Blue Jays Win in Overtime!

small blue jayEmporia rallied from a big deficit to take the lead over the Junction City Blue Jays late in their boys basketball game, but a Tye Dale pass across the lane to DeAndre Eaves was converted into a layup in the closing seconds for Junction City, forcing overtime between the Blue Jays and Spartans.

The Blue Jays, with Lonnie Autry hitting all but one free throw in overtime, went on to defeat Emporia 74-72.

The win was the first Centennial League victory for Junction City this season. JCHS coach Nate Schmitt said he was proud of the way his team never quit. “And probably the last minute of the game, and then in overtime I kind of took a step back. That was all the kids.”

Junction City improved to 4-10 with the win. Autry led the Blue Jays with 17 points, while Xavier Cason had 16, A. J. Range 12, and A.J. Dickerson 11 points for them. Dylan Farr scored 18 points to lead Emporia.

In the girls varsity game Emporia dominated for four quarters enroute to a 67-37 victory over the Junction City Lady Jays.

Junction City fell to 3-11 with the loss.

Junction City boys and girls teams play at Hayden Tuesday night.

Naz Mitrou-Long added six 3-pointers and 22 points for the Cyclones (14-8, 6-4 Big 12), who had a school-record 18 3-pointers while forcing the Jayhawks (20-3, 8-2) into 21 turnovers.

They also overcame a monster performance by the Jayhawks‘ Frank Mason III, who had a career-best 32 points while going 9 of 11 from the field, 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and 10 of 12 at the free throw line.

K-State Gives Baylor First Home Loss of Season

PowerCatWACO, Texas (AP) — Kamau Stokes scored 15 points and Kansas State held off a late rally to hand No. 2 Baylor its first home loss of the season, 56-54 on Saturday.

Stokes made both of the Wildcats’ field goals in the final 6:29, including a baseline jumper with 1:40 to go off an inbounds pass with 1 second left on the shot clock that made it 55-51.

Baylor’s Johnathan Motley missed two shots in the final seconds with a chance to tie the game, the latter of which was blocked by D.J. Johnson of the Wildcats (16-7, 5-5 Big 12) as time ran out and the Bears lost their second straight game.

Motley led Baylor (20-3, 7-3), which lost 73-68 at No. 3 Kansas on Wednesday, with 17 points and 14 rebounds, but he was 6 for 17 from the floor.

Highland Park Boys Roll Past Junction City; Lady Jays Win

small-blue-jayThe Highland Park Scots ( 8-6 ) jumped out to a 16-6 first quarter lead enroute to a 62-45 boys basketball victory over Junction City ( 3-10 )

The Scots hit 10 3-point shots in the win, and held off a Blue Jay attempt to rally in the third quarter when Junction City pulled to within nine points.

Blue Jay coach Nate Schmitt noted Highland Park can score and do multiple things. “They threw multiple defenses at us and trapping us in the full court and half court. Very good basketball team.”Schmitt added, “For the most part I thought we hung in there and had our chances to keep it close.”

In the girls game Junction City got by Highland Park 60-58.

Lady Jay senior Ally McKenzie had a big game for Junction City, scoring 25 points. That included 17 in the second half as the Lady Jays improved to 3-10 on the season. Highland Park fell to 2-11.

Royals, Herrera agree to $5,325,000 deal, avoid arbitration

kc royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals and closer Kelvin Herrera have agreed to a $5,325,000, one-year contract, avoiding arbitration with one of the top relievers in baseball.

Herrera can also earn $50,000 for making the All-Star Game, which he has done the past two seasons.

The 27-year-old right-hander is assuming the closer job after the Royals traded Wade Davis to the Chicago Cubs this offseason. But Herrera has plenty of experience in the role, saving 12 games last season when Davis was dealing with some lingering injuries.

Herrera has a 2.63 ERA over parts of six seasons, and has appeared in at least 70 games each of the past three. His strikeout-to-walk ratio last season was also the best of his career.

Kansas City has signed all of its arbitration-eligible players for this season.

TCU Tops Kansas State in Overtime

PowerCatJD Miller scored 18 points, Vladimir Brodziansky had 17 and Kenrich Williams hit two 3-pointers in overtime as TCU defeated Kansas State 86-80 on Wednesday night.

Williams opened the overtime scoring with a 3-pointer and his big shot with 1:48 to play after a trey by KSU’s Xavier Sneed made it 83-77 with 1:48 to play.

The Wildcats closed it to 3 with 25 seconds to go after Wesley Iwundu had a dunk and made 1 of 2 free throws on the next possession but Alex Robinson made two free throws at 15 seconds and after a KSU missed, Jaylen Fisher made a free throw with six seconds left.

Robinson and Fisher had 12 points each for the Horned Frogs (15-7, 4-5 Big 12) and Williams had 11 and 10 rebounds.

Kamau Stokes had 21 points and Sneed 19 for the Wildcats (15-7, 4-5).

Brodziansky’s jumper with 25 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 73 and then he blocked a shot but Stokes, who got the ball back but couldn’t get a last shot to fall.

Jackson Leads KU to Victory Over Baylor

jayhawkJosh Jackson had 23 points and 10 rebounds, then helped third-ranked Kansas prevent No. 2 Baylor from getting off a potential tying shot in the closing seconds of the Jayhawks’ 73-68 victory Wednesday night.

Frank Mason III added 19 points, including two free throws to seal the win, and Devonte Graham scored 13 as the Jayhawks (20-2, 8-1) pulled a game ahead of the Bears (20-2, 7-2) in the Big 12 race.

It was nip-and-tuck almost the entire way.

The game was tied 64-all with 2:23 left when Jackson went baseline for a dunk. After Mason made a couple of foul shots moments later, the teams began trading baskets down the stretch.
