Budke Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 Team

budkeMANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Austin Budke was rewarded for his excellence in the classroom on Friday, as he was one of five players named to the College Sports Information Director of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 7 Men’s Basketball First Team.

A 6-foot-6, 227-pound forward from Beloit, Kansas, Budke now advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

A member of the NABC Honors Court in 2015-16, Budke has seen action in 49 games the past year and half since transferring from Hutchinson Community College in the summer of 2015. The senior has played in 16 games this season, averaging 1.1 points and 0.3 rebounds in 4.6 minutes per game. He saw action in all 33 games in 2015-16, averaging 2.3 points on 38.2 percent shooting with 2.0 rebounds in 13.1 minutes per game.

A former walk-on, Budke was awarded an athletic scholarship for the remainder of the season on Jan. 18.

Budke is the second straight men’s basketball player to earn recognition to the Academic All-District 7 First Team after Brian Rohleder was selected for the honor in 2016.

Budke, along with current walk-on Zach Winter, helped Hutchinson Community College post a 55-14 overall record from 2013-15, including 29 victories and the No. 6 seed in the NJCAA National Tournament in 2014-15. He was one of only two Blue Dragons to start all 35 games as a sophomore in 2014-15, averaging 12.7 points on 47 percent shooting with 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 28.6 minutes per game. He was honored with the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence after ending his freshman season with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

The chemical engineering major and product of Beloit High School has appeared on each of the last three Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, including posting a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Fall 2016 semester. He has won the team’s Keith Amerson Academic Award as a junior in 2016.

K-State (16-8, 5-6 Big 12) returns to action on Saturday with a trip to Morgantown, W.Va., to face No. 13/14 West Virginia (19-5, 7-4 Big 12) at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN.

Chiefs’ Dorsey says talks with Berry, Poe are ‘very positive’

chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs general manager John Dorsey has had “very positive” discussions for representatives of safety Eric Berry and defensive tackle Dontari Poe, though he declined to say whether he expects to reach agreements with either of the pending free agents.

Dorsey also addressed his own contract situation during an end-of-season teleconference with reporters Thursday. Dorsey and coach Andy Reid both have one year left on their five-year deals. The GM said that “from my family’s perspective and mine, this has been the greatest four years of my life.”

There have been reports that Dorsey could be the heir apparent in Green Bay, where he played and spent most of his career, but he said “nobody asked me about it.”

The Chiefs went 12-4 and won the AFC West this past season, but lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Arrowhead Stadium in the divisional round of the playoffs.

K-State Freshman Schultz Wins First Big 12 Athlete of the Week Honor

schultzMANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off a record-setting victory in the pentathlon at the Sevigne Husker Invitational, Kansas State freshman Nina Schultz has been named Big 12 Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

Schultz tallied the third-highest point total in program history (4,271) to become K-State’s 12th female to earn Indoor Athlete of the Week honors in the Big 12 era and the first since Akela Jones was named to the award on Jan. 27, 2016. This is the first time Schultz has won the award in her career.

“A score like that for a true freshman, let alone a kid that is 18 years old, is pretty good,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said about Schultz’s performance at the Sevigne Husker Invitational. “We knew she was pretty good, but she might be better than what we thought she was.”

Schultz got off to a hot start in the pentathlon, using a time of 8.44 in the 60 meter hurdles to claim first place in the event as well as in her heat and move to third on the school’s all-time list in the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles. Leading the competition heading into the high jump, the freshman posted a jump of 1.74m/5-08.50 to finish second place with 903 points, dropping her to second overall in the pentathlon with 1,933 points.

The New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, native then posted a huge, personal-best toss of 12.11m/39-08.75 in the shot put to claim fourth place in the event for 668 points, moving her back into first place in the pentathlon. The mark moved her to eighth on the school’s all-time list in pentathlon shot put.

The freshman posted her second, personal-best in a row in the pentathlon long jump, using a leap of 5.99m/19-08, a mark that moves her to fifth on the school’s all-time pentathlon list, to win the long jump and keep hold of first place heading into the final event.

Schultz closed out the pentathlon with an exclamation point, running a personal best time of 2:19.95 in the 800-meter run, a time good for ninth on the school’s all-time list, to win the entire competition with a final score of 4,271 points. Her score is currently the top mark in the Big 12, the third-best mark in Division I this season and is the third-best mark in the pentathlon on the school’s all-time list behind K-State legends Jones and Austra Skujyte.

K-State returns to action on Friday as the Wildcats will split to go to two different meets. The majority of the team will head to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Classic, while the Wildcats’ horizontal jumpers will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the Tyson Invitational.

Blue Jay Comeback Falls Short

small-blue-jayThe Hayden Wildcats owned a 21-point lead over the Junction City Blue Jays late in the first half of their boys basketball game in Topeka Tuesday night. But the Blue Jays battled back, hitting a 3-point shot just before halftime, and then outscoring the Wildcats 15-4 in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter the Blue Jays tied the game at 48-48, but Hayden then went on to win the game 61-53.

The Blue Jays were down but kept battling in the contest. Junction City coach Nate Schmitt said that’s what they preach to the team every day. Regardless of what’s going on keep fighting. That’s one of our intangibles , toughness. And I thought our kids displayed a great deal of toughness in the second half, just fighting back one stop at a time and one bucket at a time.

A.J. Dickerson scored 16 points in the second half and finished with that total for the game.

In the girls varsity contest the Lady Jays led by 11 in the first half but could not hold the lead, and eventually fell to Hayden 54-49. Breanna Lewis hit five 3-point shots in the game, including four in the first half. She finished with 16 points for Junction City, as did Ally McKenzie.

Summary

Royals, Jason Hammel agree to $16M, 2-year deal

kc royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals and right-hander Jason Hammel have agreed to a $16 million, two-year contract, a person with direct knowledge negotiations told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal is pending a physical.

The 34-year-old Hammel went 15-10 with a 3.83 ERA for the World Series champion Chicago Cubs last season and likely will slot into the Kansas City rotation behind Danny Duffy and Ian Kennedy.

Kansas City was looking for another starter late in the offseason after right-hander Yordano Ventura was killed in a car accident in the Dominican Republic. Hammel was considered the best arm still available on the free-agent market.

The Royals also have Jason Vargas penciled into the starting rotation, leaving one job up for grabs when they converge next week in Surprise, Arizona.

Kansas Defeats Kansas State at Bramlage Coliseum

jayhawkFrank Mason III had 21 points, Josh Jackson added 18 despite dealing with foul trouble, and No. 3 Kansas bounced back from a rare home loss to hold off Kansas State 74-71 on Monday night.

The Jayhawks (21-3, 9-2 Big 12) beat the Wildcats (16-8, 5-6) for the fifth straight time and the 19th time in 22 meetings, though it was just as nip-and-tuck as their meeting in Lawrence.

The game was tied 63-all with 2:50 left when Kansas ripped off six quick points, but the Wildcats kept hanging around. D.J. Johnson hit three of four foul shots down the stretch, and Kamau Stokes hit a 3-pointer from the wing to get within 72-69 with 19.2 seconds to go.

Devonte Graham calmly hit two more free throws to put the game away.

Dean Wade led the Wildcats with 20 points. Stokes added 16 points and eight boards, Johnson had 14 points and Wesley Iwundu contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Kansas F Bragg can’t break law for 6 months, per diversion; Bragg expected to play at KSU tonight

jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas forward Carlton Bragg’s drug charge will be dismissed in six months if he doesn’t commit any other crimes.

Bragg was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia last week. He was also suspended from the No. 3-ranked Jayhawks.

Bragg was quickly granted and signed a diversion agreement. The agreement says he can’t violate any laws during the six-month diversion period. At the end, his charges will be dismissed. If he breaks the agreement, the city will start prosecution for the drug charge.

Five of Bragg’s teammates are listed as witnesses in the investigation of an alleged rape in the players’ dorm in December. Bragg is listed as a witness in a runaway case in the dorm on the same night.

According to reports, Bragg is expected to play tonight at Kansas State.

  • Kansas State (16-7, 5-5 Big 12) continues its stretch of Top 10 foes on Monday night, as the Wildcats play host to No. 3/2 Kansas (20-3, 8-2 Big 12) in the Dillon’s Sunflower Showdown at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN.
  • The rivalry ranks as the 8th-longest continuously played in the country (met every season since 1921) with the 6th-most games played (285). The series dates back to a 54-39 Kansas win on Jan. 25, 1907.
  • The contest will be 11th Sunflower Showdown to appear on ESPN’s Big Monday, including the 8th at Bramlage Coliseum. K-State is 8-12 (.400) all-time on Big Monday, including 4-6 (.400) vs. Kansas. The Wildcats have won the last 2 meetings to air on Big Monday in 2014 and 2015.
  • K-State is currently in a stretch of 3 straight Top 10 opponents for just the second time in school history and the first time since doing it against No. 4 Kansas, No. 9 Baylor and No. 3 Missouri from Feb. 13-21, 2012. The team will play consecutive Top 3 opponents for the first time since the 1964 Final Four when it played No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Michigan.
  • K-State is 22-72 (.234) against the AP Top 5, including 4-15 (.211) vs. the No. 3 team. The Wildcats have 13 home wins over the Top 5 opponents in their history with 4 of those coming against the Jayhawks in 1952 (No. 2), 1958 (No. 2), 2008 (No. 2) and 2011 (No.1).
  • Kansas leads the series, 192-93, including a 76-47 mark on the road. Since losing 19 in a row at home in the series from 1989 to 2007, K-State is 4-5 at Bramlage Coliseum with wins in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2015.
  • K-State ended a 3-game losing streak in dramatic fashion on Saturday, as the Wildcats held on late to post a 56-54 win over No. 2/3 Baylor. The team was able to survive a furious Bear comeback, as senior D.J. Johnson blocked Johnathan Motley’s game-tying jumper with 1 second left.
  • The win over No. 2/3 Baylor was the first over a Top 5 team on the road since knocking off No. 3 Missouri, 78-68, on Feb. 21, 2012 and the highest since upsetting top-ranked Kansas, 68-64, on Jan. 17, 1994.
  • Sophomore Kamau Stokes paced three Wildcats in double figures with 15 points against Baylor, including 11 in first half. He has scored in double figures in 13 straight games, averaging 14.0 points per game in that span.
  • The ability to get stops has been key, as K-State is allowing just 61 points per game on 38.9 percent shooting in their 16 wins compared to nearly 75.4 points on 47.6 percent in the 7 losses. In Big 12 play, the Wildcats are allowing 68.6 points in 5 wins and 77.8 points in the 5 losses.

THE OPPONENT: 3/2 KANSAS (20-3, 8-2 BIG 12)
