Chiefs sign 6 free agents, waive 7 others in roster reshape

ChiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs signed six free agents, including former Louisville wide receiver Jamari Staples, and waived seven other players Tuesday following their rookie minicamp last weekend.

The Chiefs also signed former Indiana running back Devine Redding, Nebraska cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste, Marshall tight end Emanuel Byrd, Utah State defensive lineman Ricky Ali’ifua and Duke punter Will Monday.

The biggest surprise among the cuts was running back Darrin Reaves, who has impressive during training camp with Kansas City last fall. Also waived were running back Kelvin Taylor, fullback Will Ratelle, defensive lineman Cory Johnson, tight end Wyatt Houston, wide receiver Anas Hasic and cornerback Vernon Harris.

The Chiefs begin organized team activities on May 23.

Twenty Wildcats Named Academic All-Big 12

trackMANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team had 20 student-athletes named to 2017 Academic All-Big 12 teams, the conference office announced on Tuesday. K-State saw 13 student-athletes named to the first team, while seven earned second team honors.

Senior Jeff Bachman (marketing) and sophomore Morgan Coffman (management) headlined the group as First Team selections with 4.0 GPAs.

The selection marks the third-straight year that Bachman and senior Morgan Wedekind have been honored by the conference for their academic excellence, while seniors Haley Pitko and Marija Stambolic, as well as junior Kayla Doll, are each making their second appearance on an Academic All-Big 12 team.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a GPA of 3.20 or better, while the second team selections hold a GPA of 3.00 to 3.19.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Seniors who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Overall, the conference honored 246 student-athletes for their academic successes over the past season.

K-State returns to action on May 12-14 at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas for the Big 12 Championship. More information on the meet can be found by visiting the tournament central page here.

Clevinger, Four Indians Relievers Combine to One-Hit Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mike Clevinger and four relievers combined for a one-hitter as the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 1-0 Sunday.

Carlos Santana had three hits, including an RBI single in the fifth for the game’s only run.

Clevinger (1-0), making his first start in place of the injured Corey Kluber, gave up a double to Salvador Perez with one out in the fourth for the Royals’ hit. He walked four and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings.

Boone Logan came on in the sixth and walked Eric Hosmer, before Bryan Shaw replaced him and struck out all four batters he faced. Andrew Miller pitched a perfect eighth — keeping his ERA at 0.00 over 15 2/3 innings this season — and Cody Allen pitched the ninth for his ninth save in nine chances.

Danny Duffy (2-3) held the Indians to one run and six hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Two Blue Jays Qualify for State Tennis

The Junction City Blue Jay boys tennis team has advanced one of their doubles teams to the 6A state tennis tournament.

Guido Greco, a junior and sophomore Mason Richards, teamed up to earn 6th place at the regional tournament held at Wichita East.  In the first round, they defeated a team from Topeka High 6-2, 6-2.  In the next round they faced off against the second seed, a team from Manhattan, and lost a tough match in a 3rd set super tie breaker 10-8.  In their last chance to advance to the state tournament, they squared off against a team from Washburn Rural.  After dropping the first set 6-1, the duo rallied to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to qualify for state.

In the fifth place match, the Blue Jay doubles team lost to the top seeded team, a team from Derby, 6-4, 6-0.  Other participants for the Blue Jay team were Adonnis Washington and Kody Westerhaus in singles and Korbin King and Yuno Fernandez in doubles. The 6A state tennis tournament will be hosted by Olathe South and will begin on Friday, May 12.

Indians Homer in Ninth Inning to Defeat the Royals

kcr fourKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carlos Santana and Francisco Lindor hit back-to-back home runs with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Cleveland Indians to a 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

Kelvin Herrera (1-1) gave up the home runs in a span of three pitches. Santana took a 2-0 pitch out to right-center. Lindor hit his eighth, which landed in the Indians’ bullpen.

Andrew Miller (2-0) picked up the victory, while Cody Allen earned his eighth save in as many opportunities, but had to work around a walk and a single.

The Royals led 1-0 going into the eighth, but the bullpen could not hold it.

Joakim Soria, the third Kansas City pitcher, gave up three hits and the tying run in the eighth for his second blown save. Kipnis’ two-out single scored Michael Brantley.

Lady Jays Win Salina Central Invitational Track Meet

small blue jayThe Junction City Lady Jays scored 189 points to capture first place in the 10-team Salina Central Invitational on Friday.

Ayi-lissa Dotson set a JCHS record with a 5’5 jump to win the high jump.

Hannah Reynolds won the discus with a throw of 113’6″, Kienna Newman finished first in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.18 and first in the 300 meter hurdles in 45.72, and the Lady jay 4 x 100 relay team of Shamya Banks, Kienna Newman, Lyric Holman and Amaya Booker finished first in 48.82.

Savannah Adams finished second in the shot put with a throw of 35’2.50″ and Amaya Booker captured second in the 100 meter dash in 12.60. In the 200 meter dash for Junction City Lyric Holman finished second in 26.06 and Kienna Newman was third in 26.59.

The Blue Jay boys team finished seventh with 39 points. Hutchinson captured the boys team title with 120 points.

For Junction City Jacob Lovell finished second in the 1600 meter run in 4:37.72.

Jason Hammel Gets First Win for Royals

kcr smallKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jason Hammel allowed three hits over six innings for his first win with Kansas City, Eric Hosmer sent a two-run homer splashing into the fountains behind the fence in right-center field and the Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 3-1 Friday night.

Hammel (1-3) struck out six and walked two, ending a six-start winless streak dating to Sept. 19, when he defeated Cincinnati for the Chicago Cubs. Hammel, who left the World Series champions as a free agent to sign a $16 million, two-year deal with Kansas City, failed to get out of the fourth inning in his previous two starts

Rookie Scott Alexander, Joakim Soria and Kevin Herrera combined for one-hit relief. Alexander induced three straight groundouts in the seventh, Soria struck out Brandon Guyer, Roberto Perez and Carlos Santana in the eighth, and Herrera allowed Edwin Encarnacion’s two-out double in the ninth before retiring Jose Ramirez on a groundout for his fourth save in five chances.

Blue Jays Win Two in Baseball

small-blue-jayThe Junction City Blue Jay varsity baseball team defeated Highland Park in the capitol city 14-0 and 16-3.

The Blue Jays improved to 11-7 on the season.
