Royals Rout Yankees

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Lorenzo Cain had a career-high five RBIs, Kendrys Morales drove in three more runs and the Kansas City Royals routed the New York Yankees 12-1 on Friday night.

The Royals scored six times in the sixth inning while knocking Yankees starter Michael Pineda from the kcr fivegame, then cruised the rest of the way to open a three-game set between division leaders by dealing New York its season-high fourth consecutive loss.

Chris Young (3-0) allowed just four hits and two walks over 5 2-3 innings, making another strong case for a permanent spot in the starting rotation. The 6-foot-10 veteran made his third spot start in place of Jason Vargas, who is on the disabled list with a hip flexor injury.

Pineda (5-1), coming off a masterful 16-strikeout performance against Baltimore, only struck out one while matching a career worst with 10 hits.

Chiefs Moves

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs signed their three remaining draft picks on Friday, including first-round selection Marcus Peters, bringing all nine under contract before rookie minicamp.

Peters was kicked off the Washington Huskies after run-ins with coaches last year.

Kansas City’s three-day rookie minicamp begins Saturday.

To clear roster space, the Chiefs waived tight end Brandon Barden and defensive tackle Hebron Fangupo.

NCAA Committee Calls for Switch to 30-Second Shot Clock

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee has recommended reducing the shot clock from 35 to 30 seconds among a series of changes aimed at speeding up a game that has reached historic lows in scoring.little basketballs

The NCAA experimented with a 30-second shot clock during the NIT and CIT postseason tournaments and the rules committee recommended making it permanent for the 2015-16 season. The shot clock was last reduced for the 1993-94 season, from 45 to 35 seconds.

Scoring in college basketball hit an all-time low in 2012-13 and nearly matched it last season, when teams scored 67.6 points per game.

The committee also recommended extending the restricted arc from three to four feet to reduce the number of collisions under the basket. Teams also would have one less second-half timeout.

ksu - csu

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State will resume the Wichita Wildcat Classic basketball series at Wichita’s INTRUST Bank Arena when the Wildcats host Mountain West foe Colorado State on Saturday, December 19, 2015.

The game will be the Wildcats’ third in Wichita in the last five years, following tilts with West Virginia in 2011 and Gonzaga in 2013.

“We are excited to return to INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita to play a quality opponent in Colorado State,” said head coach Bruce Weber. “I know that our fan base has fond memories of our last visit in 2013 when we knocked off Gonzaga, so I know they will again pack the arena with purple.”

The two-game agreement calls for a return game to the Pepsi Center in Denver on December 17, 2016.

Tickets for the Wichita Wildcat Classic will be available first to men’s basketball season ticket holders and Ahearn Fund members and can be purchased through the K-State Athletics Ticket Office by calling (800) 221.CATS or online atwww.kstatesports.com/tickets when 2015-16 season tickets go on sale Wednesday, June 10. General public tickets will go on through INTRUST Bank Arena, www.selectaseat.com, and the K-State Ticket Office on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Tickets are priced at $62 for lower-level sideline seating, $42 for lower-level corner seating, $22 for lower end seating behind the baskets, $22 for the upper level sidelines seating and $12 each for seating behind the baskets in the upper level at the INTRUST Bank Arena. Groups of 12 or more can purchase tickets for $12 each in the lower-level end behind the baskets and upper level sidelines and $7 each behind the baskets in the upper level.

There will be a discount for season ticket holders and Ahearn Fund members who order by the priority ticket deadline – Friday, July 24 – with their season ticket renewals. These fans will be able to pre-order lower-level sideline seating for $50, lower-level corner seating for $30 and lower end seating behind the baskets for $15. All tickets ordered through the pre-sale will be assigned in order of athletic department priority points prior to the general public sale.

An allotment of $10 student tickets will be available to K-State students through the ticket office in the fall.

The game will mark the 13th meeting between the schools and the first at a neutral site. K-State holds a 7-5 edge in a series that dates to 1937 with wins in two of the last three meetings. The teams split a home-and-home series during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons with each winning on its own home court. The Wildcats are 7-0 all-time in the series in the state of Kansas (all in Manhattan), while the Rams are 5-0 in state of Colorado (all in Fort Collins).

“Colorado State is a great component of what we think will be another strong non-conference schedule,” said Weber. “They return three starters from a team that won a school-record 27-games and was one of the top seeds in the NIT this past year, so our young team will have to be prepared for a challenging contest.”

The game will mark the third time that K-State has played in the 5-year-old arena, which includes previous matchups with West Virginia in 2011 and Gonzaga in 2013. In their last visit, the Wildcats knocked off the 21st-ranked Bulldogs, 72-62, on Dec. 21, 2013 before 13,224 fans despite a winter storm that blanketed the area with snow and ice. A sellout crowd of 15,004 fans saw the double-overtime tilt with the Mountaineers on Dec. 8, 2011.

The Wildcats will return seven lettermen, including four players with starting experience, in 2015-16 to go with the influx of at least six newcomers, including Mr. Kansas Basketball Dean Wade (St. John, Kansas/St. John) and NJCAA First Team All-American Carlbe Ervin II (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma/Connors State College). Senior guard Justin Edwards (6.3 ppg., 3.3 rpg.) is the team’s top returner in both scoring and steals (37), while junior forward Wesley Iwundu (5.8 ppg., 3.5 rpg.) is the leading returner in rebounding (108), assists (61), blocks (20) and minutes (780).

Colorado State is set to return seven lettermen and three starters in 2015-16 from a team that posted a 27-7 overall record and was one of four No. 1 seeds in the NIT. Among the lettermen returning for the Rams include senior guard Gian Clavell (9.2 ppg., 3.7 rpg.) and junior guard John Gillon (7.9 ppg., 3.2 apg.), who was named the Mountain West Sixth Man of the Year this past season.

In addition to the neutral site contest in Wichita, K-State will participate in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at Kansas City’s Sprint Center, November 23-24, which also includes two home games at Bramlage Coliseum. In all, fans will be able to catch the Wildcats in action in as many as 21 games between the three venues in 2015-16.

A full non-conference slate, as well as 2015-16 season ticket plan details, will be released in the coming months.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State will host Ole Miss as part of the third annual Big 12/SEC Challenge Presented by Sonic on Saturday, January 30 at Bramlage Coliseum, the two conferences announced Thursday afternoon.

The match-up will mark the second time in the past three seasons that the Wildcats have hosted the Rebels in the event, as K-State won the inaugural game in the Challenge, 61-58, over Ole Miss at home on December 5, 2013.

The game will be one of 10 contested between the two leagues for the third consecutive season with ESPN providing coverage of all games on its family of networks. All the contests will occur on January 30 with start times and complete television information to be released at a later date.

The Big 12 has won the first two Challenge series, posting a cumulative 13-7 (.650) record. Overall, the league is 41-27 (.603) in its last three challenge series (vs. Pac-10 and SEC) dating back to 2007.

“The Challenge series provides great competition and exposure for both leagues,” said head coach Bruce Weber. “High-quality, non-conference opponents are always hard to find, so to be able host a team like Ole Miss, which has been to the NCAA Tournament twice in the past three seasons, is not only a great opportunity for our team but also gives our fans another terrific home game.”

Overall, K-State is 159-147 against teams from the SEC, which includes a 65-64 loss at Tennessee in the second edition of the Challenge last season at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville.

K-State has met at least one SEC opponent in each of the last seven seasons and will now play at least three in 2015-16 as the school will return games with Georgia and Texas A&M. There is a possibility of a fourth match-up, as the Wildcats could face former Big 12 foe Missouri in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the Sprint Center, November 23-24.

Ole Miss leads the all-time series, 3-1, including a 1-1 mark in its two previous meetings at Bramlage Coliseum. All four previous match-ups have come since 2000 with the Rebels sweeping a home-and-home series during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons to go with an 86-74 win at the 2009 Puerto Rico Tipoff.

Ole Miss is set to return nine lettermen and three starters in 2015-16 from a team that posted a 21-13 overall record and advanced to the round of 64 in the NCAA Tournament, where the Rebels lost to Xavier. Among the team’s returning starters are first team All-SEC selection Stefan Moody (16.6 ppg., 3.4 rpg.), junior forward Sebastian Saiz (7.6 ppg., 5.5 rpg.) and senior forwardMartavious Newby (4.0 ppg., 5.4 rpg.).

The remaining non-conference schedule will be released in the coming weeks.

K-State Mourns the Passing of Bill Guthridge

 bill gutheridge

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Former Kansas State basketball player and assistant coach Bill Guthridge passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 77 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

A consensus National Coach of the Year in 1998 as head coach at North Carolina, Guthridge played three seasons for Naismith and College Basketball Hall of Fame head coach Fred “Tex” Winter from 1957-60. The 6-foot, 160-pound guard from Parsons, Kansas helped the Wildcats to a 63-17 (.788) record during his playing career, which included a trip to the 1958 Final Four and three consecutive Big Seven/Eight Conference titles in 1958, 1959 and 1960. He played in 41 games in his playing career, scoring 111 points.

Guthridge was a member of one of the greatest men’s basketball teams in school history – the 1958-59 squad – which posted a 25-2 record and held the school’s only No. 1 ranking before being upset in the NCAA Midwest Regional Final by Oscar Robertson and No. 5 Cincinnati.

An all-around athlete (basketball, football and golf) at Parsons High School, Guthridge played freshman basketball at Parsons Junior College in 1956-57 before transferring to K-State.

Following a stint as the head basketball coach at Scott City High School in Scott City, Kansas, Guthridge returned to K-State in 1962 to serve as graduate assistant coach of the freshman basketball team. He was elevated to a full-time assistant coach role in 1964, helping Winter guide the Wildcats to a 62-41 (.602) cumulative record for four seasons (1964-68). He was a member of Winter’s last team in 1967-68, which captured the Big Eight title and advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional in Wichita with a 19-9 record.

Guthridge also spent time as school’s ticket manager (1963-64) and was men’s golf coach from 1965-67, leading the Wildcats to a third-place finish at the 1965 Big Eight Championships.

Guthridge left K-State in 1967 to become an assistant coach at North Carolina, where he spent 30 years with legendary coach Dean Smith before succeeding him as head coach in 1997. In 33 seasons at UNC, he was part of 960 college coaching victories, including 867 as an assistant coach, two NCAA Championships (1982 and 1993), 12 Final Fours, 16 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season championships, and 13 ACC Tournament titles. He also mentored five National Players of the Year, six ACC Players of the Year, five ACC Rookies of the Year and 28 first team All-ACC players. He coached 66 players who were selected in the NBA and/or ABA Drafts.

Guthridge posted an 80-28 record in three seasons (1997-2000) as head coach at North Carolina, guiding the Tar Heels to the 1998 and 2000 Final Fours. He joined Ohio State’s Fred Taylor as just the second coach in NCAA history to lead teams to two Final Fours in his first three seasons as a head coach. He was named National Coach of the Year in 1997-98 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), the Atlanta Tipoff Club, CBS/Chevrolet, the Columbus (Ohio) Touchdown Club and The Sporting News after helping the Tar Heels to a 34-4 record. The 34 wins still ranks as the most by a first-year head coach in NCAA history.

Guthridge retired from coaching after leading North Carolina to the Final Four in 2000.

In addition to his college coaching accolades, Guthridge was an assistant coach to Smith – along with Hall of Fame coach John Thompson – in 1976 when the United States won the Olympic gold medal in Montreal.

Guthridge earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from K-State in 1960 and a master’s in physical education from the school in 1963. He and his wife, Leesie, had two sons, Jamie and Stuart, and a daughter, Megan.

Memorial services are pending.
