Kansas to Honor Former Coach Mangino During Season Opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas plans to honor former coach Mark Mangino, who was forced out amid allegations that he abused his players, and the rest of the 2007 team that won the Orange Bowl, during its season opener.

The school said Tuesday that the team will be inducted into its Hall of Fame, along with former players Aqib Talib and Anthony Collins, during the opener Sept. 2 against Southeast Missouri State.

Mangino led the long-suffering Jayhawks to a 12-1 record in 2007, a season capped by a victory over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. But things soon soured and Mangino was forced out in 2009, when allegations surfaced that he physically and verbally abused his players.

One of his assistants on the 2007 team, David Beaty, is now the Jayhawks’ head coach.

Blue Jay Football Numbers Down as Season Opens

There were positives on the opening day of football practice at Junction City, but the lower number of players on the field was also a concern.

Coach Randall Zimmerman noted that the team practiced fast. Day one there’s no contact or anything. Everything is against air, and I was very very pleased that our kids that were around all summer long were able to step in and didn’t really miss a beat.”

The concern is that the number of players out for football is down. There were 103 players on the field at the beginning of practice, and a few players arrived a bit later, with some having to complete paperwork and physicals.

On the reduced number of players, Zimmerman stated, “It’s quite a bit down, quite a ways down.” Zimmerman added,  “The kids that we had out there tonight did a great job, really worked hard, worked with great discipline and I really liked seeing what I saw.”

The Blue Jays will scrimmage at Al Simpler Stadium Saturday morning, followed by the annual team picnic. The first game is September 1st at home against Emporia.

Gallagher Grand Slam Lifts Royals Past Athletics

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Cam Gallagher hit a grand slam for his first career home run and second big league hit, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Monday night.

Gallagher’s shot into the left-field seats in the sixth inning marked the first grand slam by a Royals rookie since Paulo Orlando connected in the first game of a doubleheader against Tampa Bay on July 7, 2015.

Jake Junis (5-2), recalled for his seventh stint with Kansas City this season, allowed two runs and four hits in six innings with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Royals moved into a second-place tie with the idle Twins, five games back of AL Central-leading Cleveland.

Blue Jays Begin Football Practice

The Junction City Blue Jay football team opened practice Monday at Al Simpler Stadium.

The team will prepare for the opening game against Emporia on Friday, September 1st at the Stadium.

Other home games for the varsity on the regular season schedule include Washburn Rural on September 22nd and Seaman on October 20th. The contest with Seaman will be the annual homecoming game at JCHS.

A country of around 400,000 people, Belize is located on the eastern coast of Central America with Mexico bordering it to the north and Guatemala to the west.

Sneed will look to use the experience to build on a solid freshman campaign in 2016-17, in which, the St. Louis, Missouri native emerged as the Wildcats’ top reserve, playing in all 35 games. He averaged 7.1 points on 42.9 percent shooting (78-of-182) with 2.6 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game. He ranked among the team’s top 5 in seven categories, including third in free throw percentage (72.6) and 3-point field goals attempted (112) and fourth in 3-point field goals made (38) and offensive rebounds (29).

Royals Drop Third Straight to Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina hit a grand slam one pitch after a cat ran onto the field in the sixth inning, helping the St. Louis Cardinals rally to beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals loaded the bases off Royals relievers Brandon Maurer and Peter Moylan. Molina was at the plate, with two outs, when the cat came onto the field and ran toward the center field wall.

After a delay while the cat was removed on the next pitch, Molina drilled his 14th homer of the season into the left field seats for his fifth career slam.

Melky Cabrera hit his 15th home run, a two-run shot, that had given the Royals a 5-4 lead in the fifth. St. Louis has taken the first three games of the series. Game four is tonight in St. Louis.

Cardinals Defeat Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yadier Molina, Jedd Gyorko and Randal Grichuk went deep, the Cardinals scored so much in the fifth inning that they broke the scoreboard, and St. Louis rolled to a 10-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Michael Wacha (9-4) allowed a three-run double to Cheslor Cuthbert but otherwise kept the Royals in check, surrendering six hits over six innings to win for the sixth time in seven decisions.

Molina homered off Jason Vargas (13-6) in the fourth and Grichuk and Gyorko connected to highlight the six-run fifth, when the crown-shaped video board at Kauffman Stadium suddenly went dark.

About half of it came back online in the seventh, when the Cardinals were tacking on runs.
