Wildcats Fall by One at Texas Tech

PowerCatKeenan Evans made a go-ahead layup with 15 seconds left, helping Texas Tech beat No. 25 Kansas State 66-65 on Tuesday night.

Evans’ basket gave the Red Raiders a 63-62 lead. Aaron Ross and Niem Stevenson then combined for three foul shots for Texas Tech before Barry Brown made a 3-pointer in the final seconds for Kansas State.

Evans finished with 18 points. Zach Smith had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Red Raiders (13-3, 2-2 Big 12), who improved to 11-0 at home.

Kamau Stokes led Kansas State (13-3, 2-2) with 17 points. Dean Wade added 12 points, and D.J. Johnson finished with 11.

Kansas Defeats Oklahoma

jayhawkNORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Frank Mason scored 19 of his 28 points in the second half, and No. 2 Kansas rallied to beat Oklahoma 81-70 on Tuesday.

With No. 1 Baylor losing at West Virginia earlier in the night, the Jayhawks will be in position to claim the No. 1 ranking for the first time this season if they beat Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Josh Jackson scored 16 points and Devonte’ Graham added 13 for the Jayhawks (15-1, 4-0 Big 12), who have won 15 straight.

Rashard Odomes and Kameron McGusty each scored 13 points for the Sooners (6-9, 0-4), who lost their seventh in a row.

The Jayhawks opened the second half on a 13-0 run. A 3-pointer by Mason put Kansas up 56-47, and the Jayhawks maintained control from there.

Clemson Wins National Title

football clip artTAMPA, Fla. (AP) — As far as Clemson is concerned, the sequel was much better than the original.

The underdog Tigers upset defending national champion Alabama 35-31 as Clemson quarterback DeShaun Watson beat the Crimson Tide with his arm, his legs and his heart to win a rematch of last year’s title game. Alabama beat Clemson 45-40 last season in the championship.

Roughed up early by the Tide’s hard-hitting defense, Watson regained his composure to throw for 420 yards and three TDs. His final strike was a 2-yard score to Hunter Renfrow to cap a nerveless final drive with one second left. Watson also ran the ball 21 times for 43 yards and a touchdown. The lead changed hands four times in the fourth quarter of the seesaw affair.

After falling behind 14-0 early, Clemson scored 21 points in the fourth quarter against an Alabama defense that had allowed just 32 points in the fourth quarter all season. That ended Alabama’s 26-game winning streak and its dreams of back-to-back national titles.

Instead, Clemson won its first national title since 1981. The Tigers have their junior quarterback Watson to thank for his gutsy performance in what probably was his final college game before heading to the NFL draft.

K-State Earns First National Ranking Since 2014

25MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State registered a tie for 25th place in the latest Associated Press poll on Monday to earn its first national ranking since January 20, 2014.

The Wildcats (13-2, 2-1 Big 12), who are off to their best start since also opening the year at 13-2 in 2012-13, notched a national ranking for the 16th time under head coach Bruce Weber and the first time since being ranked No. 22 on January 20, 2014. The team has won two of its first three Big 12 games for the first time since 2014-15.

The national ranking will immediately be put to the test on Tuesday night, as K-State plays Tuesday night at upstart Texas Tech (12-3, 1-2 Big 12), which is a perfect 10-0 at home this season. The game will be televised nationally at 8:15 p.m. CT on ESPNews from United Supermarkets Arena. The Wildcats are 8-2 all-time as the No. 25 team.

K-State returns home on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats will play host to top-ranked Baylor (15-0, 3-0 Big 12) at 3:30 p.m. CT at Bramlage Coliseum on ESPNews. It will mark the seventh time that No. 1 has visited Bramlage Coliseum with the Wildcats winning each of the last three such meetings.

K-State will also host Lego Day on Saturday with activities set to begin when the doors open at 2:30 p.m., including multiple LEGO stations from Play-Well Teknologies. There will be a replica of the K-State campus made entirely of LEGO, an interactive LEGO basketball free throw catapult, a LEGO motorized block shot challenge and K-State vs. Baylor LEGO jousting monorail. Fans can also sign up to win a miniature Bill Snyder Family Stadium made entirely of LEGO.

The Bramlage Bundle ticket option is available for the contest, which includes a game ticket, $10 concessions voucher and a souvenir from the K-State Super Store for just $30 per package. A minimum order of two Bramlage Bundles is required. Tickets also start at less than $20 with a Wildcat 4 Pack or just $15 for groups of 12 or more.

K-State Women 18th, Men 30th, in USTFCCCA Preseason Poll

track-teamMANHATTAN, Kan. – The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has ranked Kansas State’s women’s track team No. 18 with 46.93 points and the men’s team No. 30 with 29.35 points in the indoor preseason poll, the organization announced on Monday.

K-State’s 18th-place ranking marks the third-straight season that the Wildcat women have been ranked in the Top 25 in the USTFCCCA’s preseason poll after being ranked fourth to open the 2016 season and tied for 19th to open the 2015 season. The men also made a sizable jump in the polls after finishing ranked No. 50 in the final indoor poll of the 2016 season, which was released on March 7, 2016.

K-State joins four other Big 12 schools in the women’s top 25, including Texas (5th), Oklahoma State (11th), Baylor (13th) and Oklahoma (25th). The Big 12 also has four men’s programs in the top 25, including Texas (7th), Texas Tech (12th), Oklahoma State (14th) and Oklahoma (24th).

Last season, the women went on to finish in eighth place at the NCAA Championship meet in Birmingham, Alabama, with 26 points on the back of national champions Akela Jones (high jump) and Dani Winters (shot put). The men finished in 40th placed with 5.50 points.

At the conference level, the Wildcats took home seven conference championships en route to both the men and women finishing in third place at the Big 12 Championship in Ames, Iowa, with scores of 107.42 and 9.50, respectively.

Senior Brady Grunder and junior All-American Christoff Bryan are the lone 2016 conference champions returning to the team this season, while All-American high jumper Kim Williamson also returns to the Wildcats for her final indoor season after tying for third place at last season’s NCAA meet in the event and winning the National Championship in the event outdoors.

The Wildcats continue their in-state road trip on December 12 as the team heads to Wichita to compete in the KSU-KU-WSU Triangular meet at the Heskett Center. Field events at the meet are set to begin at Noon, CT, while track events are slated to begin at 5 p.m. CT.

K-State’s Walker Named Freshman All-American by FWAA

reggie-walkerMANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a season in which he recorded 11.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks, Kansas State defensive end Reggie Walker has been named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), the organization announced Monday.

Walker is the sixth Wildcat to earn the honor since the FWAA began naming Freshman All-American teams in 2001. He is the first K-State player to be honored since place kicker Matthew McCrane made the squad in 2014, while he is the first Wildcat defender to earn a spot on the team since defensive back Ty Zimmerman in 2010.

A product of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, Walker was seventh overall in the Big 12 in sacks and eighth in TFLs but was tops among freshmen in both categories. He was also second in school history in sacks among freshmen, just 1.5 shy of the school record held by Dwyane Castille in 1984.

In addition to his sacks and TFLs, Walker concluded his initial campaign with 39 total tackles, three forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries, tying for third and eighth, respectively, in the final two categories.

Walker’s inclusion on the FWAA list is in addition other multiple honors this year as he was a First Team Freshman All-American by Campus Insiders and the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year by the league’s coaches and ESPN.com.

K-State opens the 2017 season at home by hosting Central Arkansas on Saturday, September 2. The Wildcats return 18 players that made at least one start this past season on a team that earned a 9-4 record and defeated Texas A&M in the 2016 Texas Bowl.
