East Defeats West in Shrine Bowl — Former Blue Jays Play Well

shrine twoThe East capitalized on West team turnovers to win the Shrine Bowl football game in Emporia Saturday night 48-27.

The head coach of the West squad, Randall Zimmerman of Junction City, said it came down to turnovers. “We turned the football over, I think they had two defensive touchdowns.”A third touchdown came off a drive that began after a West turnover.

The East jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter but the West rallied in the first half to lead for a time in the second quarter 20-19.  In the fourth quarter the West trailed 40-27 but appeared to have held on a third-and-12 play deep in East territory before a penalty was called on the West. After that the East team put together a long drive that ended in the final touchdown of the game.

Mike McCoy, formerly of Topeka High, had a huge game. He scored four touchdowns and was named the MVP of the East team. Ian Rudzik of Ulysses, was the West MVP.

Two former Junction City Blue Jays turned in solid performances for the West team. Raye Wilson ran for one touchdown and caught another pass and ran for a second touchdown.  Christien Ozores had nine tackles and intercepted a pass from his safety position.

The Shrine Bowl matches the top high school senior football players from the previous season in the annual contest. The event also raises funds to support Shriner’s Childrens Hospitals.

Davis Returns to Kansas City for MRI

kcr fiveARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Kansas City Royals closer Wade Davis headed back to Kansas City on Saturday night for an MRI on his right arm.

Davis spent time on the 15-day disabled list earlier this month with a strain in his forearm.

In his last appearance Wednesday, Wade allowed four of the first five Los Angeles Angels hitters he faced to reach. He issued three walks for the first time as a reliever and threw his first bases-loaded walk since Sept. 7, 2013.

Davis has a 1.60 ERA with 21 saves in 23 chances in 35 appearances this season. His last save was July 22 against Texas.

Rangers Defeat the Royals

kcrARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Mitch Moreland hit a game-ending homer with two outs in the ninth inning and the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Saturday night.

Moreland’s 17th homer landed in the second deck of seats in right field.

Brooks Pounders (1-1) had gotten the first two outs in the ninth before Moreland homered for the fourth time in five games. He had two homers Thursday night when Texas won 3-2 in the series opener against the Royals.

Matt Bush (4-2) pitched two scoreless innings, with one strikeout.

Both starting pitchers, Royals right-hander Ian Kennedy and Rangers lefty Martin Perez, allowed one run over seven innings.

Lorenzo Cain Reinstated from DL

kcr fourARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Kansas City Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain has been reinstated from the disabled list after missing a month with a left hamstring strain.

With Cain rejoining the Royals before their game Friday night in Texas, rookie outfielder Brett Eibner was optioned to Triple-A Omaha.

Cain hit .290 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs in 73 games before missing 25 games. He had been on the disabled list since injuring his hamstring while trying to beat out a single in a June 28 game against St. Louis.

In a two games for Omaha on a rehab assignment, Cain went 3 for 8.

Eibner has hit .231 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 26 games over three stints with the Royals this season.

MLB Denies Angels’ Protest

kcrNEW YORK (AP) – Major League Baseball had denied the Los Angeles Angels’ formal protest filled during their loss at Kansas City on Wednesday night.

Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre ruled on the protest Thursday.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia protested Kansas City’s 7-5 victory, claiming the Royals’ Raul Mondesi ran inside the line on a bunt single in the seventh inning that led to a throwing error and two runners scoring.

Scioscia said at the time that he was “100 percent” certain the protest would be upheld.

“It’s not a judgment call,” Scioscia said. “I would not have protested if I was not 100 percent correct on this. This is a misinterpretation of a rule. It was very clear. Phil Cuzzi, the home plate umpire, had Mondesi running inside the line in jeopardy the whole way, and stated that it’s okay because he was stepping back toward the bag, which is wrong.

Hochevar Placed on DL

kcr fiveARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Kansas City Royals reliever Luke Hochevar has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The Royals made the move before Thursday night’s game at Texas, and said the right-hander has symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome. That is a condition when blood vessels or nerves between the collarbone and first rib become compressed, and can cause pain in the shoulder and neck.

Kansas City recalled right-hander Brooks Pounders from Triple-A Omaha.

The DL move was retroactive to Monday, the day after Hochevar took the loss in a 2-1 home defeat to the Rangers. He gave up a tiebreaking homer to the first batter he faced, Delino DeShields leading off the seventh.

Hochevar is 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 40 appearances this season.

Royals Rally for Win

small kcrKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Raul Mondesi had a bunt single for his first big league hit, with two runs scoring on the play on pitcher Matt Shoemaker’s throwing error, as the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 7-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night.

Shoemaker, who did not allow a base runner until the fifth inning, yielded singles to Alex Gordon and Paulo Orlando to start the seventh. Mondesi, who was called up Tuesday, put down a bunt and beat the throw to first as the throw by Shoemaker (5-11) sailed into right field.

Both runners scored and Mondesi wound up on third.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia came out claiming interference, and after a 6 minute, 15 second review the call on the field was not changed. Scioscia officially protested the game.

Mondesi added a RBI-infield single in a two-run eighth. The second run scored on pitcher Jose Alvarerz’s throwing error.

Joakim Soria (4-4) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Charles on Physically Unable to Perform List

chiefs logoST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs placed running back Jamaal Charles on the physically unable to perform list Wednesday, though coach Andy Reid said it should not be considered a setback in his return from a knee injury.

Charles tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 5 last season. He had surgery soon afterward and was far enough along in his recovery that he participated in some drills during mandatory minicamp.

The Chiefs can take Charles off the PUP list whenever he is medically cleared, but that likely will not happen soon. Veterans do not report for the start of training camp until Friday, and even then Reid said he plans to take it slowly with his star running back.
