Upton Powers Tigers to Win Over Kansas City

kcr fiveKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Justin Upton hit a two-run homer with two out in the eighth inning, sending the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Upton also doubled in J.D. Martinez in the second. He has seven homers and 18 RBIs in his past 14 games.

Miguel Cabrera was on first after a leadoff single when Upton drove a fastball from Joakim Soria over the wall in center for his 20th homer, giving Detroit a 6-5 lead. Soria (4-7) blew his fourth save in five opportunities.

Shane Greene (3-3) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win. Francisco Rodriguez worked the ninth for his 38th save in 42 opportunities.

Jayhawks Give Coach Beaty First Win

jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Montell Cozart threw three touchdown passes, Ryan Willis tossed two more and Kansas gave second-year coach David Beaty his first victory by routing overmatched Rhode Island 55-6 on Saturday night.

Third-string quarterback Carter Stanley also threw a TD pass, LaQuvionte Gonzalez caught seven passes for 78 yards and a touchdown, and Taylor Martin and Ke’aun Kinner ran for scores as the Jayhawks (1-0) won for the first time since beating Iowa State on Nov. 8, 2014, a span of 665 days.

They went 0-12 for the first time in school history last season.

The Rams (0-1) were held to 219 yards of offense by a Kansas defense that gave up at least 40 points eight times last season. Wes McKoy was 6 of 29 for 43 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Rhode Island has never beaten a school from the Football Bowl Subdivision in 14 tries.

Beaty has been slowing trying to rebuild the downtrodden Jayhawks, and there was little evidence of progress last season. But an infusion of touted freshmen and high-profile transfers – Gonzalez came from Texas A&M, for example – gave a sparse season-opening crowd reason to be optimistic.

Kansas scored its most points since routing Nebraska 76-39 on Nov. 3, 2007, when Mark Mangino was still roaming the sideline. The Jayhawks are on their fourth head coach since then.

The big question surrounding them Saturday night was who would be under center.

Cozart was the starter before a season-ending injury a year ago, and Willis took over the rest of the way. The two battled until the final week of training camp and Cozart won the right to take the first snaps of the game, though both played a significant amount of time.

Cozart wound up going 18 of 25 for 199 yards, while Willis was 7 of 9 for 144 yards.

Still, there were times they looked like the same old Jayhawks.

Late in the first half, Kansas failed to convert third down, got called for illegal substitution and missed a field-goal attempt. Cozart threw a pick in the end zone midway through the third quarter, while Derrick Neal botched a punt return midway through the fourth quarter.

But for the most part, it was easy to look good against the Rams.

The Football Championship Subdivision bottom-dweller also muffed a punt that led to the Jayhawks’ first touchdown, then had their only extra-point attempt blocked in the second quarter.

THE TAKEAWAY

Rhode Island: The Rams’ chances were ruined in part by three turnovers, including a pair of fumbles that were recovered by the Jayhawks. Both of them turned into eventual touchdowns.

Kansas: Gonzalez has star potential. The speedy wide receiver had to sit out last season under NCAA transfer rules, so he was playing in his first game since Dec. 29, 2014.

Royals Top Tigers 5-2

kcrKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Eric Hosmer hit his career-high 20th homer, Yordano Ventura pitched into and out of trouble, and the Kansas City Royals snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night.

Hosmer homered in the fourth after Cheslor Cuthbert led off the inning with a double. Hosmer’s previous high was 19 as a rookie in 2011.

Ventura threw 53 strikes and 52 balls in six innings, allowing one run and six hits with six walks and a wild pitch. The Tigers went 1 for 9 with runners on base, stranding nine, while he was on the mound and had a base runner every inning.

Ventura (10-9) improved to 7-0 against the Tigers, including three wins this season, and is 4-0 overall in his past six starts

Michael Fulmer (10-6) gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings for the Tigers, falling to 1-4 in his past five starts. He walked one and struck out four.

Chiefs Cuts

chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have cut quarterbacks Aaron Murray and rookie Kevin Hogan, meaning Tyler Bray will be the backup to Alex Smith and Nick Foles for the regular-season opener against San Diego.

The Chiefs announced a series of roster moves Saturday to reach the NFL’s limit of 53 players, though they actually have 54 on the active roster. They have an exemption for franchise safety Eric Berry, who did not report to camp until last weekend, that does not expire until next weekend.

Along with a series of cuts, the Chiefs traded cornerback Marcus Cooper to Arizona and wide receiver Rod Streater to San Francisco for undisclosed draft picks.

They wound up keeping fringe running back Knile Davis and wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas.

Tigers Edge Royals

small kcrKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Miguel Cabrera homered among his three hits and drove in four runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 7-6 Friday night. Francisco Rodriguez picked up the victory, despite blowing a save in the eighth when Paulo Orlando hit a two-run single to give the Royals a 6-5 lead World Series champion Kansas City has three consecutive one-run losses after winning 18 of its previous 22 games.

Blue Jays Roll in Football Opener

Blue Jay Football Coach Randall Zimmerman

The Junction City Blue Jay football team took advantage of eight turnovers by the Emporia Spartans to roll to a 47-0 victory over the Spartans at Jack Welch Stadium in Emporia.

Blue Jay quarterback Ryan Henington threw four touchdown passes, and completed 15-20 passes for 223 yards in the win. Jovan Baldwin, Rooster Adams and Joe Vallery each rushed for one touchdown.

Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman credited hard play by the team and good work on special teams. On offense he said he knew Junction City put a lot of points on the scoreboard, but he also expressed some concern. “I was very concerned at the pace in which we played. We were not playing fast. Some of our fast kids…kids that can really run were not playing as fast as they’re capable of playing.” The coach added the Blue Jays need to shore that up.

Zimmerman noted the Blue Jays were also playing outside their scheme on offense….something he found puzzling. “We get that taken care of, this group’s going to be a good group.”

The Blue Jay defense surrendered no points.

Junction City hosts Topeka High next Friday at Al Simpler Stadium. The Trojans opened their season with a 30-13 win over Hayden.

McCaffrey’s Two TD’s Lead Stanford Past Kansas State

k-state footballSTANFORD, Calif. (AP) – Christian McCaffrey had two long touchdown runs and Ryan Burns threw a scoring pass in his first career start to lead No. 8 Stanford to a 26-13 victory over Kansas State on Friday night.

With the Wildcats focused on stopping McCaffrey after he set the major college football record for all-purpose yards and finished second last year in Heisman Trophy voting, Stanford turned to its new quarterback to lead the offense early in the opener for both teams.

Burns completed his first 10 passes, including a 40-yard touchdown strike to Michael Rector on the opening play of the second quarter.

McCaffrey then got into the act with an electrifying 35-yard touchdown run. He froze safety Kendall Adams with a juke and raced to the end zone for the score.

McCaffrey shattered Barry Sanders’ 27-year-old record by gaining 3,496 all-purpose yards last season when he finished second to Alabama’s Derrick Henry in the Heisman.

But Stanford’s offense stalled in the second half before McCaffrey iced the game with a late 41-yard TD run. He finished 126 yards on 22 carries and 210 all-purpose yards.

THE TAKEAWAY

Kansas State: The Wildcats’ inexperienced offensive line featuring two freshmen struggled. Stanford had eight sacks, including one in the end zone by Jordan Watkins for a safety. Jesse Ertz was briefly knocked out of the game in the second half after one hit. He recovered to throw a late TD pass to Isaiah Zuber.

Stanford: After converting his first five third-down passes into first downs, Burns struggled. The Cardinal gained just 30 yards in the second half before McCaffrey’s second TD run. The defense was up to the task to make the lead hold but could have more trouble doing that once the Pac-12 schedule starts.

UP NEXT

Kansas State: The Wildcats play Florida Atlanta in their home opener Sept. 17.

Stanford: The Cardinal are off before beginning conference play at home against No. 20 USC.

Lady Jay Volleyball 2-1 in Home Opener

The Lady Jay volleyball team opened their season with a home tournament, just missing finishing on top.10

After successfully shutting down Highland Park and Topeka West, the Lady Jays saw their toughest competition of the night in Topeka Hayden, who would hand them their first loss.

Head Coach Gennifer Booth said she’s pleased with how the girls played.

“I thought we did very well, the girls played up to their capabilities,” said Booth while noting their most visisble weakness. “One of the things that I told the girls [that we need to work on] is that transition speed, we’ve got to get faster, we’re doing ladders everyday, all of them are in athletic strength and conditioning – they’ve just got to get faster footwork.”

Booth added that at times the girls don’t realize the talents they do have, and they need to work on that confidence.

“Half the time the girls are so amazed at something that they do [that] they watch, and they have to realize that it’s still active play and they’ve got to be good participants,” said Booth.

Hopefully the girls get over the shock and awe as they head further in to the season, but Booth says that they are taking things a week at a time.

“We need to set small goals, small goals will get us to where we need to be…they’ve set a goal of where want to be at in two weeks, where we want to be at 3 weeks and where we want to be at 4 weeks,” said Booth.

Though the team faired well in their only home meet of the season, Booth was tough but optimistic.

“We were pretty competitive tonight, but I’d like to be a little more competitive in the long run, because we had a good finishing last year, but I’d like a higher finishing, so hopefully that will come out to play as the season progresses,” said Booth.

The Lady Jays compete the rest of the season on the road, with competition at Highland Park High school on Tuesday, September 6th.
