Blue Jay Basketball Begins Season

jc boys basketball oneApproximately 80 players are trying out for a spot on the Junction City Blue Jay boys basketball team this week.

Coach Pat Battle has a number of returning players with experience at the guard positions such as Ricardo Ehrens, T. J. Poole, Reggie Topps, Jovan Baldwin, Tim Bell, Walter Wadford, and Lonnie Autry. “We’ve got a ton of two’s, three’s, the point guard situation will work itself out. They’re really good ball handlers. It might take some time there from a standpoint of decision making. But Christian Ozores is someone who could potentially fill that role.”

There is also competition at the front line spots. “It’s the most depth that we’ve had since I’ve been here.”

The final roster will be pared down later this week. The Blue Jays will play their season opener when they host Salina Central on Friday, December 4th.

The Chiefs announced the moves Tuesday.

O’Shaughnessy, their fifth-round pick this year, has missed Kansas City’s past two games with a fractured foot. He caught six passes for 87 yards during his rookie season.

Kansas State Rolls to 81-71 Victory Over Columbia

The Kansas State Men’s Basketball remains a perfect 3-0 all-time against Ivy League schools with Monday night’s 81-71 win over Columbia.

KSU COLUMBIA 11-16
(Left to Right) Justin Edwards, Bruce Weber, Dean Wade

There are still plenty of questions surrounding the Wildcat’s, who were unanimously picked to finish tied for 8th place in the Big 12 preseason poll. But there were signs of promise Monday night starting with the Wildcats starting five all finishing in double figure scoring.

That group was led by Justin Edwards who finished with 19 points, a team-high 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. Not far behind Edwards was true freshman Dean Wade who finished with 17 points in just his second college game.

Big plays proved to be the difference for Kansas State as they never surrendered their lead but did let it slip to within three with 5:45 to play in the game, but an 11-0 run kicked off by a DJ Johnson dunk took Kansas States lead back to double digits.

“You win at home when you make plays. We had some guys step up,” said Bruce Weber after the game. “The first thing I wrote on the board is, ‘Be a player, don’t watch the play, make plays.’ I hope they took it to heart, but they did a good job at making plays and passing. 17 assists on 30 baskets. We have to get better on some things but there are a lot of positives.”

The Wildcats will now face their first major test of the season as they will play three games within five days starting Friday at home against South Dakota. They then travel to Kansas City Monday to take on Missouri and then North Carolina or North Western Tuesday night in the CBE Hall-of-Fame Classic at the Sprint Center.

Release from K-State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a school-record breaking unnamed (12)performance last week at Texas Tech, senior kick returner Morgan Burns was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

The honor was the first in Burns’ career, while it was the second for the Wildcats this season after place kicker Jack Cantele was honored following the Louisiana Tech game. A LOOK AT K-STATE

  • K-State has three games remaining, two of which are at home, and still remain in contention for bowl eligibility.
  • The Cats, guided by 2015 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Bill Snyder, are 3-6 this year, which includes close losses to No. 19 OSU, No. 2 TCU and No. 2 Baylor.
  • K-State took the Horned Frogs down to the wire behind four rushing touchdowns by Joe Hubener and two more from running back Charles Jones. The Cats tied the game at 45 with 1:47 left, but TCU scored a late TD for the win.
  • That came a week after K-State took a 34-33 lead over OSU in Stillwater with 3:01 left, but the Cowboys kicked a field goal with less than a minute left for a two-point win.
  • Hubener then ran for a career-best 153 yards against the second-ranked Bears as the Cats had the ball with less than a minute to play in the game with a chance to tie the game.
  • Jones has been fantastic of late, rushing for 390 yards in the last five games. The junior had a career-best 122-yard effort at Texas, the most by a K-State running back since the final regular-season game of 2013.
  • Defensively, the Cats are paced by linebackers Elijah Lee and Will Davis with 58 and 47 tackles, respectively. The two have also combined for all three Wildcat interceptions this year, including two by Lee against TCU.
  • Defensive tackles Travis Britz and Will Geary have also been a force, combining for 65 tackles (7.22 per game), 14.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

A LOOK AT IOWA STATE

  • Iowa State enters Saturday’s game at 3-7 and 2-5 in the Big 12 after a tough 35-31 loss to undefeated OSU.

  • The Cyclones are led by a trio of young players as freshman running back Mike Warren has rushed for 1,070 yards, sophomore quarterback Joel Lanning has emerged late in the season and sophomore wide receiver Allen Lazard leads the team with 46 catches for 647 yards.
  • On defense, Brian Peavy has a team-best 71 tackles and two interceptions, while Dale Pierson has 12.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks.
