K-State to Add Enhanced Security Screening at Football/Basketball Home Events

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State Athletics will implement enhanced security screening at all home football and men’s and women’s basketball games beginning in 2017-18 in order to comply with the state’s concealed carry gun law as an exemption previously provided to universities expires today.

“This law has been in effect but universities had a four-year exemption to plan and put policies and procedures in place before the law affected the campuses,” said Casey Scott, senior associate athletics director for operations and event management. “That exemption expires on July 1, and we have made the decision that we will restrict weapons allowed into our athletics events in Bill Snyder Family Stadium and Bramlage Coliseum.”

As the department continues to provide a safe environment for all its fans, state law requires that in order to prohibit concealed carry on campus all public entrances must contain adequate security measures. K-State Athletics has purchased portable metal detectors to be installed at the public entrances to Bill Snyder Family Stadium beginning this football season and at Bramlage Coliseum for all men’s and women’s basketball games. In addition, appropriate armed officers and additional staff will be on hand to assist with the new equipment and screening procedures, as required by law.

Under state law, concealed carry may be restricted in areas where the university has established temporary adequate security measures (ASMs) or restricted access entrances.

The open carry of firearms on K-State campuses is not allowed. It is a violation of Kansas State University and Kansas Board of Regents policy to openly display any handgun in any campus building or on campus grounds. The only exceptions are for commissioned law enforcement officers and participants who use weapons as part of board-approved programs or university activities, with the advance written approval of the K-State Police Department.

K-State began the process of increasing its security procedures this past season with the implementation of a clear bag policy for all ticketed athletic events. A slight change in this policy will be applied in 2017-18 to increase the size of clutch bags allowed into athletics facilities to 5.5 inches by 7.5 inches.  More information about K-State Athletics’ clear bag policy can be found at www.kstatesports.com/page/bagpolicy.

As the football season nears, K-State Athletics will provide more details regarding the security screening and tips for fans to prepare for the new measures.

Fulmer outstanding in Detroit’s 7-3 win over Royals

DETROIT (AP) — Michael Fulmer came within one out of a shutout, and the Detroit Tigers hit three home runs in a 7-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.

Justin Upton, Ian Kinsler and Andrew Romine went deep for the Tigers. Fulmer (7-6) appeared headed for his second big league shutout, but Ramon Torres and Jorge Bonifacio singled with two out in the ninth, then Drew Butera drove them in with a double. Upton dropped Eric Hosmer’s soft liner to left field for an error, allowing another run to come in.

The crowd booed when manager Brad Ausmus pulled Fulmer after 104 pitches.

Jakob Junis (2-2) allowed a three-run homer to Upton in the first, as well as a solo shot by Kinsler in the third and a two-run drive by Romine in the fourth.

Fulmer retired the first nine Kansas City hitters, and the reigning AL Rookie of the Year faced only one batter above the minimum through eight innings. He ended up allowing seven hits, with seven strikeouts and no walks.

The first four Detroit batters reached base off Junis. Upton opened the scoring with his 15th home run of the year. Kinsler made it 4-0 with his ninth.

Romine’s drive to right was his third home run of the year, a career high. He hit two in each of the previous three seasons.

J.D. Martinez battled through a 15-pitch at-bat against reliever Kevin McCarthy in the seventh, finally hitting an RBI single to make it 7-0.

Junis allowed six runs and seven hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out five.

Brigade Blow Lead in 8th Inning, Lose to Midwest Athletics

Struggles by relief pitchers and one costly error proved to be too much for the Junction City Brigade to overcome Monday night at Rathert Field as they fell to the Midwest Athletics 11-9.

The Brigade led the Midwest Athletics ( 14-3 ) by a score of 8-3 after five innings of  the ballgame and by an 8-4 count going to the seventh. But then a series of struggles on the mound that included appearances by four Junction City relief pitchers resulted in the Brigade coughing up 7 runs during the 8th and 9th innings combined. In the 8th inning the Athletics went through their entire batting order as they scored five runs in that frame alone.

Brigade head coach Seth Wheeler got a good pitching performance through five and one-third innings by Nate McBroom but then he noted the first relief pitcher, Joseph Flood struggled. “Flood wasn’t as sharp in the 7th and kind of labored his way through it. So I shouldn’t have sent him back out in the 8th and I did. He struggled again, got us in a rough situation from there and it kind of just went downhill from there. ” Marcus Washburn followed Flood on the mount, but also struggled in the 8th inning.

A play in center field by Tyler Bracht of Junction City also had an impact. He ran in on a fly ball, realized it was going over his head, turned to try and go back for it but slipped on the grass that had become wet from an earlier rain.

Junction City tried to rally in the 9th inning and scored one run to cut an 11-8 deficit to the final score of 11-9. The Brigade left two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth.

The Brigade, ( 11-7 ) play at the Midwest Athletics Tuesday night.

Royals Drop Final Game of Series Against Toronto

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna struck out three in a scoreless ninth inning a day after saying he was dealing with anxiety issues, and Toronto avoided a sweep by beating the Kansas City Royals 8-2 Sunday.

Jose Bautista homered and drove in a season-high four runs and Francisco Liriano earned his 100th career victory.

Osuna didn’t pitch in a save situation on Friday night, and the Blue Jays’ bullpen let a game get away. On Saturday, the 22-year-old reliever said he was out of sorts mentally and feeling anxious.

Osuna returned to the mound in a non-save spot and gave up an infield single while getting the last three outs.

Bautista hit a two-run, 450-foot homer in the fifth that tied it. He walked with the bases loaded in a five-run sixth and singled home Kevin Pillar, who had three hits, in the seventh.

Liriano (4-3) allowed two runs on six hits while pitching into the seventh. He improved to 100-95 in 12 seasons with Toronto, Minnesota, the White Sox and Pittsburgh.

Reliever Scott Alexander (0-2) took the loss.
