K-State signs transfer running back Jordan Brown

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State added to its backfield depth for the 2019 season on Thursday as former North Carolina running back Jordon Brown signed a financial aid agreement to play for the Wildcats.

Brown, a product of Durham, North Carolina, played the previous three seasons for the Tar Heels, totaling 1,005 yards and eight touchdowns on 239 carries. He was also a threat out of the backfield at UNC, hauling in 46 catches for 342 yards.

Rated the No. 7 all-purpose running back in the Class of 2016 by Rivals, Brown’s best season at North Carolina came as a sophomore in 2017 when he started all 12 games and led the Tar Heels with 613 yards and four touchdowns. He set single-game career highs that season against Old Dominion with 123 yards and two scores, while he had a career-long rush of 56 yards against Miami later that year.

The 2017 season was also his best receiving campaign as he totaled 237 yards on 29 catches, which included three games with at least 50 yards. He had a career-best 57 receiving yards at Georgia Tech on nine catches, while he also had nine grabs for 53 yards in the season opener against California.

Brown totaled 3,408 rushing yards and 57 touchdowns during his final three years in high school, which included 1,705 yards and 26 touchdowns as a senior to help Southern Durham earn a 12-4 record and a runner-up finish in the state playoffs. He also scored the state championship game-winning touchdown as a sophomore on an 80-yard catch-and-run in the final moments of the game.

Royals shut out by Astros

HOUSTON (AP) — After struggling recently while pitching out of the stretch, Brad Peacock went to a full windup Wednesday night and found a little something extra.

Michael Brantley homered twice, Peacock pitched seven innings and Josh James completed the three-hitter in Houston’s 9-0 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Peacock (3-2) allowed three hits and set a career high with 12 strikeouts to help the Astros bounce back after a 12-2 loss Tuesday night. Peacock also rebounded after allowing seven runs in just 3 2/3 innings in his previous start. James struck out five in the last two innings.

“The story of the day for me is the adjustment he made,” manager AJ Hinch said. “His delivery out of the windup has much more rhythm, much more energy. The ball came out better, his execution was better and ultimately his results were better. That’s as good as he’s gotten into a game, and he held it his entire outing. It was an excellent night for him.”

Peacock, who said it was the first time he’d pitch from the windup since 2016, called Wednesday’s start the best of his career.

“What I was doing really wasn’t working too well so I had to make a change,” he said. “I felt really good tonight. I was able to get some rhythm out there and throw my stuff for strikes.”

Kansas City manager Ned Yost said Peacock was tough all night.

“You could tell early on that his stuff was good, his location was good,” he said. “His execution was good. He was keeping his fastball down and away and had a really good slider down and away so you just knew you were in for a battle.”

George Springer and Carlos Correa also homered to give the Astros 16 home runs combined in their past five games.

Springer gave Houston an early lead with his MLB-leading fourth leadoff homer this season and the 28th of his career. It’s the second time this week he’s led off the game with a homer after also doing so in a 6-4 win on Monday.

Houston led 2-0 with one out and one on in the third when Brantley sent a pitch from Jorge Lopez (0-4) into the seats in right field behind the bullpen to make it 4-0.

Correa followed with his shot to straightaway center to give Houston back-to-back homers for the third time this season. Josh Reddick singled before Yuli Gurriel doubled to chase Lopez. He was replaced by Jake Newberry, and Aledmys Diaz’s sacrifice fly scored Reddick to extend the lead to 6-0.

Brantley connected again with two outs in the fourth inning to make it 7-0 and give him his fifth career multihomer game and the first since 2015.

Lopez allowed six hits and six runs while walking three in 2 1/3 innings to remain winless in eight starts this season.

Peacock had allowed just one hit when Terrance Gore and Billy Hamilton hit consecutive singles with one out in the fifth inning. Peacock plunked Whit Merrifield to load the bases, but struck out Adalberto Mondesi and Hunter Dozier to escape the jam.

Those were the first of eight straight batters Peacock retired to end his night. He struck out six in that span, including Martin Maldonado for the first out of the seventh inning. Both Maldonado and Yost were ejected for arguing that strikeout.

He dished out double-digit assists in 39 career games, including six games of 15 or more assists and a career and season-high 19 assists in a 137-76 win over Western Kentucky Tech on January 4, 2019.

Although known for his playmaking ability, Sloan was also an effective scorer for John A. Logan in his career, registering double figures in 45 of 64 games played, which included a pair of 30-point performances as a sophomore in 2018-19. Sloan averaged a double-double as a sophomore in 2018-19, leading the school to a 27-5 overall record, including a 16-2 mark in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play, before losing to conference rival Wabash Valley, 86-84, in the District 16 semifinals. Tenth Inning home run lifts Tigers past the Royals

DETROIT (AP) — After being humiliated by the Kansas City Royals a day earlier, the Detroit Tigers were focused on redemption Sunday.

It came via one of the lesser-known members of the roster.

Journeyman Brandon Dixon, only in the majors due to a series of injuries, hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning to lift the Tigers over the Royals 5-2.

“That’s an unreal feeling,” Dixon said after his first career walkoff homer. “After yesterday, it felt so good to come around third and see the whole team waiting for me at the plate.”

The victory came less than 24 hours after the Tigers allowed 15 runs on 19 hits and 10 walks in a 15-3 loss.

“Obviously, that’s a game that can linger in the mind,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. “I told our guys to let it sting overnight, but once they threw the first pitch today, it had to be gone.”

Nicholas Castellanos started the 10th with an infield single off Ian Kennedy (0-1), and after Miguel Cabrera popped out, Niko Goodrum reached on another infield hit.

Ronny Rodriguez struck out, but Dixon hit a 1-2 curveball over the fence in right-center field.

“Kennedy was throwing fastballs on the corner, so I was really trying to protect the outside corner,” Dixon said. “But that curveball popped out of his hand, and I was able to get a good read on it.”

Kennedy wanted the ball in the dirt.

“I felt like the only bad pitch was that last curveball,” he said. “I meant to bounce it, but I didn’t think he would hit it out. I can’t remember the last time I gave up a homer on a curveball.”

Buck Farmer (2-2) got the win after retiring the last batter in the top of the 10th.

The Tigers led 2-1 going into the eighth and Joe Jimenez struck out the first two Royals, but Hunter Dozier hit his eighth homer over the right field wall to tie it.

Neither starter got a decision. Detroit’s Spencer Turnbull gave up one run in seven innings on six hits and a walk. He struck out seven.

“I felt really good with all my pitches today, and I felt like my slider was really good,” he said. “The best part was getting through seven for the first time this season.”

Brad Keller allowed two runs, six hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings.

The Royals started the second inning with three straight hits, with Kelvin Gutierrez driving home Jorge Soler for a 1-0 lead. Turnbull escaped the inning without further damage.

JaCoby Jones led off the third with a double, Jeimer Candelario walked and Castellanos tied it with a single off Gutierrez’s glove at third. The Tigers still had runners on second and third with none out, but Keller struck out Cabrera and Goodrum before retiring Rodriguez to get out of the inning.

“Keller was really effective up in the zone today,” Yost said. “He was really, really good up there.”

Cabrera made it 2-1 with an RBI single in the fifth, and the Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Scott Barlow replaced Keller and struck out Jones and Candelario.
