Reed, and defensive end Reggie Walker.

Cuthbert, Ecobar Lead Royals to 7-4 Victory Over Indians

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cheslor Cuthbert homered and drove in three runs, Alcides Escobar also had three RBIs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 7-4 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Cam Gallagher also drove in a run for the Royals, who finally got their bats going after scoring just once in the first two games of the series. Kansas City piled up 12 hits and six runs off Cleveland starter Danny Salazar (5-6), and finished with 15 hits for the day.

Jason Hammel (6-9) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk to win for only the second time since June 19. The Royals’ right-hander had been 1-3 with six no-decisions during that span.

Kelvin Herrera gave up a run against the bottom of the Indians’ order before finishing the game.

Blue Jays Conduct Public Scrimmage

The Junction City Blue Jay football put their talents on display during the first public scrimmage of the season Saturday.

Coach Randall Zimmerman pointed to the energy level and work ethic as strong points for the football team. “Just competitiveness. We’ve got a really good group of kids. It’s been fun. They care about each. We’ve just got to continue with that, continue moving forward. ”

Zimmerman said the scrimmage was basically a practice with situations in it such as third and long period, fourth and short period, ten coming out and ten going in. There was one period where they worked on moving the football. A trio of running backs were mentioned by the coach in response to the question of who ran the ball well. “Freshman Russell Wilkey ran it really, really well, Joe Vallery ran it well, Aaron Hamilton looks really good and coming on strong, had some wideouts really caught the ball well, Rooster ( John Adams ) is coming into his own, really coming around.”

Some of the players the coach mentioned that are showing leadership on the team included Rooster Adams, Russell Wilkey, Jacob Smith, Xavier Cason, Devante King, Tez Brime and Joe Vallery. “We have a lot of guys that are really stepping up and doing good things.”

On the offensive line Zimmerman noted that Jacob Smith is “really coming on, very, very consistent and doing good things.” Smith mainly plays at right tackle, and can also play at left guard.

The team was a bit nervous at the beginning of the scrimmage. “We were very, very nervous, forgot how to practice early, but they got it figured out as we went along. That’s part of the reason we’ve got two days here that we try to get some people and get them comfortable with Friday nights, and that’s been good.”

The annual team picnic was held in the JCHS cafeteria following the scrimmage.

The first game of the season for the varsity is Friday September 1st against Emporia at Al Simpler Stadium.

Royals Fall to Cleveland

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Corey Kluber put together another Cy Young-worthy performance before leaving with a sprained right ankle Friday night, and Jay Bruce homered twice to help the Cleveland Indians rout the Kansas City Royals 10-1 in the opener of their three-game series.

Kluber (12-3) was cruising along until there was one out in the sixth inning, and Eric Hosmer sent a grounder to the right side of the infield. Kluber winced coming off the mound to cover the bag.

The two-time All-Star faced one more batter before Andrew Miller relieved him. Kluber allowed a homer to Brandon Moss along with five more hits, striking out four and walking one.

Jason Kipnis and Bruce took Ian Kennedy (4-9) deep in the first inning, and Bruce added a three-run shot in the seventh to finish with five RBIs.

Edwin Encarnacion hit the Indians’ fourth homer of the night leading off the ninth.

Oakland Rallies Past Kansas City

Joyce also homered and had four RBIs. Khris Davis added his 33rd home run and Matt Olson hit his fourth in five days to help the A’s clinch at least a tie for the season series between the former division rivals.

The Royals hit three home runs in the top of the eighth, including Mike Moustakas’ 35th, to take a four-run lead before Oakland stormed back against relievers Joakim Soria and Mike Minor (5-5).

Ryon Healy and Olson hit RBI singles off Soria. Matt Chapman and Chad Pinder struck out swinging, and pinch-hitter Rajai Davis was intentionally walked to load the bases before Joyce lined a 1-0 pitch from Minor off the left-field wall.

The loss prevented the Royals from moving past the Angels in the race for the second AL wild card.
