Wade Comes off Bench and Has Career Game in Win over #1 Oklahoma

For the first time since his Sophomore year of high school, Dean Wade didn’t get the start Saturday for Kansas State against #1/2 ranked Oklahoma, but it didn’t stop him from having the best game of his career in a K-State jersey.

The highly touted 6′ 10″, 225 lb. freshman out of St. John, Ks, had started every game this season up until Saturday night. D.J. Johnson started in Wade’s place, simply because he had been playing better than Wade as of late according to Bruce Weber.

“I have talked to Dean and I have talked to his parents. He knows it. I told him to get mad at me. I want you to be mad at me. I am going to sit you down, and I want you to be mad because he just needed a little fire,” said Weber.

It apparently worked as Wade finished with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists in the Wildcats 80-69 upset of Oklahoma.

Wade says he wasn’t mad that he was benched, because he is hardly ever mad, but instead,”It let me feel the game more, just watching and being able to see how it was going, with the speed of the game, it settled me down. I was a lot more comfortable when I came in.”

Wade wasn’t the only player to contribute off the bench for Kansas State as Justin Edwards also finished with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Kansas State Downs #1 Oklahoma 80-69

After having numerous opportunities throughout the season to take down a top 25 ranked team, Kansas State finally comes through, beating the top ranked team Oklahoma 80-69 Saturday evening at Bramlage Coliseum.

Instead of Students Storming the Court, Players Storm the Crowd

A strong defensive effort and special play by Wesley Iwundu helped the Wildcats along the way. Iwundu finished with 22 points, 7 assists and just one turnover to lead Kansas State.

“He was special, there’s no doubt. You need somebody to step up and be special,” said Weber. “You need somebody to be special, but these guys, the whole team did a great job. It was a team win there’s no doubt, but Wes spearheaded it.”

The Wildcats were 0-8 against ranked teams this season, including overtime losses to West Virginia and Baylor. Weber now improves to 4-0 at Bramlage Coliseum against the Lon Kruger led Sooners.

“It’s tough to win on the road period, the K-State club fought and competed hard, and it’s just hard to win, hard to win games,” said Kruger about losing four straight in Bramlage.

Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield, was held in check by Iwundu. Scoring his 23 points for the game was not made easy, going just 3-8 from three-point land.

“Everyone is going to make it tough for me. I just have to find a way to score the ball,” said Hield. “I started attacking better late in the second half, and I should have done that Earlier. I just have to do a better job. They had a great game trying to defend me.”

Oklahoma falls to (19-3, 7-3), and Kansas State improved to (14-9, 3-7).

The Sooners will have the quick turnaround, as they host Texas Monday night in the Big Monday matchup on ESPN. Kansas State now has a couple extra days before getting right back at it against #15/13 Baylor Wednesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.

KU Rolls Past TCU

jayhawkFORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Perry Ellis had 23 points and 10 rebounds as No. 7 Kansas started the second half of the Big 12 Conference schedule with a 75-56 victory at TCU on Saturday.

The Jayhawks (19-4, 7-3 Big 12) had lost their previous three conference road games. They never trailed after scoring the game’s first seven points.

With the quick start and in a road arena about half-filled with their own fans, the Jayhawks won for the 12th time in 13 games against TCU (10-13, 1-9). The Horned Frogs’ only victory in the series came exactly three years ago Saturday, when they won in the Big 12 for the first time.

Devonte Graham added 15 points for the Jayhawks, who shot 50 percent from the field (29 of 58) and had a 46-25 rebounding advantage.

Brandon Parrish and JD Miller each had 13 points for TCU (10-13,

Blue Jays Win in the Dungeon

small blue jayThe Junction City Blue Jays ( 6-8 ) used a balanced scoring attack and stingy defense to defeat the Topeka High Trojans ( 6-8 ) 56-50 in the Trojans’ gym, called ‘The Dungeon.”

T. J. Poole led the Blue Jays with 15 points and Reggie Topps poured in 10 for Junction City in the victory.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle felt his team played well. “It was a real tough, great win. We had to do some adjustments on the fly. And we played a variety of different defenses tonight.” Battle added he was proud of his players. “They threw a triangle and two at us. We know it’s been coming on T. J. and Ricardo ( Erans ). We did a good job of executing what we planned to do against a triangle and two ( defense ).”

Topeka High ( 7-7 )  stormed out to a 9-0 lead in the varsity girls game and held a 10-point lead at halftime over Junction City ( 1-13 ). They opened the margin to 16 points ater three and then got 11 points from Erica Birch and 12 points from Adrianna Henderson in the fourth quarter enroute to an 82-53 win over the Lady Jays. Turnovers were a problem for Junction City in the ballgame.

QUICK HITTERS

  • Kansas State (13-9, 2-7 Big 12) continues Big 12 play on Saturday night, as the Wildcats welcome all-time great Lon Kruger and his top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners (19-2, 7-2 Big 12) to Bramlage Coliseum for a 5 p.m. CT tip. Jason Benetti and Reid Gettys will call the action on ESPNU.
  • Kruger was both a player and coach at K-State, earning Big Eight Player of the Year honors (1973 & 1974) during his playing career for legendary coach Jack Hartman from 1971-74 before serving as an assistant coach to Hartman from 1977-82 and head coach from 1986-90.
  • Interestingly enough, Kruger was K-State’s head coach when they last faced a No. 1 Oklahoma team at Bramlage Coliseum, as the Wildcats lost 90-82 on Feb. 1, 1989. It was also the first No. 1 team to ever visit the arena.
  • Saturday’s game will be the 7th against an AP No. 1 team at Bramlage Coliseum and the first since beating top-ranked Kansas, 84-68, on Feb. 14, 2011. The list includes Oklahoma in 1989, Missouri in 1990, Kansas in 1993, 1997 and 2011 and Texas in 2010. Overall, the Wildcats are 4-13 vs. No. 1 with 3 of the 4 wins coming at Bramlage Coliseum (Missouri, 65-58, in Feb. 8, 1990, Texas, 71-62, in Jan. 18, 2010 and Kansas, 84-68, in 2011).
  • K-State has faced Oklahoma 3 times as No. 1, losing 90-82 at home on Feb. 1, 1989, 86-82 in Norman on Feb. 22, 1989 and 86-76 earlier this year on Jan. 9 in Norman when the Sooners were No. 1 in the Coaches’ poll.
  • The game is the second of 3 consecutive vs. Top 15 opponents, which continues Wednesday at home vs. No. 15/13 Baylor. It marks the first time since Feb. 13-21, 2012 that the Wildcats have played 3 straight Top 15 foes.
  • K-State is 10-2 at Bramlage Coliseum this season (11-2 at home overall) with its only losses coming to No. 19/17 West Virginia and No. 17/18 Iowa State. Overall, the team is 32-51 (.386) against ranked teams in the arena’s history with 29 coming vs. ranked Big 12 foes and a 17-11 mark since 2008.
  • Eight of K-State’s 9 losses this season have come to Top 25 opponents, including 6 in Big 12 play. This includes 2 double-overtime setbacks to No. 19/17 West Virginia (83-87) at home and at No. 13/15 Baylor (72-79) as well as Wednesday’s 77-59 defeat at 7/6 Kansas. All 9 losses have come to teams with a combined record of 138-32 (.812).
  • K-State boasts the nation’s No. 19 strength of schedule, which should improve with 6 games remaining vs. teams with an RPI of 43 or better.
  • The schools will play for the 203rd time with the Sooners holding a 106-96 advantage. The Wildcats have won 5 of the last 7 meetings, including a sweep in 2015, since the Sooners last swept the season series in 2012.
  • K-State has 6 players with at least 8 double-digit scoring games, as the team is 8-2 this season when 4 or more players register double figures.
  • Freshmen have led the Wildcats in scoring 12 times (including 6 of 9 Big 12 games) with a combined 28 double-figure scoring games. They have also paced the team in rebounding and assists 8 times each.

Big 12 at the Midway Point

little basketballsThe Big 12 has the nation’s No. 1 team and half of the league is in the top 15 of the AP poll.

For the third season in a row, the conference has the best cumulative RPI. And in a “break” from league play last weekend, the Big 12 won seven of 10 games against the Southeastern Conference in an event that used to be played in December.

Now comes the second half of their brutal round-robin conference schedule, with each of the 10 teams exactly halfway through their 18 Big 12 games.

Oklahoma and No. 14 West Virginia are tied for the Big 12 lead, a game ahead of 11-time defending Big 12 champ and No. 7 Kansas, No. 15 Baylor and Texas.
