Big Papi hits 476th homer, Red Sox rout Royals 13-2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – David Ortiz passed two Hall of Famers with his 476th home run, and the Boston Red Sox banged out 13 extra-base hits Sunday in a 13-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Hanley Ramirez hit his team-best 15th homer and Mookie Betts also went deep for thekcr six Red Sox, who set a season high for runs. Xander Bogaerts had three doubles, and Wade Miley pitched six scoreless innings.

Ortiz homered leading off the fourth inning to move past Stan Musial and Willie Stargell into 28th place on the career home run list.

Betts, Brock Holt and Dustin Pedroia, the first three batters in the lineup, each had three of Boston’s 16 hits. They combined to go 9 for 15 with seven runs and six RBIs.

Betts, who missed the cycle by a single, is batting (.556) with nine extra-base hits in a nine-game hitting streak.

Morales Leads Royals to Win Over Red Sox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kendrys Morales homered on his 32nd birthday and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 7-4 on Saturday night.

Morales hit a two-run, tie-breaking shot in a five-run fifth off Rick Porcello (4-8). It was his third career homer on his birthday.

The Red Sox lost third baseman Pablo Sandoval (sprained left ankle) and catcher Blake Swihart (sprained left foot) to injuries and designated hitter David Ortiz was ejected in the seventh inning by home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman.

The Red Sox scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, but Porcello imploded in the bottom of the inning with a hit batter, a balk, a walk and four hits.

Porcello lost his sixth straight, matching his career high set in 2012. He allowed six runs, eight hits, two walks and hit two batters in five innings.

Chiefs Announce Training Camp Schedule

The Kansas City Chiefs announced dates for 2015 Chiefs Training Camp presented by Mosaic Life Care. This year’s practices will begin on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Missouri Western State University. Dates and times for practices listed below are subject to change. Any changes to practice times or availability to the public will be announce through www.chiefs.com and www.gogriffons.com as well as social media outlets.

The first practice will be held at 3:30 p.m. on August 1. A $5 admission fee will be charged that day, which will include a team autograph session. Alumni Day will be held on Aug. 2, also featuring a team autograph session. American Family Fun Day will be Saturday, Aug 8 with practice beginning at 8:15 a.m. A $5 admission fee will also be charged that day. Chiefs Season Ticket Member Appreciation day will be Aug. 12 and Military Appreciation Day will be during the last day of training camp in St. Joseph on Aug. 19. All other practices open to the public are free of charge. Each vehicle will be charged $5 per day for parking on the MWSU campus.

Construction at Spratt Memorial Stadium will create some minimal logistical changes to years past. Those changes will be announced at a later date by Missouri Western State University.

Practices beginning at 8:15 a.m. will last approximately two hours and 40 minutes. Practices beginning at 9:15 a.m. will last approximately one hour and 40 minutes.

Brigade Fall to Kansas City Monarchs

The Kansas City Monarchs scored two runs in the top of the first and went on to defeat the Junction City Brigade at Rathert Field 4-2 Saturday night.

The Brigade ( 10-7 ) tried to rally from a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning by putting runners at first and second base with two out. But Junction City was unsuccessful getting them home.

The Brigade will host the Topeka Senators Monday night at 7 p.m.

Makeup Games Set for Junction City Brigade Baseball

The Junction City Brigade were unable to play a number of games in June due to rain and a wet field.

Brigade General Manager Cecil Aska has announced the makeup dates for those games.

The home games at Rathert Field include:

–Sunday June 28, a doubleheader with the Topeka Golden Giants at 5 and 7 p.m.

–Monday June 29, a single nine inning contest against the Baldwin City Blues at 7 p.m.

–Wednesday July 1, a single nine inning contest against the Topeka Golden Giants at 7 p.m.

The Brigade will also make up a road game at Rossville on Tuesday night June 30.

Blues American Legion Baseball

The Junction City Blues won both ends of an American Legion baseball doubleheader Friday night against Wamego.

According to Blues coach Derrick Scott, Junction City won the first game 15-9, and the second game was a win by forfeit 7-0.

Eduardo Rodriguez Pitches Well in Red Sox Win Over Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Eduardo Rodriguez pitched capably into the seventh inning, Mookie Betts had a career-best four hits and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Friday night.

Rodriguez (3-1), who gave up nine runs in 4 2-3 innings in his previous start against Toronto, allowed one run and six hits in 6 1-3 innings. Alcides Escobar’s RBI-double in the fifth was the first run he allowed on the road in 18 1-3 innings.

The Red Sox batted around in a five-run second inning, which included an RBI-single by Betts. Blake Swihart contributed a two-run double, while Mike Napoli drove in two runs with a single.

Betts is 13 for 22 in his past five games, raising his average to .267.

Boston’s Hanley Ramirez hit his 14th home run in the fifth.

SMASH Tennis Singles Tournament in Junction City

The SMASH Tennis Clinics of Junction City held a singles tournament players in the high performance classes on Friday.

There were three flights of singles, each determined by results and play from the participants in the clinics since the beginning of camp.  Matches began after the conclusion of the Junction City High School strengthand conditioning sessions Friday to allow the players to focus on their conditioning and simulate playing in the final rounds of tennis tournaments.

The results of each singles flight are:

The Junction City Brigade ( 10-6 ) cruised to an easy 13-0 win over the Kansas City Blue Jays ( 2-3 )  Friday night at Rathert Field.

Junction City got four runs in the first running powered by five hits, including a double by Danny Rowley to get the offense going. Bo Ritter got the pitching win in a game which featured assistant coach Andy Lewton pitching the seventh inning in relief, and another assistant coach Jordan Hodges playing the entire contest at second base for the Brigade. Both are former college baseball players.

Junction City head coach Seth Wheeler talked about his starting pitcher, “Bo Ritter started tonight, and he was awesome. I don’t know how many pitches he threw. I think it was about 61, 62, somewhere in there. To go six innings….that’s being really, really efficient.”

The Brigade host the Kansas City Monarchs Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Rathert Field.

Ventura Placed On DL

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura has been put on the 15-day disabled list because of right ulnar nerve inflammation.

Ventura, Kansas City’s opening-day starter, is 3-6 with a 4.68 ERA in 12 starts. He left his Junekcr two12 outing with weakness and numbness in his right hand and fingers, then experienced hand cramps after a bullpen session Wednesday.

Ventura joins left-handed starters Danny Duffy and Jason Vargas on the disabled list.

The AL champions recalled right-hander Yohan Pino from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday, and he is to take Ventura’s turn Friday against Boston. Pino was 4-2 with a 4.93 ERA with Omaha and 0-1 with 0.64 ERA in six relief appearances this season with Kansas City.
