Chiefs Hang On for Win

chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs kept the San Diego Chargers out of the end zone twice in the final seconds Sunday, preserving a 10-3 victory and their seventh consecutive win.

Alex Smith threw for 191 yards and a touchdown, along with his first interception after a franchise-record 312 attempts. But it was a banged-up defense that held San Diego without a touchdown for the second time this season that allowed the Chiefs (8-5) to escape.

The Chargers (3-10) took over at their own 11 with 5 minutes left and quickly moved into Kansas City territory, converting fourth down three times. But after San Diego was called for delay of game at the Chiefs 1 with 5 seconds left, Philip Rivers threw incomplete into the end zone.

Review of Wichita State Athletics Considers Football

shockersWICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Wichita State University President John Bardo says the school’s athletic department is being thoroughly reviewed, including discussing whether to resume football.

The Wichita Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1NMH0uh) ) Bardo and deputy athletic director Darron Boatright are in the early stages of the department review and decisions about its future could take up to a year.

The university dropped its football program after the 1986 season. Reviving the program was last seriously discussed in 1998.

Bardo said Tuesday he is seeking input from Wichita residents and alumni about what they want in an athletic program and what they will pay to support. The discussion will include which conference Wichita State should play in.

Bardo and Boatright also are consulting other schools and conferences and likely will hire consultants and form committees.

Wildcats Fall to Texas A & M

wildcat twoCOLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) – Senior Jalen Jones scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Texas A&M pulled away for a 78-68 victory over Kansas State on Saturday.

The Aggies (8-2) led 43-42 with 13:47 remaining before outscoring the Wildcats (7-2) 23-6 over the next eight minutes. In that span, Jones scored 10 points, including a long 3-pointer above the key to lift A&M to a 64-45 lead with 6:02 remaining.

Wesley Iwundu led the Wildcats with 23 points, while D.J. Johnson followed with 14.

Alex Caruso added 13 points and Tyler Davis 10 for the Aggies, who shot 54 percent from the field.

A&M, in displaying the depth fifth-year coach Billy Kennedy has championed this season, outscored KSU 39-20 off the bench.

The Aggies rebounded from a 67-54 loss at Arizona State on Dec. 5, while snapping a three-game winning streak for KSU in the battle of former Big 12 foes.

Blue Jays Post Second Win – Lady Jays Lose Heartbreaker

small blue jay( Great Bend ) — The Junction City Blue Jay boys basketball team ( 2-1 ) raced out to a 20-5 first quarter lead and never really looked back enroute to a 65-45 win over the Great Bend Panthers ( 2-2 ).

The Blue Jays used a strong defensive and their best shooting half of the season to build the lead to 36-20 at halftime. In the first half Junction City hit four three-point baskets, including three by T. J. Poole and one by Ricardo Erans.  Junction City cooled off in the second half but the defense remained strong. The closest Great Bend got in the second half was 11 points.

Junction City finished with 23 points from Poole and 14 from Ricardo Erans.

In the girls game the Lady Jays  ( 0-3 ) appeared enroute to their own win, but in the closing minutes of the game coughed up a nine-point lead, and fell to Great Bend 65-64.

The winning basket for Great Bend ( 3-1 ) came after the Lady Panthers’ Carley Brack missed a free throw but got a shot after her miss, and from the right wing put up a shot that went in at the final buzzer. Brack had made the first of two free throws to pull Great Bend to within one point, but then missed the second, got the ball back and hit the game winning shot.

The Lady Jays missed four key free throws in the closing seconds of the game that could have sealed a win. Instead they fell to 0-3. Junction City got 12 points from both Kealee Rains and A’kia Fain plus 11 from Ally McKenzie in what was still their best game of the season to this point.

Blue Jays Lose Their Heavyweight Wrestler

small blue jayJunction City Blue Jay wrestler Malik White suffered a serious leg injury in practice Wednesday. He has been competing in the heavyweight class for the Blue Jays.

Coach Bob Laster confirmed the injury. “My heavyweight, Malik White, is out for the year. He had a leg injury at practice. Don’t know the severity of it yet, but I’m pretty sure that he’s gone for the season.”

Laster said at this moment the Blue Jays do not have anyone to replace White. There are some 220 pound wrestlers on the team, but he is unsure if he will move one of them up to heavyweight.

Malik White is a senior at Junction City High School.
