MSG (RET) Albert L. Cardamone

MSG (RET) Albert L. Cardamone, 74, of Junction City, KS died at Geary Community Hospital on May 3, 2019.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am., Thursday, May 9, 2019 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Kyle Berens officiating.  Burial with full military honors will follow at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, 2019 with Rosary at 7:00 pm at Johnson Funeral Home.

Robert W. “Bobb” Stokes

The Lord saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put his arms around you and whispered, “Come with me”. Robert W. “Bobb” Stokes went with the Lord on Sunday April 28, 2019 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan, Kansas at the age of 70.

He was born on May 2, 1948 in Bellefontaine, Ohio the son of Fred and Betty (Davis) Stokes. Bobb served his country with the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict. Following his military service, he earned his B.A. from Antioch College, his duel Masters from Ohio State University and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in 1984. He held many titles and Professor duties in his career and retired as Department Head at Kansas State University in 2017. He was named Professor Emeritus in 2018.

On March 5, 1976, he was united in marriage to Pamela Butler in Springfield, Ohio. This union was blessed with three daughters: Genna, Addie and Sarah.

Bobb had a tremendous love for music, especially rock and roll and the blues. His students knew how to get him “off topic” by asking him a music question. He enjoyed collecting, refurbishing and playing old guitars and ukuleles. Above all, he loved being with his family, especially the grandchildren.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Chi Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, Tau Sigma Delta, a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers along with many others. He also earned the honor of being a Life Scout and was a member of the Order of the Arrows.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters: Ritie Lanter and Jackie Stokes and his brother: Jake Stokes.

Survivors include his beloved wife: Pam Stokes; his three daughters: Genna Hirsch of Manhattan, Addie Stokes of Manhattan and Sarah Lambert (Alex) of Bowling Green, KY; three grandchildren: Haleigh Hirsch, Ellie and Winnie Lambert along with many nieces, nephews and other family members.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday May 7, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan, Kansas with Rev. Troy Bowers officiating. Private inurnment of the ashes will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Chancel Choir, the KSU Foundation or to the Good Shepherd Hospice House in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Naomi J. Berber

Naomi Jean Berber, age 86, of Manhattan, died April 29, 2019, at Meadowlark Hills – Lyle House.

She was born July 28, 1932, in Riley County, Kansas, the daughter of Roland and Frances (Dexter) Algott.

Naomi graduated from Leonardville High School and earned her LPN Certification from Manhattan Area Technical College.

She was a homemaker and worked for several years as a LPN at College Hill Nursing Home.

Naomi was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing, fishing, playing bridge and hunting mushrooms. Most of all Naomi loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On August 5, 1951, at Danforth Chapel at Kansas State University, she was married to T.J. Berber. T.J. preceded her in death on January 30, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her son T.J. Berber, Jr.

Survivors include her two daughters: Mary Jo Nelson and her husband David of St. George, KS, and Treva S. Berber; one brother, Larry Algott (Mary) of Wamego, KS; three grandchildren: Kinzie Jo Nelson and her fiancé Tim, Joshua Nelson (Courtney) and Kelli Nelson Greenwalt (Adam); and two great grandchildren: Pierce George Nelson and Abel Nelson Greenwalt.

The family would like to recognize Lyle House Coordinator Sherry Smith for her special loving care of Naomi. Additionally they would like to thank the rest of the wonderful staff at Meadowlark Hills who cared for mom.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, May 4th, at the Sunrise Cemetery with Father Kerry Ninemire officiating. The family will host a gathering from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the Kansas Room Pub at Meadowlark Hills.

William “Bill” G. Patterson

William G. Patterson, 83, a life long resident of Junction City, KS passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2019.

William is survived by his wife Jennifer of the home, his two daughters Julie Haden of Wichita, KS, and Susan(Denny) Coyne of Wichita, KS, one granddaughter Jessica Figueroa of Fort Myers, FL, and one great-granddaughter Aelynn Figueroa of Fort Myers, FL.

There will be no services at this time.

Sandra Jo “Sandy” Koppenheffer

Sandra Jo Koppenheffer, 72, of Junction City, KS passed away on April 30, 2019. She gifted her body to the University of Kansas Medical Program for the advancement of the healing arts. Johnson Funeral Home is assisting the family. No services are scheduled at this time.

Sandy was born on March 5, 1947, in Junction City, Kansas to August and Nellie (Kulp) Engstrom. She lived her life in Junction City and graduated from Junction City High School Class of 1965.

She fell in love and married Stephen Koppenheffer in October 1965. Sandy and Steve lovingly raised their family in Junction City. Sandy was a home maker until she decided to pursue a career with USD 475 as an administrative assistant at Junction City High School where she worked until retirement.

Sandy was a loving wife, dedicated mother, adoring grandmother and a newly made great-grandmother. She found her joy through being with her family and friends and caring for her garden.

She is dearly missed.

Sandra is survived by her loving family: husband, Stephen of the home; her two sons, Jeffrey (wife Nikki) Koppenheffer of Junction City, KS, and Roger (wife Donna) Koppenheffer of Highland Village, TX; daughter, Laura (husband Ozzie) Cornejo of Stuttgart, Germany; 7 Grandchildren; 1 Great-Grandchild; four siblings Judy (husband Terry) Ratliff of Wamego, KS, Clifford (wife Pam) Engstrom of Junction City, KS, Shelia (husband Randy) Cartwright of Junction City, KS, and William (wife Debbie) Engstrom of Kyle, TX; and a host of loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

John Thompson

John Thompson 69 died April 28, 2019 in Clay Center, KS. He was born on August 14, 1949 in Omaha, NE, the son of Francis Thompson and Marjorie Tenney. John was raised in Gordon, NE. He married Marianne Been on June 1, 2004. John operated an auto body shop and a gun store before opening a photography studio in Chadron, NE. After retiring, John and Marianne moved to Clay Center, KS. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Chadron and a member of the ISIS Shrine. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Michael Thompson.

John D. “J.D.” “Dan” Horan

John D. “J.D.” “Dan” Horan, 66 of Manhattan passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2019. He was born April 19, 1953 in Abilene the son of John and Nelda (Dayhoff) Horan. He grew up in the Abilene area and graduated from Abilene High in 1971. On October 27, 1979 he was united in marriage to Viki Hake in Abilene. She survives of the home.
J.D. worked 24 years for Westar Energy, the majority at Jeffrey Energy Center as a control room operator. He later owned and operated JDH Lawn and Landscape.
J.D. was a hard-working man, always striving for perfection. He had to be outdoors, and if his life had taken a different turn here or there, he would have fulfilled his dream of being a forest ranger. He loved golf and riding horseback, and he had a natural talent for creating beauty out of limestone. He took a great deal of pride in his daughters and grandchildren, telling them he knew that “they would go far.”
J.D. is survived by his loving wife Viki of the home. Three daughters: Tanya Schaller and spouse Randy of Park City; Amy Horan and spouse Kasey of Ohio; and Mandy Horan of Abilene. Three grandchildren: Zachary Zoeller, Rylan Northup, and Lucas Schaller. One brother, Tim Horan and wife Kathy of Abilene and two sisters, Marita Millner and husband Dick of Abilene and Joni Horan of Plainville. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Sandra Willey.
Graveside Services for J.D. will be 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Abilene with Father Don Zimmerman as Celebrant. Family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 P.M., at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home of Abilene. The family suggests memorials be given to the Humane Society. Jay Ramey

Jay Dwane Ramey, 70, of Abilene passed on to his eternal life April 26, 2019 peacefully at his home. He was born September 10, 1948 in Abilene, the son Dorland and Marjorie (Mustard) Ramey. He grew up in the Abilene area, attended the local school district and graduated from Abilene High School with the class of 1966. He enlisted in the Air Force May 13, 1968. He served six years and was honorably discharged on May 12, 1974. After serving in the Air Force he went to work for KP&L on the gas side. He retired from KP&L in 1996. He then became co-owner of Hettenbach Construction, retiring in 2011. Jay was known as many things. A father, a father-in-law, a brother, an uncle, a friend, but the most important thing to him was being “Papa”. He possessed many talents and could diagnose a problem with engines or machines from a mile away. He thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and hunting. Many recognize Jay as being a great friend who would do anything for anyone at any time. This was true up to his final days.
Jay is survived by his daughter, Mandy DeDonder and husband Bruce of the home, their children Carli, Lucas, Cade and Brigan, Jason Ramey and his wife Tiffany of Hope and their kids Kelsi, Troy, and Tyler, sister Cindy Harwood of Abilene, sister Kim Wooldridge of Madisonville, Tennessee, and brother Faun Ramey of Athens, Tennessee, nephew John Harwood, Jr, niece Chris (Steve) Seets, 14 great nieces and nephews, and one great great niece and two great great nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, brother-in-law John Harwood, Sr., aunt and uncle Doris and Grady Turner, and step-brother Gary Wills. Memorial service for Jay will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 3, 2019 at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. Family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-8 PM at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. The family suggests memorials be given to the Abilene Elks Club. Nellie E. Zook

Nellie E. Zook 96, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019 in Salina. She was born September 25, 1922 in Thomas, Oklahoma, the daughter of David and Ruth (Book) Switzer. Growing up in Thomas, Nellie attended local schools and graduated from Jabbok Bible School with the class of 1940. April 8, 1948 she was married to Jason Zook. Most all of their married life was spent in the Abilene area. She was a member of the Abilene Brethren in Christ Church. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Christopher Rosendahl and 3 sisters, Edna, Marie an d Lavina.
She is survived by: her loving husband of 71 years, Jason Zook of Salina; daughter, Deanna (Mike) Rosendahl of Algonquin, Illinois; son, Dennis (Lisa) Zook of Abilene; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and a stepsister, Wilma (Myron) Mann of Aurora, Colorado.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, May 2nd at the Abilene Brethren In Christ Church with Pastor Dale Engle officiating. Interment will follow in the Abilene Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:30 – 6:30 PM Wednesday May 1st at the Danner Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions in her name be made to Brethren In Christ Missions. They may be left at the church the day of the service or left or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home POB 758 Abilene, Kansas 67410.
