Royals Adding Netting to Kaufman Stadium to Improve Safety

small kcrKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals are installing additional netting at Kauffman Stadium that extends toward the outfield end of each team’s dugout to improve the safety for fans sitting along the foul lines.

Several clubs have considered ways to protect fans from foul balls hit into those seats, and some have suggested that similar netting should be mandatory in major league ballparks.

Royals vice president Kevin Uhlich said Wednesday that the club considered several options before deciding on the new netting. The club hopes it strikes a balance between safety and allowing fans sitting in premium seats to have the same kind of ballpark experience as in years past.

The World Series champion Royals play their home opener against the New York Mets on April 4.

JCHS Basketball Teams Lose at Seaman

small blue jayThe games were close but in the end Topeka Seaman came away with a sweep over Junction City in boys and girls basketball Tuesday night at Seaman.

In the boys contest Junction City ( 7-10 ) rallied from an 11 point first half deficit and led by one after three quarters. But missed shots inside the paint early in the fourth quarter helped turn the tide in favor of the Vikings ( 13-5 ) as they rolled to a 64-55 victory over the Blue Jays.

Junction City coach Pat Battle said the only word he had for the loss was “disappointment.”

“Very disappointed when we needed to. We had some big big misses and they had some big big makes. They’re a really good team.”

TJ Poole had 19 and Ricardo Erans 16 points for the Blue Jays.

In the girls game Seaman ( 4-13 ) rallied from a 38-37 deficit to score the final four points of the game enroute to a 41-38 victory over Junction City ( 2-15 ).

Lady Jay coach Derek Petty said, “We didn’t finish the game very well. We got what we wanted. We got them to come out of the zone and they were chasing us around, and we ended up taking a bad shot. “That occurred with Junction City holding onto a one point lead in the closing minutes.

Kealee Rains and Briona Jensen had eight points apiece for the Lady Jays.

Junction City teams host Emporia Friday night.

Duke, which had one of the longest consecutive poll streaks ever, returns at No. 20 after two weeks out of the Top 25.

Villanova (22-3) received 44 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel on Monday with Kansas (21-4) getting the other 21.

Oklahoma, which lost to Kansas in their rematch, and Iowa stayed third and fourth. North Carolina jumped four places to fifth and was followed by Maryland, which had been No. 2, and Virginia. Michigan State and Xavier are tied for eighth and West Virginia, which also lost to Kansas, is 10th.

KU Prevails at Oklahoma

jayhawkNORMAN, Okla. – The Rematch was touted as “must-see -TV” and the reason “why you play the game” from ESPN’s College GameDay crew hours before Kansas and Oklahoma met for the first time since an epic triple-overtime KU victory on Jan. 4 in Allen Fieldhouse.

Part two of the hotly-contested series between the teams vying for a Big 12 regular-season title lived up to its billing again as the sixth-ranked Jayhawks prevailed against the third-ranked Sooners on Saturday afternoon at Lloyd Noble Center, 76-72.

With the win, Kansas (21-4, 9-3 Big 12) snaps Oklahoma’s 19-game home winning streak and moves into a tie with West Virginia for the lead in the Big 12 standings. The Sooners fall to 20-4 and 8-4 in Big 12 play. Kansas is now 3-0 against top-10 opponents this season, including two-straight top-10 wins after defeating the 10th-ranked Mountaineers on Tuesday in Lawrence.

Sophomore guard Devonte’ Graham carried the Jayhawks with a career-high 27 points, including 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, in 39 minutes of action while primarily guarding Oklahoma standout Buddy Hield.

K-State Falls in Overtime

wildcat twoSTILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Tavarius Shine came off the bench to score 11 points, five in overtime, to lead Oklahoma State to an 58-55 victory over Kansas State on Saturday.

Leyton Hammonds led the Cowboys (12-13, 3-9 Big 12) with 13 points, while adding six rebounds, as his team snapped a three-game losing streak. Oklahoma State had lost nine of its previous 11, with five of those defeats decided by five points or fewer.

Justin Edwards scored 14 points and posted 13 rebounds to lead Kansas State (14-11, 3-9).

Oklahoma State nearly won it at the end of regulation, as it appeared that Jeff Newberry hit a 3-pointer from half court just as the buzzer sounded. The officials called it good, but a video review showed that Newberry released the ball a split second after the clock expired, overturning the verdict.

Kansas State missed four shots in the final 15 seconds of overtime.
