OPENING TIP

Kansas State (8-2) returns home to Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday night, as the Wildcats play host to Ohio Valley Conference foe SE Missouri State (6-4) at Bramlage Coliseum at 7 p.m CT. It will be the second game of a women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader, as the K-State women (6-2) play host to Little Rock at 2 p.m. CT. The men’s contest will be the last of the 2017 calendar, as the team will play Washington State (6-3) at Spokane Arena in Spokane, Wash., on Wednesday, Dec. 20 before the start of Big 12 play at Iowa State (7-2) on Friday, Dec. 29.
The athletic department will accept toy donations for Fort Riley’s Operation Santa Claus at Saturday’s game, along with the women’s game on Dec. 21. In exchange for the toy donation, fans will be able to purchase a single-game ticket for just $5.
This will be just second meeting between K-State and SE Missouri State on the hardwood and the first since the Wildcats earned an 88-68 victory over the Redhawks on Nov. 16, 2008. Overall, the school is 15-1 all-time against teams from the Ohio Valley Conference, including an 11-0 mark at home.
K-State saw its 23-game non-conference home winning streak end in Saturday’s 61-54 loss to Tulsa in the Wichita Wildcat Classic at INTRUST Bank Arena, which was considered a home game. However, the Wildcats still enter Saturday’s game against SE Missouri State with a 21-game winning streak against non-conference opponents at Bramlage Coliseum, which dates back to the start of the 2015-16 season.
K-State has a 96-6 (.950) record at home venues in non-conference play since the 2006-07 season, including an 88-5 (.946) mark at Bramlage Coliseum, and has won 83 of its last 87 non-conference home games. This season, the Wildcats have a 6-0 record at Bramlage Coliseum (American, UMKC, UC Irvine, Northern Arizona, Oral Roberts and USC Upstate) with an average margin of victory of 24.8 points per game.
The Wildcats posted season-lows in 12 offensive categories in Saturday’s loss to the Golden Hurricane, including points (54), field goals (18), 3-point field goals (4), field goal percentage (32.1) and 3-point field goal percentage (12.9). It was the fewest points since scoring 50 against No. 11 West Virginia in the semifinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on March 10, 2017, while it was the lowest field goal percentage since shooting 25 percent at Oklahoma on Feb. 25, 2017.
Sophomore Xavier Sneed led four Wildcats in double figures against Tulsa and became the first player in recorded history to pace the squad in five categories with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block in 32 minutes. Sneed, who has scored in double figures in six games, has upped his scoring average from 7.1 points to 11.4 points per game while posting averages of 3.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.8 steals in 27.1 minutes per game.
K-State held Tulsa to over 18 points under its scoring average (79.2 ppg.) and nearly 7 percentage points under its season field goal percentage (47.1). The Wildcats rank in the Top 20 nationally in both scoring defense (61.1 ppg./13th) and field goal percentage defense (37.8/18th).

NOTES ON SE MISSOURI STATE

SE Missouri State enters Saturday’s contest with a 6-4 overall record and just like K-State has had the week off since a 75-69 victory at Southern Illinois on Dec. 9. The Redhawks have won four in a row, including road victories at North Carolina Central (86-77) and SIU to go with home wins over Hannibal-LaGrange (83-59) and UMKC (91-87). The school opened the year with just two wins in its first six games.
The Redhawks are averaging nearly 80 points per game (78.7) on 47.2 percent shooting, including 39.6 percent from 3-point range, with 35.0 rebounds, 14.7 assists, 6.4 steals and 2.6 blocks per game, while allowing opponents to average 74.7 points on 45.2 percent shooting, including 35.8 percent from long range. They are averaging 8.4 3-point field goals per game on 21.2 attempts per game with five players posting double-digit 3-point field goals. The team is shooting 73 percent from the line.
Sophomore Denzel Mahoney paces four players in double figures at 19.0 points per game on 52.5 percent shooting, including 47.1 percent from 3-point range, to go with 4.5 rebounds per game. He is also shooting 80 percent from the free throw line. Freshman Ledarrius Brewer is second in scoring at 12.9 points per game on 41.1 percent shooting to go with a team-high 21 3-point field goals, while senior Daniel Simmons averages 12.0 points to go with 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Freshman Justin Carpenter averages a team-best 6.0 rebounds to go with 10.6 points per game. Junior Jonathan Dalton paces the team in assists (5.6 apg.), steals (1.3 spg.) and minutes (30.5 mpg.) while shooting 50 percent from the field.
SE Missouri State is led by third-year head coach Rick Ray, who has a 26-46 (.361) record in his tenure. Overall, he has a 63-106 mark in his sixth season as a head coach, which includes stint at Mississippi State (2012-15). He previously served as an assistant at Indiana State (1997-2004), Northern Illinois (2004-06), Purdue (2006-09) and Clemson (2010-12). Ray’s time at Indiana State overlaps Bruce Weber’s time at Southern Illinois (1998-2003).

Head coach Bruce Weber is 5-1 all-time against SE Missouri State, winning 70-49 on Dec. 28, 1998, 62-51 on Jan. 2, 2000, 92-80 on Dec. 22, 2001, 85-69 on Dec. 7, 2002 and 89-64 on Dec. 28, 2005 to go with an 87-84 loss on the road on Dec. 5, 2000.

Chiefs Beat the Raiders

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kareem Hunt ran for 116 yards and a touchdown, the Chiefsshut down Derek Carr and Raiders offense and Kansas City held on to beat Oakland 26-15 on Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak.

The suddenly stingy Chiefs (7-6) also made a big statement in the crowded AFC West race. They entered the game tied atop the division standings with the Raiders (6-7) and the Chargers, who played Washington later Sunday and visit Kansas City on Saturday night.

Alex Smith threw for 268 yards and Charcandrick West had a touchdown run for the Chiefs, who held the Raiders without points until Marshawn Lynch’s 22-yard touchdown run with 8:51 to go.

By that point, the Chiefs were cruising toward their 14th win in 15 divisional games.

Carr was 24 of 41 for 211 yards with a touchdown and two picks, a far cry from his performance when the teams met in October. Carr threw for 417 yards and three touchdowns that day, including the winning toss to Michael Crabtree on the final play of the game.

That loss was part of a midseason swoon for Kansas City, which started 5-0 but lost six of seven to fall into a tie for the division lead — and put its once-solid playoff prospects in peril.

The Chiefs gave them a boost again Sunday behind a defense that was shredded by the New York Jets last week, and that was missing All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters.

The volatile young star was suspended by coach Andy Reid this week for a series of embarrassing incidents, including the throwing of an official’s flag into the stands in the Meadowlands.

The trio of Steven Nelson, Darrelle Revis and Terrance Mitchell more than made up for him.

So did Kansas City’s offense, which produced for the second straight week as offensive coordinator Matt Nagy called the plays. The Chiefs got four field goals from Harrison Butker, along with their two touchdown runs, and didn’t have to punt until the fourth quarter.

The Raiders tried to make it interesting late, recovering an onside kick after Lynch’s TD run. Carr connected with Jared Cook on fourth down for another score, and the 2-point conversion trimmed what had been a 26-0 deficit to 26-15 in a matter of minutes.

But after receiving the kickoff, the Chiefs‘ Albert Wilson made a juggling catch to convert a third down, and that allowed the reigning AFC West champs to mostly run out the clock.

Arizona State Upsets Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Tra Holder scored 29 points on 8-for-16 shooting, and No. 16 Arizona State pulled off a 95-85 upset of No. 2 Kansas on Sunday.

Shannon Evans II had 22 points and Remy Martin added 21 for the Sun Devils (9-0), who marched into Allen Fieldhouse and overpowered the Jayhawks (7-2). Arizona State shot 50 percent from 3-point range and 50.8 percent overall to hand Kansas its second straight loss.

After a slow start that forced coach Bobby Hurley to use a timeout less than two minutes into the game, Arizona State snapped back into it, trimming the deficit to just three points at halftime. The Sun Devils outscored the Jayhawks 58-42 in the second half.

It was another strong performance for Holder, who entered averaging 20.3 points per game. He had seven assists in addition to his 29 points.

Lagerald Vick led Kansas with 25 points, his fifth time eclipsing the 20-point mark this season. Devonte’ Graham added 19 points and eight assists.

Svi Mykhailiuk had an off day, going 3-for-14 from the field and not registering any of his 14 points until he hit a 3-pointer with 6 minutes left in the game. He had four turnovers and four fouls.

Blue Jay Wrestlers 4th out of 14 Teams

Four Junction City Blue Jay wrestlers placed in the top three of their weight class at the Shawnee Mission Northwest Invitational on Saturday.

According to JCHS Athletic Director Junction City finished 4th out of 14 teams in the tournament.

For the Blue Jays Terrance Adeleye finished first at 182 pounds, Max Bazan second at 132, Matthew Whitton third at 126, and Kenson Henderson third at 220 pounds.

Irish Classic Results

The Chapman Irish girls basketball team claimed the championship of the Irish Classic on Saturday. Chapman defeated Sacred Heart 48-42.

Kylie Adams scored 10 points while Brianna Loy and McKenna Kirkpatrick each added 10 for Chapman. The Irish jumped in front by 11 points at the end of the first quarter, and never trailed in the ballgame.

McKenna Kirkpatrick of Chapman was named tournament MVP, while her teammates Bee Loy and Peyton Suther were named to the All-Tournament team. The other members of the All-Tournament squad included Caila Hill and Maura Buhler of Rossville, Hailey Eaton of El Dorado, and Ally Cochran and Hannah Goetz of Sacred Heart.

In the boys championship Chapman lost to Sacred Heart 58-42.  Talor Warner led the Irish with 10 points while Izek Jackson scored 9.

The Irish Classic boys All-Tournament team included Talor Warner and Izek Jackson of Chapman, MVP Charlie Skidmore of Sacred Heart plus Caleb Jordan and Grant Herrenbruck of Sacred Heart, Jarin Koehler and Cameron Clausing of El Dorado, and Sheldon Hurlbert of Rossville.

K-State Loses to Tulsa

WICHITA, Kan. – K-State found the defense it needed in the final minutes but couldn’t find the shots in a 61-54 loss to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Intrust Bank Arena Saturday night. Four Wildcats reached double figures, including a team-best 15 points from Xavier Sneed, but cold shooting – K-State missed its last eight attempts and didn’t have a field goal in the final five minutes – iced any rally and a 23-game home winning streak against non-conference foes.

Dean Wade (13), Kamau Stokes (11) and Barry Brown (10) joined Sneed in double digits, but no Wildcat could find the bottom of the net away from the free throw line as Tulsa kept K-State at arms-length in the waning minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sneed powered K-State to a 30-27 halftime lead and paced all players on the floor with 13 points before the break. He hit back-to-back threes in the opening three minutes but the Cats would suffer through the first of two nearly five-minute stretches without a field goal. Sneed added a trio of free throws during the first drought but Tulsa led by as many as six points (14-8) before Wade broke the seal on a jumper and drew K-State within one with 12:19 remaining.

Wade then pulled the Cats even at 16-16 with a three pointer near the 10-minute mark, one of just four made threes by K-State as they launched a near-season-most 31 attempts from deep. Tulsa answered and pushed the lead back to five just two minutes later, but K-State found the spark it needed with a one-handed, put-back jam by Sneed followed immediately by a steal-turned-breakaway slam by Amaad Wainright for a 26-25 advantage.

As impressive as Sneed was in the opening frame, Tulsa’s Junior Etou matched the effort in the second. The senior forward from Congo stepped out to hit five threes in the contest, including three while pouring in 13 of his game-high 22 points after the break.

Still, the Cats and Hurricane were tied 49-49 with 6:15 to play before the first of two dagger threes from TU’s Elijah Joiner. With a crowd of more than 7,000 willing them on, K-State got a defensive stop and strong rebound from Sneed – one of a game-high-tying eight boards nabbed – then a bucket from Wade on the other end to trim the advantage to one. That was K-State’s last field goal of the game, though several defensive stops and made free throws pulled the Cats even and kept them within a single possession until the final 30 seconds.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Xavier Sneed – Sneed did a little of everything in the first half, including erasing what looked like an easy Tulsa lay-up, an assist, two steals, three rebounds and he led all scorers with 13 at the break. He added just two more points after half but still ended as K-State’s leader in points (15), rebounds (8), made free throws (5), assists (4), steals (3) and blocks (1). It was Sneed’s sixth game in double figures this season.

STAT OF THE GAME

17 – Lead changes in a back and forth contest at Intrust Bank arena. The Cats largest lead was the halftime margin (30-27) and Tulsa’s largest lead was the game’s final score (61-54), ballooning with four made free throws in the final 30 seconds. The score was tied nine times in the game, the last at 53-53 with 3:41 to play.

SEASON RECORD UPDATE

  • K-State 8-2 (0-0 Big 12)
  • Tulsa 5-4 (0-0 American)

IN THEIR WORDS

K-State Head Coach Bruce Weber

On the game…

“You have to give them credit. We talked about them being athletic and tough and they lose Jeffries (Daquan) who is probably their second best player, if not their best player at times. And other guys stepped up, they were very active in the zone, they were very active on the boards. They kept us off balance. I thought the first half we moved the ball and got good shots, we just missed them. The second half we panicked a little bit and just were not crisp in our offense and we forced some things, and down the stretch we definitely panicked. We have some older guys that have been through it and it’s a zone so it is a little different. In a man you can “run this” but in a zone you have to make some reads and get some inside touches. We just did not get enough inside touches, which was probably the biggest key.”

Blue Jays – Lady Jays Win Home Openers

The Junction City Blue Jays made ten 3-point shots enroute to a 49-39 victory over the Great Bend Panthers ( 1-3 ) at the Shenk Gym on Friday night.

A. J. Dickerson led the attack for the Blue Jays, hitting five of those three-pointers and leading the team with 19 points. Junction City took the lead in the first half and gradually pulled away in the late minutes of the ballgame to improve to 2-1 on the season. Aaron Hamilton connected on a trio of 3-point shots, while Kody Westerhaus and DeAndre Eaves both connected on one.

Blue Jay coach Nick Perez said the team played with some passion. The shooting is better for the team this season, “in practice and games. I tell my shooters get your feet set, let it go.”

In girls action Junction City ( 1-2 ) came away with a 69-63 victory over Great Bend ( 1-3 ).  Lady Jay coach Derek Petty saw Alana Kramer score 16 points for Junction City. “Her strength is getting to the basket and that’s what she did tonight.”

Junction City teams host Hays Tuesday night.
