 5’2, and in boys competition Mason Tamarch 9th in the high jump at 6’0, and Bronson Hill 9th in the long jump at 20’6.”

 

Blue Jays Take Two from Manhattan in Baseball

The Junction City Blue Jays ( 9-7 ) went to Manhattan Friday and swept two baseball games from the Manhattan Indians 3-1 and 11-10 in nine innings.

Blue Jay coach Drew Biery was proud of his players. ” I have high expectations for them and they came out and they performed tonight. I’ll tell you what there was a sound I’ve never heard before. Our guys were into the game and the fans were into it. It was intense and it was a lot of fun to watch.”

Biery noted his team competed at the plate in game one, grinding out bat after bat. Amir McFarthing pitched for Junction City in that contest.

In game two the Blue Jays drew a couple of walks with Biery saying they then decided to get aggressive with hit and run instead of bunting.  “It was perfectly executed by Amir. We got guys on second and third.” Biery added then they threw a ball  into the dirt,  the Blue Jays were aggressive, and took home.

Junction City will host Topeka West May 7 at Rathert Field.

Tyler Lockett Drafted in Third Round by Seattle Seahawks

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Moving up in the third round, the Seattle Seahawks selected wide receiver/kick returner Tyler Lockett with the No. 69 pick in the NFL draft.

Seattle traded with Washington to move up from the No. 95 overall pick. Seattle swapped tyler lockettthird round spots with Washington and sent picks in the fourth (No. 114), fifth (167) and sixth (181) rounds back to the Redskins.
Lockett is the all-time leading receiver in Kansas State history and was a two-time Big 12 special teams player of the year. Seattle was looking to improve its return game after the trade of Percy Harvin in the middle of last season.

Lockett also provides depth at wide receiver, especially with the questions about when Paul Richardson will be healthy after tearing his ACL in the NFC playoffs last January.

Chiefs Pick Offensive Lineman in Second Round of NFL Draft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs attempted to shore up their porous offensive line by selecting Mitch Morse from nearby Missouri with their second-round pick in Friday night’s NFL draft.chiefs logo

The 6-foot-6, 305-pound Morse played center and guard for the Tigers before shifting to right tackle in 2013 and left tackle last year. He could play any of those positions for the Chiefs, who lost center Rodney Hudson to free agency and need help elsewhere on the line.

Kansas City also had needs at wide receiver and inside linebacker, but runs at both spots early in the second round left the Chiefs taking a local player.

The Chiefs picked cornerback Marcus Peters in the first round Thursday night. They also had two third-round picks later Friday night.

Lady Jays Swept by Manhattan in Softball

Manhattan ( 8-6 )  scored four runs in both the top of the sixth and top of the seventh inning enroute to a 10-5 victory over Junction City ( 6-10 ) in game one of a softball doubleheader at Cleary Field.blue jay logo

The Indians trailed 4-2 going into the sixth, but then collected some big hits to rally and go on to the win.

In game two Manhattan defeated Junction City 14-4 in a contest called after five innings due to a 10-run rule.

Lady Jay coach Jeff Child said in game one Manhattan just started hitting the ball. “They were making solid contact at the right time.” In game two Childs pointed to errors as a problem for Junction City. “Yeah, we had a lot of throwing errors.”

The Lady Jays play Topeka West at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka next Thursday – May 7.

 

K-State Signs AD John Currie to Contract Extension

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas State athletic director John Currie has signed a restructured contract that includes an extension through the 2020 academic year and increases his base salary to $775,000 annually.john currie ten

The extension announced Friday removes athletically related bonuses from Currie’s contract and turns the compensation into guaranteed salary. His previous agreement allowed him to earn up to 55 percent of his $575,000 salary in incentives up to a maximum of $316,250.

Currie took over Kansas State’s athletic department in May 2009, when it was struggling to break even financially. Since then, he has helped to wipe out the department’s debt and initiated $190 million in facility improvements, primarily to Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

The school has also built a basketball training facility, rowing center and tennis stadium.

Royals Shortstop Escobar Placed on 7-Day Concussion List

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list Friday, retroactive to Thursday.

Escobar, who did not miss a game last season, was struck in the face by Danny Salazar’s pitch in the fifth inning Wednesday night in Cleveland.kcr

“He took his impact tests and there were some issues with it in terms of reaction speed and stuff like that,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “This is something you don’t fool with. I’ve seen end guys end their careers with concussions.”

The Royals recalled infielder Orlando Calixte from Triple-A Omaha. He was hitting .167 with one home run in 12 games.

Blue Jay Tennis Captures First in a Salina Quadrangular

The Junction City Blue Jay tennis team has captured first place in a quadrangular in Salina that also featured teams from Salina Central, Maize South and Ellsworth.

The Blue Jays went undefeated in singles with Kyle Hand and Angeleau Scott both going 3-0 in blue jay logonumber one and two singles, respectively.

In the number one doubles bracket Neil Glaser and Dave Graham went 2-1 on the day, finishing second, while Grant Whaley and Korbin King rounded out play for the tennis team by going 1-2.

The Blue Jays will compete in the Centennial League Tournament in Topeka Monday, May 4.

Royals Win Series Opener Against Tigers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Danny Duffy pitched shutout ball into the eighth and Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 on Thursday night.

The Royals lost 13 of 19 to Detroit last year to finish a game behind the Tigers, who have won the kcr fivepast four AL Central titles.

Duffy gave up his first run when Rajai Davis’ single scored Jose Iglesias, who led off the inning with a triple. Duffy (2-0) struck out seven and walked two, while allowing seven hits before being replaced by Jason Frasor with no outs in the eighth.

Hosmer, who also homered Wednesday at Cleveland, drove an Alfredo Simon pitch to center with Mike Moustakas aboard in the Royals’ three-run third. Moustakas doubled home Alex Gordon with the first run.
