Brigade Score Late to Defeat Sabetha

The Junction City Brigade ( 14-9 ) took advantage of errors by the Sabetha Lobos in the 8th inning to score two runs enroute to a 6-4 victory over the Lobos Thursday evening at Rathert Field.

Junction City also got a two-run home run by Charlie Peyla in the fifth inning. Peyla played at shortstop for eight innings and then switched to a relief pitcher in the ninth inning for the Brigade.

Junction City and Sabetha play again Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. at Rathert Field.

Perez Homer Lifts Royals to Win

SEATTLE (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer in the 10th, Alex Gordon added a two-out RBI single later in the inning and the Kansas City Royalscompleted a three-game sweep with a 9-6 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

Perez drove the second pitch from reliever James Pazos (2-2) out to right field for his 17th homer of the season. It was the third home run of the game for Kansas City, adding to earlier two-run shots by Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain.

Mike Minor (5-1) pitched the ninth to get the victory and Kelvin Herrera threw the 10th for his 19th save. Minor had a scare when Mike Zunino led off the ninth with a flyball to deep left field that Gordon caught one step in front of the wall.

Kansas City won for the sixth time in seven games and handed Seattle its seventh straight loss at home.

Royals Win Fifth in Six Games

SEATTLE (AP) — Whit Merrifield hit the first pitch of the game from Felix Hernandez for his seventh home run, Mike Moustakas added his 24th homer of the season, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 7-3 on Tuesday for their fifth win in six games.

Kansas City knocked around Hernandez (3-3) for five earned runs in six innings. Merrifield set the tone jumping on an 89 mph pitch in the middle of the plate and clearing the wall in left-center. The Royals scored three times in the fourth inning thanks to Moustakas’ two-run shot and a two-out error by second baseman Robinson Cano that allowed Brandon Moss to score. Salvador Perez had a two-run double and the five earned runs were the most allowed by Hernandez in his eight starts this season.

Kansas City starter Danny Duffy (5-4) returned after spending a month on the disabled list and allowed just two first-inning runs.

Kennedy Gets Third Straight Win as Royals Top Mariners

SEATTLE (AP) — Ian Kennedy allowed one run pitching into the seventh inning, Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon both hit solo home runs, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 on Monday night.

Kennedy (3-6) won his third straight decision with one of his best performances of the season. The lone run scored on a wild pitch as Kansas City handed Seattle its fifth straight loss at home.

Moustakas led off the second inning with his 23rd home run of the season and gave the Royals a 2-0 lead against Seattle starter Andrew Moore. Gordon’s home run came with two outs in the fifth, a pitch he broke his bat on but was still able to get it over the wall in right just beyond the leap of Mitch Haniger. It was Gordon’s fifth homer and second in the past three games.

Escobar Leads Royals to Win Over Twins

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alcides Escobar had two hits and two RBIs and Scott Alexander picked up his first major league victory as the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 6-2 on Sunday.

The Royals have won 15 of 21 games to move a game above .500 and into a tie with the Twins for second place in the American League Central.

Escobar went 7-for-16 with four extra-base hits, including a home run, with seven RBIs and scored four runs in the four-game series. He has raised his average 50 points since June 13 from .180 to .230, going 27-for-71, .380, in that 19-game span.

Travis Wood, who was making his first start since Sept. 19, 2015 while with the Chicago Cubs and 108 relief appearances, was pulled after 81 pitches and four-plus innings. Wood was removed in the fifth after facing three batters and retiring none. Brian Dozier and Robbie Grossman had RBI-singles in the inning.

Alexander (1-2) replaced Wood and induced Eduardo Escobar to ground into an inning ending double play with the bases loaded.

McDaniel’s Hit Lifts Brigade to Extra Innings Win

Trae McDaniel got the pitch he wanted, swung and his single to right field scored Garrett Francis to give the Junction City Brigade a 7-6 come from behind win in nine innings over the Topeka Golden Giants at Rathert Field Saturday night.

McDaniel saw a fastball. “A fastball, knew it was coming. Just decided to hop on the first pitch.”

The Brigade trailed 6-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning but put six runs on the board to tie the game. Then relief pitcher Nate McBroom struck out six Golden Giants in three innings to get the pitching victory.

It was the second extra inning game of the day between the two teams who were slated to play two seven-inning games. In the first contest Junction City trailed 8-2 before tying the game in the late innings. But the Golden Giants scored one run in the top of the eighth to go ahead and held on to get the victory 9-8.

Junction City is 13-9 while the Golden Giants are 14-7 on the season.

Vargas Earns 12th Win for Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jason Vargas picked up his American League-leading 12th victory, Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer and the Kansas City Royalsdefeated the Minnesota Twins 8-1 on Friday night.

Vargas (12-3) tied Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers for the major league lead in wins and lowered his ERA to 2.22, which tops the American League. He allowed two hits and one run over seven innings, while walking a season-high four.

Ervin Santana (10-5) took the loss, yielding seven runs, five earned, and eight hits.

It was the second time since 1990 that two pitchers with at least 10 wins and an ERA of less than 3.00 matched up. The previous was June 16, 2002, with Boston’s Derek Lowe (10 wins, 1.89 ERA) and Atlanta’s Tom Glavine (11 wins, 1.53 ERA) squared off in an interleague game.

Santana’s throwing error in the fourth opened the floodgates for a five-run inning. After Jorge Bonifacio opened the inning with a single, Lorenzo Cain hit a sharp grounder to Santana for a probable double play. Santana’s throw sailed wide right of second baseman Brian Dozier and into center field.
