Junction City Qualifies Six Wrestlers for 2016 6A State Tournament

Junction City High School will be sending six wrestlers to the Class 6A State Championship at Hartman Arena in Park City.

The Blue Jays competed Saturday in the Class 6A Regional hosted by Wichita North High School. At 160 WRESTLING REGIONALS 2016pounds Aryus Jones came away with a regional championship for the Blue Jays. After suffering a serious leg injury during football season Jones was kept out of the first part of the season, but since returning Jones has gone a perfect 14-0 on his way to the state tournament.

“Aryus is still getting to be himself, he’s still not totally there,” said Bob Laster, Blue Jay Head Coach. “I’m hoping with another week, that when he gets to state he’ll feel a little bit better. Today he was moving a little bit slow, just due to the post injury that he recovered from.”

Junction City’s other regional champ was Jefferey Walters at 220 pounds.

“It was a great surprise, I knew Jeff had it in him, basically we were just waiting to see when we could pull it out of him.”

Walters was the Blue Jays’ heavy weight wrestler last year, and cut weight this year to wrestle at 220 pounds.

Other state qualifiers include Kade Danielson at 106 pounds with a 4th place finish, Max Bazan at 113 pounds with a 3rd place finish, John Clark at 145 pounds with a 2nd place finish, and Kamari Smith at 152 pounds with a 2nd place finish.

Blue Jays Outlast Emporia in Double Overtime

small blue jayThe Junction City Blue Jays ( 8-10 ) used as stingy zone defense to hold off the Emporia Spartans ( 6-12 ) 51-44 in double overtime Friday night at the Shenk Gym.

Junction City overcame cold shooting during the game and problems at the free throw line in the latter part of the fourth quarter and the overtimes to get the win, outscoring the Spartans 11-4 in the final overtime.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle said his team was not very good on offense. “Not that we couldn’t run things, we just didn’t hit shots. We were just ice cold, and it stayed that way with a few stretches and a few key big shots .”

Battle said the key to the win was the play  by Junction City on defense. “I think we really flustered them with the zone. Our kids worked very very hard, they were very active, and we got some big rebounds there in the second overtime.”

TJ Poole led the Blue Jays with 14 points in the contest.

In the girls game Emporia ( 13-5 ) rolled to a 62-42 win over Junction City ( 2-16 ).

Lady Jay coach Derek Petty said Emporia was a tough team. “They execute what they do very well. They take smart shots and protect the ball.”

A’kia Fain led Junction City with 11 points.

It was senior night at JCHS.

Royals Extend Contracts of General Manager and Manager

small kcrKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals have signed general manager Dayton Moore and manager Ned Yost to contract extensions, ensuring the leadership of the World Series champions will remain intact.

Yost was also entering the final year of his contract. He had floated the possibility of retiring at some point in the near future but said Thursday at the club’s spring training home in Arizona “it’s hard to leave when you still have the ability to win.”

Terms of Moore’s contract were not disclosed. The general manager since 2006, Moore had signed an extension in November 2013 that would have expired after this year. The Royals have been to back-to-back World Series, beating the Mets last year for their first championship since 1985 .
