athletics year on Wednesday night as student-athletes from each of the school’s 16 varsity sports converged for the sixth annual Mark A. Chapman Powercat Choice Awards.

The ceremony resembles the ESPY Awards and includes all team and individual highlights from the past year both on the field and in the classroom.  All the performance-related awards were voted on by members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).  The voting was based on the accomplishments of sporting teams from Spring 2014 to Winter 2015.

Top team honors on the night went to the 2014 football team and women’s track and field squad. The football team won nine games and played in the Valero Alamo Bowl, while the women’s track and field squad finished second at this year’s Big 12 Indoor Championships and was ranked among the nation’s Top 10 for a majority of the season.

Curry Sexton’s one-handed touchdown grab against Texas Tech won Showstopping Moment of the Year honors, while head coach Cliff Rovelto of track and field won Coach of the Year honors from the student-athletes.

Women’s golf captured the Wildcat Cup on the night for its excellence in the five core areas of student-athlete well-being: academics, athletics, career, personal and service.
Tyler Lockett (football) took Male Athlete of the Year honors for the second straight year following a season that saw him earn Consensus All-America honors and become K-State’s all-time leading wide receiver. Lockett was selected by Seattle in the third round of last week’s NFL Draft, extending the Wildcats’ current draft streak to a Big 12-leading 22 straight years. Akela Jones of track and field won Female Athlete of the Year after winning the Big 12 Indoor long jump title and also nabbing multiple All-America honors.

Sexton, a second team Academic All-America selection, was crowned Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, while Meggie Murray of women’s rowing, a CRCA Scholar-Athlete Award recipient, took home top female scholar honors. Tia’ Gamble (track and field) was named Best Female Athlete in a Supporting Role, while Sexton (football) took honors as the Top Male Athlete in a Supporting Role.

In addition, Matthew McCrane (football) and A’Keyla Mitchell (women’s track and field) were named the male and female Newcomers of the Year.

The recipient of the Most Inspirational Award was Will Geary of the football team, while B.J. Finney of the football team earned the Purple Pride Award, which is given to the student-athlete who demonstrates the most school spirit.

Joslyn Barnes (track and field) and Cody Whitehair (football) were this year’s recipients of the Bob and Lila Snell Award of Excellence and Effort, recognizing the outstanding male and female student-athletes who improved their academic standing through sustained effort and commitment to learning.

Chris Campbell (track and field) was honored with the Gina Sylvester Memorial Award.  The award recognizes an arts and sciences student who has progressed toward graduation and used the advising system to overcome challenges.

Morgan Burns (football) was the recipient of the Veryl and Fern Switzer Campus Leadership Award.  The award recognizes a student-athlete who is involved in student organizations and multicultural affairs, demonstrates leadership on a team and on campus, and is active in community service. Dillon Wilson (football) and Kali Retzler (equestrian) were also honored with the Outstanding Service to the Community awards.

Two student-athletes were awarded the Scholastic Achievement Award, which recognizes a senior letterwinner with the highest cumulative grade-point average in undergraduate work, as Erika Schiller (track and field) and Beth DeMars (rowing) both were honored.

The athletics department has had another outstanding academic year in 2014-15. A total of five student-athletes were Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award winners, while 269 were named to the Fall 2014 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, the most since 2008.

Indians rough up Danny Duffy, roll to 10-3 win over Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Just about everyone in the Cleveland lineup drove in a run, Carlos Carrasco tossed seven sharp innings and the Indians rolled to a 10-3 win kc royalsover the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

Brandon Moss homered and added a two-run double to lead the charge, but six other Indians also drove in runs, helping Carrasco (4-2) end a three-game skid against the Royals.

He gave up a two-run homer to Kendrys Morales, but otherwise shut down a Kansas City lineup that returned hot-hitting outfielder Lorenzo Cain from a two-game suspension.

Cleveland had already taken a 4-0 lead when Danny Duffy (2-1) was yanked after facing five batters without getting an out in the second. The Royals’ bullpen briefly slowed the onslaught, but the Indians added four more runs in the seventh to put the game away.

Big 12 Reaches Agreement on Conference Tiebreaker

The Big 12 reached an agreement Wednesday on a new tiebreaker process. According to ESPN, the new plan would honor head-to-head results in a two-team tie. This was agreed upon by the Big 12 coaches and BIG 12 LOGOathletic directors at the end of the spring meetings in Phoenix, AZ in an unanimous decision.

If three teams are tied, and the records of the teams against each other doesn’t break the tie, their records against the next-highest team in the standings would be compared. If there is still no winner, scoring differentials between the teams would be the deciding factor. The final decision, should none of these steps decide a winner, would be for the conference office to draw the winner.

Last year both Baylor and TCU were named co-champions and awarded Big 12 title trophies.

Royals bring All-Star closer Greg Holland off disabled list

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals activated All-Star closer Greg Holland from the disabled list and optioned reliever Yohan Pino to Triple-A Omaha before their game Wednesday night against Cleveland.

Holland had been out since April 18, the day after picking up his fourth save of the kc royalsseason, so that he could rest a chest muscle that had been causing him problems for a while.

Since the start of 2013, Holland has 97 saves – the most in the American League.

Wade Davis has been serving as the closer in his absence, and has racked up six saves this season. He will return to his role handling the eighth inning.

Pino had not allowed a run in four games covering 10 2-3 innings.

Hosmer Homer, Vargas Pitching Sends Royals Past Indians

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer, Jason Vargas shut down the Indians for the second straight start, and the Kansas City Royals went on to beat Cleveland 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Hosmer also had an RBI triple in the eighth inning, and Alex Gordon drove in another run for the kcr twoRoyals, who bounced back nicely after losing two straight to Detroit over the weekend.

Vargas (3-1) only allowed two hits, one a two-run shot by Michael Brantley, over six stingy innings. He struck out five while walking two and was rarely in trouble.

Ryan Madson pitched a perfect seventh for Kansas City, but Kelvin Herrera served up a homer to Lonnie Chisenhall in the eighth, ending his streak of 105 1-3 innings without allowing one.

Herrera still handed over a lead to Wade Davis, who cruised through the ninth for his sixth save.

Chiefs Moves

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs placed four players on waivers Tuesday, including former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who had been signed in the offseason and was trying to earn a backup job.chiefs logo

The Chiefs did not choose a quarterback in last week’s draft, but they already have Alex Smith, Chase Daniel, Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray on the roster. They are also expected to add a couple of undrafted quarterbacks as free agents in the coming days.

Pryor was 3-7 as a starter over three seasons in Oakland. He has not played since 2013.

The Chiefs also waived linebacker JoJo Dickson, wide receiver Corbin Louks and long snapper Jorgen Hus on Tuesday.

Bowlsby Backs Off Title Game Talk

PHOENIX (AP) – The Big 12 has tapped the brakes on the conference championship game talk.

Last week, Commissioner Bob Bowlsby strongly suggested the league would move toward bringing back its football championship to improve its chances of putting a team in the College Football Playoff.BIG 12 LOGO

After meeting with coaches and athletic directors Tuesday, Bowlsby says he does not sense the conference is headed toward a title game.

“We all believe one year is not a long enough trial to draw any conclusions,” he said.

The Big 12 is the only Big Five conference without a title game. Last season, co-champions TCU and Baylor were left out of the College Football Playoff after finishing behind Ohio State, which surged into the semifinals with 59-0 victory in the Big Ten title game against Wisconsin.

New Turf Approved for Al Simpler Stadium

The Geary USD 475 Board of Education has given the green light for the purchase of new field turf for the Al Simpler Stadium at Junction City High School.

The cost will be $315, 213.jcfb

JCHS Athletic Director Matt Westerhaus explained over the past four to five years there have been issues with fiber degradation in the current turf.  “A big portion of the turf you can kind of rip that fiber off. ”

The school district had one year warranty remaining on the existing turf, which was initially forecast to last for 10 years. Normally the cost of a new field through the company, FieldTurf is approximately $450,000. District officials held dialogues with the company believing they should prorate the cost of a new field based upon the remaining one year of warranty and three years of anticipated playability. The company then qouted the district the lower price of $315,213.
