Seaman Basketball Teams Defeat Junction City

small-blue-jayLed by 25 points from Tanyon Schafer the Seaman Vikings rolled to a 61-44 victory over the Junction City Blue Jays Friday night at the Shenk Gym.

The Vikings’ post player scored inside and outside including a pair of 3-point shots to help Seaman improve to 5-1, while the Blue Jays fell to 2-5.

Junction City coach Nate Schmitt noted the performance by Schafer was expected. “That kid’s been playing since he was a freshman. He’s very confident at this level, and he’s doing a good job. The only frustrating thing is we predicted every single move he was going to make, and we tried to make the adjustment at halftime. Sometimes, 16-17 year old kids it doesn’t register the first time, so I was a little disappointed in the way we defended him in the second half, but overall he’s a good player and he did a good job tonight.”

The Blue jays were led by A.J. Dickerson with 13 points while A.J. Range had 12 points.

In the girls varsity basketball game at the Shenk Gym Seaman defeated Junction City 57-43. Seaman opened up a six point lead at halftime and then outscored the Lady Jays 13-8 in the third quarter, and gradually pulled away.

Katera Mayfield had 15 and Megan Sumner 13 points for Seaman, with Sumner hitting four 3-point shots.

Junction City  ( 2-5 ) got 11 points from Brianna Jensen and 10 from Ally McGuire.

GAME 15 – QUICK HITTERS

  • Kansas State (12-2, 1-1 Big 12) returns to the friendly confines of home on Saturday, as the Wildcats welcome home one of their greatest all-time players and coaches – Lon Kruger – with a match-up against his Oklahoma Sooners (6-7, 0-2 Big 12) at Bramlage Coliseum at 2 p.m. CT on ESPNews.
  • Kruger was both a player and coach at K-State, earning Big Eight Player of the Year honors (1973 & 1974) during his playing career for legendary coach Jack Hartman from 1971-74 before serving as an assistant coach to Hartman from 1977-82 and head coach from 1986-90.
  • K-State is looking to rebound from just its second loss, as No. 3/2 Kansas held off a late Wildcat rally with a jumper at the buzzer, 90-88, to end a 7-game winning streak. Despite the loss, the 12-2 start ties for the best start under head coach Bruce Weber with the 2012-13 squad.
  • The Wildcats had many positives in the setback, as it was the closest match-up with the Jayhawks at Allen Fieldhouse since its last win in 2006 while they scored the second-most points (88) in the building in the series and the most since a 91-72 victory in Feb. 7, 1962.
  • Sophomore Dean Wade, the Big 12’s leading scorer (19.0 ppg.) in league games, once again led the Wildcats with a career-tying 20 points at Kansas, as all 5 starters registered double figures for the fourth time under head coach Bruce Weber, including the second time this season.
  • K-State is the only Big 12 team to have all 5 starters averaging in double figures and the lone school with 5 double-digit scorers. In all, the Wildcats have had 6 different leading scorers with those 6 players tallying at least 7 double-figure scoring games led by sophomore Barry Brown’s 11.
  • K-State has won 10 straight at home venues (including 9 in a row at Bramlage Coliseum) dating back to last season with the last loss coming to Texas, 71-70, on Feb. 22, 2016. The Wildcats went unbeaten at home (8-0) in non-conference play for the second consecutive season.
  • K-State has won its 9 home games by an average of 16.8 points per game, while averaging 74.3 points on 48.1 percent shooting and holding opponents to just 57.6 points on 37.4 percent shooting. Sophomore Barry Brown (12.9 ppg.) is one of 4 players averaging in double figures at home.
  • Oklahoma is one of three Big 12 schools to lead the all-time series with K-State, as the Sooners are 106-97 in a rivalry that dates back to 1920. However, the Wildcats have won 10 of the last 15 meetings, including 6 of 10 match-ups with former player and coach Lon Kruger.

THE OPPONENT: OKLAHOMA (6-7, 0-2 Big 12)

  • Oklahoma enters Saturday’s game with a 6-7 record after dropping a 60-57 decision at TCU on Tuesdaynight… The Sooners have lost 5 in a row since starting the season and have lost both true road games (at Wisconsin and at TCU).
  • The Sooners are averaging 76 points on 43.6 percent shooting, including 39 percent from 3-point range, on the season with 38.1 rebounds, 13.2 assists, 8.2 steals and 5.1 blocks per game… They are allowing opponent 72.2 points per game on 42.1 percent shooting, including 36.2 percent from beyond the arc… The team is shooting 69.3 percent from the free throw line.
  • Oklahoma has 2 players averaging in double figures led by senior guard Jordan Woodard, who has missed the last 3 games due to injury… Woodard is averaging a team-best 17.6 points on 43.2 percent shooting and has a team-best 26 3-pointers… Sophomore guard Christian James is averaging 11.5 points on 42.1 percent shooting and has 24 3-point field goals on 48 percent shooting… Fellow sophomore Rashard Odomes is averaging 9.3 points on 45.4 percent shooting, while junior forward Khadeem Lattin is averaging 8.8 points on 51.9 percent shooting to go with a team-hgh 5.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.
  • Oklahoma is led by 6th-year head coach Lon Kruger, who has a 117-64 record in his tenure… He has a 596-368 record in his 30th season as a head coach, which includes stints at Pan American (1982-86), Kansas State (1986-90), Florida (1991-96), Illinois (1996-2000), UNLV (2004-11) and now Oklahoma… He is the only coach to take 5 different teams to the NCAA Tournament.

BREAKING DOWN THE SERIES

  • This will be the 204th meeting between the two schools with Oklahoma leading the series, 106-97… The schools have met at least once every season since 1927, while the series dates to 1920… It is the 5th-most played rivalry in school history.
  • Oklahoma is 1 of only 3 Big 12 schools (Kansas and West Virginia) to hold a series advantage over K-State.
  • Oklahoma holds a 15-12 record in the Big 12 era, including a 14-12 mark in the regular season.
  • K-State owns a 59-36 record at home against Oklahoma, including a 13-8 mark at Bramlage Coliseum.
  • K-State has won 10 of the last 15 meetings since dropping 8 in a row from 2000-06.

K-State Kicks Off 2017 at Bill Easton Classic

track-and-fieldMANHATTAN, Kan. – After opening the indoor season with two home meets in early December, the Kansas State track and field team opens the 2017 portion of its indoor schedule as it makes the quick trip down I-70 to compete in the Bill Easton Classic hosted by the Kansas Jayhawks in Anschutz Sports Pavilion on Friday.

The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m., CT, with four different field events, while the track events are set to kick off at 3 p.m., CT, with the women’s 3000 meter run. Admission to the meet is free.

“This should be a good meet to get us back into a competitive mode,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said about Friday’s meet. “All the schools are coming off the Christmas break and most of the athletes are not very sharp right now. Having said that, I know that we will have a few athletes that will set personal bests and there will be some quality marks.”

This season marks the first time since the 2015 season that the Wildcats will compete at the Bill Easton Classic. At that meet, the Wildcats left Lawrence with 11 first-place finishes, four top-10 program marks and several personal bests.

K-State’s 2015 Bill Easton Classic was highlighted by sprinter A’Keyla Mitchell, who took first place in the 200 meter dash and broke the school record in the event. A freshman in 2015, Mitchell posted a time of 23.97, topping a then 25-year old school record held by former Wildcat Markeya Jones.

The Wildcats will also look to ride the momentum from the success it saw on December 10 as both the men and women swept the competition at the K-State Winter Invitational to close out 2016. K-State athletes combined for 17 first-place finishes in Ahearn Field House to seal the victory for the Wildcats.

For more information on the Wildcats’ first meet of 2017, including a full schedule and heat sheets, can found here. Live results for the meet will be provided by Black Squirrel Timing and can be found here.

Topeka West – Junction City Split Varsity Games

small-blue-jayThe Topeka West guard duo of Elijah Griffin and Koriyon Carr combined for 36 points and led the Chargers to a 68-63 boys basketball win over the Junction City Blue Jays at the Shenk Gym.

The Chargers took advantage of numerous Blue jay turnovers in the ballgame, which saw Junction City rally from a big early first quarter deficit to within one point twice in the second half. A.J. Range of Junction City had numerous scoring opportunities around the rim and was often fouled in the process. He wound up with 21 points to lead the Blue Jays, while teammate Lonnie Autry finished with 16 points.

The Blue Jays fell to 2-4 with the loss, while Topeka West improved to 2-3.

In the girls varsity game Junction City was a 47-30 winner over Topeka West.

The Lady Jays were led by Alana Kramer with 18 points, with 14 of those coming in the first half. Junction City improved to 2-4, while Topeka West fell to 3-2.

Jayhawks Edge Wildcats

little basketballsLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Svi Mykhailiuk went the length of the court and threw in a finger-tip layup as the buzzer sounded to give No. 3 Kansas a 90-88 victory over Kansas State on Tuesday night.

Josh Jackson matched a career high with 22 points to go with nine rebounds and six assists, and Landen Lucas added 18 points and 12 rebounds, as the Jayhawks (13-1, 2-0 Big 12) pushed their home winning streak to 50 in one of the closest games during that incredible streak.

The Wildcats (13-2, 1-1) had the first chance to take the lead in the final seconds, but Dean Wade missed a 3-pointer and the ball bounced out of bounds with 5.6 ticks left on the clock.

Kansas struggled to get the ball inbounds, but once it got into Mykhailiuk’s hands, he used his long stride to carry him down the court. His buzzer-beating basket gave him 11 points in the game, not to mention kept coach Bill Self from losing to Kansas State for the second time at Allen Fieldhouse.

Wade matched a career high with 20 points.

Blue Jay Basketball

small-blue-jayThe head coach for the Junction City Blue Jay boys basketball team, Nate Schmitt, has announced that he is buying t-shirts for the first 150 students who attend the game between Junction City and Topeka West Tuesday night at the Shenk Gym.

Schmitt also said Friday is Throwback Night, when the Blue Jays will be wearing old uniforms.  They are encouraging anyone that wants to participate and wear their old high school “stuff” do to so. The Blue Jays host Topeka Seaman Friday night,

Chiefs Clinch AFC West Championship

small chiefsSAN DIEGO (AP) — Alex Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and the Kansas City Chiefs clinched the AFC West title and a first-round playoff bye with a 37-27 victory Sunday against the Chargers in perhaps the final NFL game in San Diego.

The Chiefs (12-4) clinched the division with the win and Oakland’s loss at Denver.

San Diego fired coach Mike McCoy after the game.

Smith, who went to nearby Helix High in La Mesa, scored on a 5-yard scramble early in the second quarter to tie the game at 10 and then threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to wide-open Charcandrick West later in the quarter to put the Chiefs ahead for good at 17-10. That followed the first of two interceptions by Philip Rivers that led to 10 points for the Chiefs.

Smith was intercepted once, on a deflected pass that Jahleel Addae returned 90 yards for a touchdown to pull the Chargers (5-11) to 20-17 in the third quarter.

Smith came right back and threw a 2-yard scoring pass to West, who again was wide open.

Rookie Tyreek Hill showed some fancy footwork in returning a punt 95 yards for a touchdown in the final minute of the third quarter.
