Blue Jays Defeat Dodge City – Lady Jays Fall

small blue jayThe Junction City Blue Jays turned in a strong performance on defense enroute to a 52-44 boys basketball victory over Dodge City ( 0-1 ) Saturday afternoon.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle said a big difference from the team’s loss to Salina Central Friday night was that Junction City executed. “Played basic basketball, we shared the ball better, we found the open guy, and we got some runouts in transition. Our defense created some offense tonight a little bit to.”

Ricardo Erans led the Blue Jays with 16 points as they evened their season record at 1-1.

In the girls varsity contest Dodge City ( 1-0 ) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and went on to defeat the Lady Jays 67-35.  Alana Kramer and A’kia Fain both had six points for Junction City.

The Lady Jays fell to 0-2 with the loss.

Mason Leads Kansas Past Harvard

jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Frank Mason III scored 21 points and Perry Ellis added 12 as No. 4 Kansas beats Harvard 75-69 in a sloppy game on Saturday.

Devonte’ Graham also had 12 points for Kansas (6-1).

Freshman reserve Weisner Perez had 15 points, Tommy McCarthy added 11 and Zena Edosomwan had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Crimson (2-6) in their third straight loss.

Midway through the first half, freshman Cheick Diallo pulled up and hit a mid-range jumper to put Kansas up 15-12. That jumper started a 17-4 run for the Jayhawks. Kansas scored only four points in the final 6 minutes of the first half.

The Jayhawks came out of halftime scoring four points in less than 40 seconds, but fell flat offensively after that, going a full 2 minutes without scoring. In that time, Harvard cut Kansas’ lead from 13 to nine, and subsequently got within four after Evan Cummins dunked.

Kansas State rallies for 24-23 win over West Virginia

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Wide receiver Cody Cook led Kansas State to a pair of touchdowns as the emergency quarterback, Morgan Burns returned a kickoff 97 yards for the go-ahead score wildcatand the Wildcats beat West Virginia 24-23 on Saturday night to become bowl-eligible.

Taking over for the injured Joe Hubener, Cook ran for a touchdown and hit Deante Burton with a 77-yard scoring strike to help the Wildcats (6-6, 3-5 Big 12) win their third straight game.

Most importantly, it gave Kansas State six wins and its sixth straight bowl berth.

Wendell Smallwood ran for 141 yards and a touchdown for West Virginia (7-5, 4-6), but he didn’t have the ball in his hands with the game on the line. Instead, quarterback Skyler Howard was stopped by Charmeachealle Moore on fourth-and-2 at their own 46 with 2:33 left to turn over the ball.

The Wildcats picked up enough first downs to essentially run out the clock.

Rough Opening Night for Junction City Basketball

small blue jaySalina Central blew open a close game in the second half and rolled to a 60-42 boys basketball win over the Junction City Blue Jays at the Shenk Gym.

The Mustangs led the game 26-24 at halftime, but then outscored Junction City 34-18 over the final two quarters. Blue Jay coach Pat Battle said his team missed a lot of chip shots inside, particularly in the third quarter,  when they had an opportunity to take the lead. “That was part of it, and then we got into a mode where we had to go out and chase them. They had good ballhandlers. They did a really good job. You’ve got to give credit to them. They outplayed us in the second half. There’s just no doubt about it.”

Brayden Neuschafter hit 10 of 11 free throws for the game and as a team the Mustangs  hit 15 of 17 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Junction City was led in scoring by Josh Hall with 12 points.

In the girls varsity game Salina Central took the lead early and never relinquished it enroute to a 64-34 victory over Junction City.

Despite the loss Lady Jay coach Derek Petty thought the Lady Jays played well in spurts. “When we played our game in those spurts we were a better team I honestly believe. They had a pretty big lead on us and we cut it to eight pretty easily playing good defense and making our easy tries at the basket.”

Junction City was led in scoring by Imari Williams and Alana Kramer with six points apiece.

The Junction City boys and girls basketball teams play at Dodge City Saturday afternoon. The girls game is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. and the boys game at 4 p.m.

Trailing 65-64, Kansas State called timeout with 1:13 remaining. Wade’s jumper with 56 seconds remaining gave the Wildcats a 66-65 lead. Georgia’s Mike Edwards sank one of two free throws for a 66-all tie, but Wade answered with the short baseline jumper.

Blue Jay Wrestlers Split Season Opening Duals

blue jay wr oneThe Junction City Blue Jay wrestling team opened with a 45-36 loss to Clay Center but came back to hold off Chapman 39-36 in a double dual in Chapman Thursday evening.

JCHS coach Bob Laster knows he has a young team. “We have a bunch of guys that don’t have any varsity experience. This is totally different from when they wrestled on j-v so I have some work to do to try to get these guys up to varsity level.” Laster added he’s not giving up on this team, noting they’re just starting out. “I was really disappointed with our loss to Clay Center because out of the 14 matches I think we got pinned seven times. If they ( Blue Jays ) lost by regular points we would have ended up winning against Clay Center, but I told our team you can’t give up the big points.” Laster noted that’s exactly what happened in the Clay Center match.

In the Chapman match the Blue Jays were ahead by a substantial margin, but the Irish won the last three matches in the heavier weights to make it a close final score.

Junction City will compete in an invitational at Gardner – Edgerton on Saturday.

Blue Jay Wrestling Team to Open Season

small blue jayThe Junction City Blue Jay wrestling team opens with a double dual at Chapman Thursday evening.

Junction City coach Bob Laster is working with a relatively young team this season. He’ll be watching for confidence. “As far as the confidence of my wrestlers, as far as where they’re at. Most of them have been wrestling for a long time, but they don’t have a lot of varsity experience. So that’s one of the things that I’m looking for, is how they respond.

In the first match of the night Chapman and Clay Center will wrestle at 5:30 p.m. Then the Blue Jays meet Clay Center, and in the final match Junction City and Chapman will wrestle.

Some of the Blue Jays on varsity will include Max Bazan, Hunter Bogenhagan, Kamari Smith, Demarcus Smith, Malik White, Jeffrey Walters, and eventually Aryus Jones. Jones is currently recovering from a football injury.
