Virginia “Ginny” Doane

Virginia Lea Doane, (Ginny) daughter of Dale and Allegra Scott Doane, died of cancer on April 23, 2019, at the Good Shepherd Hospice Home in Manhattan, Kansas.

Virginia was born in Hays, Kansas, on January 5, 1957, graduated from Colby High School and Fort Hays State University. She lived in Elmdale in Chase County, Kansas, and attended the Methodist Church there. She was a certified teacher and worked as a para-professional and substitute teacher in surrounding counties for many years.

Ginny was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Cynthia Eison of Cartersville, Georgia. She is survived by her sisters Sharon Powell of Wedowee, Alabama, and Jan McDowell of Manhattan, Kansas.

Ginny enjoyed sewing, quilting, and gardening. She was an avid cat lover and made a home for several cats over her lifetime.

There will be no service, but anyone wanting to make a donation in her name may send it to The Good Shepherd Hospice House at 3801 Vanesta Drive, Manhattan, Kansas 66503.

Bernice V. Taylor

Bernice Vivian Taylor, Lt. Colonel, age 100, USAF retired, formerly of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, died April 27, 2019, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

She was born to Ada Park Taylor and Peter Taylor of rural White Cloud, Kansas, on June 20, 1918. She graduated from the White Cloud Kansas High School in 1936, and Missouri Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1940. She joined the American National Nurses in 1940, and as an American National Nurse was called to serve in 1941 and served five months at Camp Funston in Kansas. In 1942, she joined the US Army as a member of the Los Angeles Medical Group organizing the 73rd Evacuation Hospital. In 1943, she was assigned to the China, Burma, India (CBI) theater, serving with the US and Chinese armies in Burma. Her patients for 2 years were Chinese soldiers. After the war she was stationed with the occupation forces in Japan. In 1949, she transferred to the US Air Force. She permanently retired in 1966, as Lieutenant Colonel, by reason of physical disability, with 24 years, 9 months of combined Army and Air Force service, from Elgin Air Base in Florida. She moved to Manhattan, KS, in 2012 to be closer to family.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers: Orville, Fred, Herman “Mike”, Leo and Ralph; also six nephews and one niece. She is survived by nieces: Phyllis Taylor of Manhattan, KS, Linda Taylor of California, Judy Holliday of Topeka, KS; and nephews: Donald Taylor, Sr. of Larned, KS, Ronald Taylor of St. Joseph, MO, and Douglas Taylor and David Taylor of Oskaloosa, KS.

Memorial inurnment services with military honors will be at 1:30 PM, Saturday, May 18, 2019 in the Peter Taylor lot in Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud, KS.

Marjory A. Kresin

Marjory Kresin, 91 of Glen Elder, Kansas, passed away April 27, 2019, in Manhattan, Kansas. A Celebration of life service will be held on May 11, 2019, at the Glen Elder Christian Church-Life Ministry Center.

Barbara J. Yount

Barbara J. Yount, 86, of Herrington, KS passed away on April 28, 2019,

Barbara was born in Kansas City, KS on October 15, 1932, daughter of the late Ada Belle Anne (Cole) and Ralph Gee. She married Robert E. Yount on January 26, 1952, and with him had two children. She was a proud military wife to Robert as he served 20 years in the Navy and the Air Force. Her hobbies included sewing, baking and tending to plants.

During her life following Robert’s retirement from the military, Barbara was employed at diverse jobs: Rieke’s plant nursery of Shawnee, KS; Office Manager for a Merriam, KS Title Service; office manager for Newcomer’s Funeral of Merriam, KS; office manager for a strip mall in Liberal, KS, owner/operator along with her son of a plant nursery in Liberal, KS. Barbara also accompanied her husband on some work trips to foreign countries during his employment with Wilcox of Kansas City, Mo.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Sanger, of Herington, KS, her son Kim Yount, of Sunrise Beach, MO, her grandchildren, Keenan Sanger-Koepke, Kimberly Yount, Luke Yount, Jacob Yount, Dustin Maly, Trevor Maly, and ten great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her Husband and her parents. As per her wishes, there will be no services at this time. Arrangements have been entrusted to Carlson’s Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home and Cremation.

Doris Peterson

Doris Eileen (Wagler) Peterson, 88, of Junction City, died peacefully in Valley View Senior LIfe on April 25, 2019.

Doris was born March 21, 1931 in Morton, Illinois, the daughter of Alpha and Vera Wagler, but later was adopted by Alpha’s brother and his wife Louie and Erma in 1934.

She graduated for Madison (KS) High School in the Class of 1949.

She married Walter “Pete” Peterson on September 24, 1950 in Pratt, Walter died March 19, 1998.

After moving with her husband to Junction City in 1966 from Iuka, Doris began working for the school district as a cafeteria lady. She later worked at Montomery Publishing as an advertising secretary until her retirement in 1996. Doris was accomplished at cross-stitching and frequently created gifts for family and friends. Doris was a generous individual who loved birds, but was passionate about cats.

Doris is survived by her sons, Kirk Peterson, Kerry Peterson, and Kyle Peterson and his wife Penny, all of Junction City, and Kevin Peterson and his wife Kay, Albuquerque, New Mexico; a brother, Earl Wagler and his wife Dorothy, Keshena, Wisconsin; a sister, Phyllis M. Innes, Apache Junction, AZ; 2 grandchildren, Kira Cook and Kelly Peterson; 2 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and her 2 cats, Kif and Spicy. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Al Wagler.

A graveside service will by 1:30 p.m., Monday, May 6, 2019 at the Iuka Cemetery, Iuka, Kansas.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Parkinson’s Foundation or to The Friends of Animals.

The family thanks Valley View Senior Life staff for their care and dedication.

Vonetta “Bonnie” Joe Quinn

Vonetta “Bonnie” Joe Quinn, 91, of Wamego, KS passed away Thursday, April 25, 2019 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, KS after a brief illness.

On January 21, 1928, Bonnie, was born in Stockdale (Riley Cty.), KS to Ross William and Leona Elizabeth (Willis) Davenport in the home. She was united in marriage to William “Bill” Peter Quinn of Wamego, KS, on May 10, 1948 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan, KS.  They made their home in St. George, KS, where they lived until Bill passed away on May 17, 1983 after 35 years of marriage. Bonnie was a homemaker raising their nine children.

Bonnie later moved to Wamego where she joined the Widows to Widows group, spent time at the Senior Citizen Center, and attended St. Bernard Catholic Church. Several years later she moved into Vintage Park Assisted Living where she was known as the ‘Hat Lady’.

Some of her fondest memories were traveling to visit family in Illinois, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Maine, Colorado, and more recent, a trip to Branson with her daughters.  Those trips led her to cross the Mississippi River and seeing the mountains for the first time.  She also enjoyed family camping excursions to Tuttle Creek Lake.  It was very important to Bonnie and Bill to raise their children to be good human beings.  She was proud to give birth to her children and seeing them through their many milestones.  Learning to drive at the age of 58 was another memorable moment.

Being the youngest of 10 children, she was very proud of her five brothers who served in the Navy during World War II, including Lloyd, who had a building named after him at K-State for his many years of service. The oldest, Evert, stayed state side during the war working for the Government selecting wood from the Oregon forests for warship construction. Her brother Leo didn’t return, missing in action. Bonnie worked as a nurse’s aide during the war at Ft. Riley, and then Manhattan, before her nuptials.

Bonnie is survived by 8 children: Karen Kathleen Collins, Cheri Colleen Ubel (Delbert), Judy Joan Jones (DeWayne), Michael Malloy Quinn (Jeanne), Cynthia Collette Chase (Dave), Carmel Candace Quinn, Angela Annette Bruce (Wayne), and William Warren Quinn; 30 grandchildren, Stephanie Schade, Jason Collins, Stacey Collins, Shauna Wells, Eric Cruthus, Christopher Ubel, Amy Havenstein, Megan Welfringer, Trina Toburen, Josh Jones, Molly Campbell, Jeremy Jones, Myriah Jones, Brianna Brown, Katy Streeter, Jesse Chase, Robert Chase, Quin Chase, Adam Chase, Collette Lowry, Marcus Waters, Amanda Slaughter, Anthony Ayon, Michael Bruce, Britany Bruce, Makayla Livingston, Brady Quinn, Cameron Quinn, Kelsey Quinn, and Jimmy Waters; 51 great grandchildren, Cynthia, Alex, Rebecca, Lydia, Kaelyn, Kannon, Karter, Lilly, James, Emerald, Sawyer (McKensy), Hailey, Hope, Logan, Georgia, Tyler, Michaela, Kade, Karson, Karlie, Kambrie, Kash, Dylan, Jordynn, Jalen, Kynsley, Kansas, Mariah, Payton, Hunter, Lilian, Vivian, Ethan, Quinn, Melina, Nora, Roman, Jude, Calob, Austin, Parker, Claire, Aliciea, Areil, Ryan, Kashtyn, Braxton, and Freya; 1 great-great grandchild, Archer; one sister-in-law, Frances Quinn; and many nieces and nephews.

She is also preceded in death by a son, James Jarae Quinn; her brothers, Evert Davenport, Gilbert Davenport (Elnora), Leo Davenport, Lloyd Davenport (Marilyn), Ross “Bill” Davenport (Nora), and Warren Davenport (Peggy); three sisters, Alberta DeVoe (Dick), Violet Oppenlander (Norman), and Ruby Threewitt (Malvern); and three brother-in-laws, Tom Quinn, Jerry Quinn (Elsie), and Jack Quinn.

A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan, KS.  Private inurnment will take place at a later date in the St. George Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested to Disabled Veterans, PBS, and the Good Shepherd Hospice House, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.

Jay Dwane Ramey

Jay Dwane Ramey, 70, of Abilene passed on to his eternal life April 26, 2019 peacefully at his home.

He was born September 10, 1948 in Abilene, the son Dorland and Marjorie (Mustard) Ramey. He grew up in the Abilene area, attended the local school district and graduated from Abilene High School with the class of 1966. He enlisted in the Air Force May 13, 1968. He served six years and was honorably discharged on May 12, 1974. After serving in the Air Force he went to work for KP&L on the gas side. He retired from KP&L in 1996. He then became co-owner of Hettenbach Construction, retiring in 2011. Jay was known as many things. A father, a father-in-law, a brother, an uncle, a friend, but the most important thing to him was being “Papa”. He possessed many talents and could diagnose a problem with engines or machines from a mile away. He thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and hunting. Many recognize Jay as being a great friend who would do anything for anyone at any time. This was true up to his final days.

Jay is survived by his daughter, Mandy DeDonder and husband Bruce of the home, their children Carli, Lucas, Cade and Brigan, Jason Ramey and his wife Tiffany of Hope and their kids Kelsi, Troy, and Tyler, sister Cindy Harwood of Abilene, sister Kim Woolridge of Madisonville, Tennessee, and brother Faun Ramey of Athens, Tennessee, nephew John Harwood, Jr, niece Chris (Steve) Seets, 14 great nieces and nephews, and one great great niece and two great great nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, brother-in-law John Harwood, Sr., aunt and uncle Doris and Grady Turner, and step-brother Gary Wills.

Memorial service for Jay will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 3, 2019 at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. Family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-8 PM at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. The family suggests memorials be given to the Abilene Elks Club.

Cort Marcus Mohler

Cort Marcus Mohler was born January 9, 1992 in Manhattan, KS to Mark and Deb (Mathes) Mohler. He was a 2010 graduate of Wakefield High School. While in High School he won numerous awards with his Eco-Meet and Envirothon teams. Cort also won the Steve Harper Award and the Kansas Wildlife Youth Conservationist award. He earned a degree as an Environmental Biologist from Ft. Hays State University. Cort worked in Colorado and Montana as a Wildlife Bio-Tech. He returned to Kansas and was currently employed at Blueville Nursery in Manhattan. Cort love fishing, hunting, outdoor photography, animals and being apart of nature.

Sheldon L. Bergstrom

Sheldon L. Bergstrom, passed away April 23, 2019 at the age of 79 years in North Augusta, SC. He was born on May 29, 1939 in Green, KS, the son of Eldon and Lois (Elliott) Bergstrom. He married Jean (Spilker) on February 15,1959. Sheldon was a graduate of Clay Center Community High School in 1957 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Southwestern College in 1962 and Master of Science degree from Emporia State University in 1968.

Sheldon taught school for 15 years prior to owning and operating Bergstrom greenhouse and nursery in Clay Center, Ks for 39 years. He and his wife Jean moved to South Carolina in 2016 to be closer to their children. Sheldon was proceeded in death by his parents.
