football-schedule
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Highlighted by a shift of the September 23 game with Charlotte to September 9, K-State’s 2017 football schedule is now complete with the Wildcats hosting seven games at Bill Snyder Family Stadium beginning September 2.

In all, the Wildcats will face six teams that appeared in bowl games this past season, four of which will travel to Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

“We appreciate the patience of the Wildcat Nation and the help of the Charlotte administration as we worked to adjust our open date and complete the 2017 schedule,” Athletics Director John Currie said. “K-State Nation will be in full force next week in Houston for the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl, but it is never too early to begin planning for next season as we host seven contests at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and look to extend our sellout streak to 40 straight games.”

Following the ninth-annual K-State Family Reunion against Central Arkansas on September 2, the Cats will host Charlotte the following week on September 9 in a game that was originally slated for September 23. The Big 12 portion of the schedule, released last week, begins with the Bears in Manhattan followed by a road game at Texas (Oct. 7) and consecutive home games with TCU (Oct. 14) and Oklahoma (Oct. 21). The Dillons Sunflower Showdown will follow on Oct. 28, in Lawrence, with the Cats traveling to Texas Tech the following weekend (Nov. 4). Two of the final three games will be played in Manhattan as the Cats host West Virginia onNov. 11 and Iowa State to close out the regular season on Nov. 25, while a Nov. 18 trip to Oklahoma State is sandwiched between the two.

Jerry Kill Named Offensive Coordinator at Rutgers

jerry-killMANHATTAN, Kan. –
Jerry Kill, who has spent the past year as Associate Athletics Director for Administration working with the Wildcat football program, will return to the sidelines as a full-time coach as he has been named offensive coordinator at Rutgers, the school announced today.

“K-State came at a perfect time for me, and I am forever grateful to John Currie and Coach Bill Snyder for providing this wonderful opportunity for Rebecca and me,” Kill said. “I have met so many terrific people and learned so much during my time here, both on the administrative side and the football side working alongside an icon in Coach Snyder. My passion is to coach football and impact the lives of young people every day, and my experience at K-State will no doubt make me a better and more well-rounded football coach and person.”

“We were blessed to have Jerry and Rebecca here in the K-State and Manhattan communities this past year,” Athletics Director John Currie said. “Even though his tenure proved to be short, his impact as a vital member of our senior athletics staff was significant from the day he arrived and his efforts to make our department and students better will continue to pay dividends for K-State. We understand his passion and desire for coaching, and the opportunity to get back on the field and coordinate an offense and work with Coach Ash was one he felt he could not pass up. We will always consider Coach and Rebecca to be members of the extended K-State Family and wish them all the best at Rutgers.”

A three-time national coach of the year honoree, Kill spent the past year as a senior departmental staff member and chief administrator for the K-State football program. Deputy Athletics Director and former K-State linebacker Laird Veatch will take over sport administrative duties vacated by Kill, Currie said.

“We are happy for Jerry and his wife Rebecca,” said head coach Bill Snyder. “Sean and I have developed a very close relationship with them over the past several months and enjoyed our time together. Jerry enjoyed being a part of our football program and we enjoyed our time with him. He is a hard worker who cares about young people and will have a very positive impact on their lives at Rutgers.”

Kill recorded winning seasons in 15 of his 22 years as a college head coach. He most recently coached at Minnesota, from 2011-2015, where he took the Gophers to heights not seen in recent years. In year four, Kill led Minnesota to a January 1 bowl game for the first time since 1962 and coached the Gophers to wins against Michigan and Iowa, which had previously not happened in the same season since 1967. Under Kill’s direction, Minnesota also won eight games in both 2013 and 2014, which marked only the fifth time since 1906 that Minnesota won eight games in consecutive seasons.

In his previous four stops as a head coach, he never left a school with a sub-.500 record, and in three of his previous four head coaching positions, he took over a team with a losing record and turned in a winning season in three years or less.

Prior to his stint at Minnesota, Kill led Northern Illinois to 23 wins and three consecutive bowl games during his tenure and also coached NIU to a berth the Mid-American Conference Championship game in 2010.

Prior to serving as the head coach at NIU, Kill was in charge of the football program at Southern Illinois, an FCS program in Carbondale, Ill. He spent seven years on the Saluki sideline and compiled a 55-32 record. Kill’s record over his final five seasons with Southern Illinois was 50-14 and included five consecutive NCAA FCS Playoff appearances.

Kill was the head coach at Emporia (Kan.) State for two seasons in 1999-2000. He went 11-11 with the Hornets, who play at the NCAA Division II level. Prior to Emporia State, Kill was the head coach at NCAA Division II member Saginaw Valley State from 1994-1998. He compiled a 38-14 record with the Cardinals.

Chiefs Fall on Last Second Field Goal

chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ryan Succop kicked a 53-yard field goal into the wind as time expired Sunday to give the Tennessee Titans a 19-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on a frigid afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium.

Succop, who spent the first part of his career with Kansas City, came up short on his first try at the winner, but Chiefs coach Andy Reid had called a timeout just before the snap. Given a second chance, Succop knocked it through with a couple feet to spare as the Titans poured off the bench to celebrate.

The Titans’ rallied from a 17-7 hole, and Derrick Henry’s second touchdown got Tennessee (8-6) within 17-16 with just over three minutes left. But Titans coach Mike Mularkey went for the 2-point conversion and the lead. Marcus Mariota was pressured immediately and his pass never reached the end zone.

Jackson Leads Kansas Past Davidson

jayhawkKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Josh Jackson and Frank Mason III scored 18 points apiece, helping third-ranked Kansas overcome a sluggish, sloppy first half to beat Davidson 89-71 on Saturday night at Sprint Center.

Svi Mykhailiuk also had 13 points for the Jayhawks (10-1), who extended their nation-leading home winning streak to 49 games. Kansas considered the matchup with the Wildcats (5-4) a home game even though it was played just down the road from its campus in Lawrence.

It was the Jayhawks‘ eighth straight win in the building, including the Big 12 Tournament last season and the CBE Classic a few weeks ago. It’s also the same building where they will not only contest the league tournament in March but hope to land in the NCAA Tournament with a spot in the Final Four on the line.

Peyton Aldridge hit five 3s and had 22 points to lead the Wildcats, while Jack Gibbs — the nation’s fourth-leading scorer coming into the game — had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Maurice Suspended; Williams to Transfer

little basketballsDENVER, Colo. – Head coach Bruce Weber announced today that redshirt freshman Isaiah Maurice has been indefinitely suspended while redshirt freshman Dante Williams has elected to transfer from the program.

Maurice has been suspended for violations of departmental policy, Weber said.

“Our players have expectations and there are consequences when you don’t live up to those expectations,” said Weber. “Hopefully, Isaiah will learn from this experience and make the necessary progress to rejoin our team.”

A 6-foot-10, 225-pound forward from Durham, N.C., Maurice had seen action in all 10 games this season, averaging 2.6 points and 2.5 rebounds in 10.2 minutes per game off the bench.

Williams completed final exams this week and informed Weber he was leaving the program.

“After discussions with his family, Dante has made the decision to transfer from Kansas State,” said Weber. “He feels like he needs to continue his college career elsewhere and we wish him the best as he moves forward.”

A 7-foot, 245-pound forward from Arlington, Texas, Williams had seen action in six games this season, averaging 1.5 points, 1.0 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 4.8 minutes per game. He redshirted his freshman season in 2015-16.

Manhattan Overpowers Junction City in Boys – Girls Basketball

blue jay logoManhattan used strong defense and took advantage of Junction City turnovers enroute to a pair of wins over the Junction City Blue Jays ( 2-3 )  and Lady Jays ( 1-4 ) in basketball Friday night.

In the boys contest, the Indians ( 3-1 ) prevailed 57-30. Tommy Ekart and Trevor Hudgins produced multiple steals that were converted into points by the Indians on the offensive end as they jumped out to a 20-6 lead after one quarter. The Indians never trailed after that point in the game.

Blue Jay coach Nate Schmitt credited Manhattan. “They’re a very good basketball team, and very well coached. ” On Ekart and Hudgins, Schmitt noted that they’re good basketball players.  Schmitt added it makes it difficult when you continue to turn the ball over on the offensive end. “Our turnovers weren’t just turnovers, they were turnovers for runouts on the other end for layups.”

The next game for the Blue Jays will be January third when they host Topeka West.

In the girls game Manhattan dominated from start to finish, taking advantage of  Junction City turnovers.

Manhattan led 17-4 after one quarter as they improved to 4-0 on the season. Junction City fell to 1-4.

Lady Jay coach Derek Petty said his team had 26 turnovers but only caused 13. “We didn’t execute as well as we should have. I’ll give some credit to them on that, but we’ve just got to execute what we do and not turn the ball over so much, make better passes and better decisions.”

Ally McGuire led Junction City with 10 points.

The Lady Jays host Topeka West on January third.
