The Junction City Lady Jay softball team rolled to a pair of victories over Highland Park Thursday at Cleary Field.

The Lady Jays won the first game 20-1 in three innings and the second contest 16-1 in four innings. Both games ended early due to a 15-run rule. Junction City is 6-12 on the season.

The Lady Jays also held their Senior Night activities at the ball field.

Royals Lose Series Finale to the White Sox

kcr fourKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Derek Holland scattered three hits while pitching into the seventh inning, Jose Abreu and Matt Davidson went deep off Ian Kennedy and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 8-3 Thursday to split their four-game series.

Holland (3-2) exited with two outs in the seventh after giving up two runs, only one of them earned. He also struck out seven with only one walk in his latest dominant start for Chicago.

The left-hander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in his first six outings this season.

Kennedy (0-3) surrendered five runs on six hits and a walk before leaving with a strained right hamstring with one out in the fifth. The Royals said that Kennedy will be evaluated Friday to determine the severity of the injury.

Kennedy struggled from the onset, giving up a one-out single to Melky Cabrera and a 427-foot homer to Abreu in the first. Davidson added his solo shot into the fountains in left in the second.

Blue Jays Ninth in JCHS Golf Invitational

golfThe Junction City Blue Jays produced a team score of 357 to finish ninth out of 15 teams in the JCHS Golf Invitational Thursday at Rolling Meadows Golf Course.

Blue Jay coach Tim Hickert said Logan Roether shot a round of 80 and Tyler Gromlovits an 81 to lead Junction City. Both finished just outside of the top ten medalists.

Hickert noted Roether had a three hole stretch where he went double bogey, triple bogey, double bogey. “So that 80 is very impressive.”

Washburn Rural won the team title with a total score of 311. They were followed by Lawrence Free State at 315 and Manhattan 319.

Earlier this week Junction City finished fourth place in the Centennial League Tournament. Manhattan captured first place for the first time since Manhattan and Junction City were accepted into the league.

Maurice to Compete with Athletes in Action This Summer

mauriceMANHATTAN, Kan. – Sophomore forward Isaiah Maurice will compete on the international stage this summer with the Athletes in Action (AIA) Tour to the Czech Republic and Poland, May 23 to June 5.

Maurice will depart the U.S., on Tuesday, May 23 and begin a training camp with the 10-member Athletes in Action squad in Prague, Czech Republic on Wednesday-Saturday, May 24-27. The team will play the first of five games on Sunday, May 28 against the U-20 Czech National Team before playing the Czech team again on Monday, May 29. The squad will fly to Warsaw, Poland on Tuesday, May 30, where they will speak to high schools and do a clinic before playing three games against the Belarus National Team on Friday-Sunday, June 2-4.

The AIA team will return home on Monday, June 5.

Maurice will be joined on the AIA trip by Micah Bradford (Valparaiso), Zach Brown (Wichita State), Ignacy Grochowski (U20 Polish Team), Jalen Hudson (Florida), Jay Huff (Virginia), Tyson Jolly (Baylor), Travion Kirkendoll (Centenary), Wendell Mitchell (Baylor) and Derrik Smits (Valparaiso). The team will be coached by Valparaiso assistant coach Luke Gore as well as St. Francis Catholic High School coach Billy Donovan, Jr.

It marks the third time in the last five seasons that a K-State player will participate in the Athletes in Action Tour and the first since former Wildcats Brandon Bolden and Justin Edwards played with the squad in their tour of Estonia and Latvia in August 2014. Thomas Gipson and Jevon Thomas also played on the tour in 2013.

Maurice will look to use the experience to build on a solid end to his redshirt freshman season in 2016-17, in which, the Durham, N.C., native averaged 5.9 points on 64.3 percent shooting (18-of-28) in 11.9 minutes per game in the team’s last seven games, including two in the NCAA Tournament. Overall, he averaged 3.0 points on 58.6 percent shooting (41-of-70) with 2.0 rebounds and 0.6 blocks in playing in 30 games for the Wildcats.

Maurice is among nine returning lettermen for the Wildcats in 2017-18 for a squad that won 21 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third team in five seasons. K-State will welcome five newcomers (juniors Makol Mawien and Amaad Wainright and freshmen Mike McGuirl, Nigel Shadd and Levi Stockard III) as well as redshirt freshmen Cartier Diarra and James Love III, who missed the 2016-17 season due to injury.

Nathan Karns Dazzles for Royals in 6-1 Win Over White Sox

kcr twoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nate Karns pitched six innings of one-hit ball, striking out four in his final frame, and the Kansas City Royals cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.

Karns (1-2) wound up striking out seven with only one walk in his best performance of the season, one that helped Kansas City assure itself at least a split of the four-game series with the finale Thursday afternoon.

Mike Pelfrey (0-2) kept the White Sox in it until the sixth, when he gave up a single, double and triple in succession. Eric Hosmer followed with a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead, a shot to center that came within about 5 feet of giving the Royals a team natural cycle.

Learning the Game

players-twoUp to 98 youth, ages third through eighth grade, have been participating in a youth basketball program operated by Junction City Blue Jay head basketball coach Nate Schmitt and his coaches during April through early May.

Schmitt said they there were five sessions beginning on the first Tuesday in April and ending the first Tuesday through May. They focused on teaching the participants fundamentals of basketball. “We’re doing ball handling and shooting and more ball handling and more shooting. If you saw us play at the high school this year we turned it over quite a bit and we didn’t shoot it very well so we’re trying to fix that.”

Schmitt said he wanted to meet all the kids at once, and for them all to know one another. “The biggest thing is I’m getting the opportunity to meet these kids. We’ve got some of our Junior Jays coaches, our middle school coaches, our high school coaches…so we’re meeting the kids, we’re meeting the parents when we come in, our Jays committee is out there handing out information about summer camps and things we have going on.” Schmitt added they’re trying to make a connection and build that relationship so people know what is occurring or who to ask to learn about activities.

The practices included some three-on-three scrimmaging that was added during the final two weeks of the sessions. “Eventually we’d like to maybe do some sort of three-on-three league, an instructional league.” Schmitt welcomed all basketball alumni who want to become involved and help.
