Darlene Sarah Biedenbender

Darlene Sarah Biedenbender, 81, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society-Wamego, following a short illness.Darlene was born December 16, 1937, at her family’s farm home near St. George, Kansas, the daughter of Arvle D. ”Beanie” Howard and Mary E. (O’Neill) Howard. She attended St. George schools and graduated from St. George High School. Shortly after graduating, she was united in marriage with Donald W. Biedenbender on October 1, 1955 in Wamego.  He preceded her in death April 7, 1985.Darlene was a loving homemaker and wife to her family, and she worked for 10 years as a para-educator for U.S.D. 383 schools in Manhattan. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Wamego, where she was very active in church groups such as AWANA. She loved her dogs, her farm on Lewis Wilson Road, enjoyed camping and traveling with her husband, and playing cards.Her survivors include two daughter: Kay Pittenger, and Sandra Temple (Larry), all of Wamego, KS; one son, Dan Biedenbender (Meloni), Westmoreland, KS; two sisters: Mary Gardner (Don), of Louisville, KS, Virginia Roberts (Larry), St. George, KS; 10 grandchildren: Sarah, Steven, Scott, Lydia, Paul, David, Saige, Shae, Sadie, Donald James “DJ”; 6 great-grandchildren; and a special friend to her, Kenneth Piper. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Arvle “Sonny” Howard, and two children: Donald W. Biedenbender, Jr., and Mary Lee Biedenbender.

Funeral services for Darlene will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego.  Burial will follow in Wamego City Cemetery. The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 6th at the funeral home.   The family has suggested memorials to the First United Methodist Church AWANA, and may be left in the care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.

Patricia L. McCully

Patricia L. McCully, age 95, of Manhattan, died on July 31, 2019, at Via Christi Village in Manhattan.

Funeral services will be held at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. with a private family burial following at Memorial Park Cemetery, Topeka, Kansas.

Mary Lucille Bettles

Mary Lucille Bettles age 91, of Herington, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 31st, at her residence.  She was born July 28, 1928, in Delavan, Kansas, a daughter of the late LeRoy and Florence Platz.

Mary was a charter member of the Herington, VFW Auxiliary, Dix Day, Post #1281, and a member of the First Christian Church of Herington.  She was also a member of the Town and Country Card Club for many years.  She spent most of her life helping her husband Orval run his soil conservation business.

As a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she loved spending her time with her family.  She would teach the young ones how to shoot marbles and the older ones how to play gin rummy, and kings corners, and occasionally a lively game of poker.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Orval, whom she married on June 27, 1948, as well as six brothers and two sisters, Marjorie Bettles, Ralph Platz, Clifford Platz, Lloyd Platz, Waldo Platz, Virginia Sarver Vess, Walt Platz and Howard Platz.

Mary was the mother of four children who survive her: Tom (Jane) Bettles of Kearney, Nebraska, Larry (Susan) Bettles of Herington, Connie (Roger) Beemer of Herington, and Ginny (Steve) Woodruff of Greeley, Colorado.   She was blessed with eleven grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.  Also surviving is one sister, Bonnie Wallace of Osawatomie, Kansas, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Daniela G. “Nellie” Lanning

Daniela G. “Nellie” Lanning, 62, of Junction City, KS, passed away on July 28, 2019.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 2, 2019, 2:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home of Junction City with Pastor Brad Seifert officiating.

Visitation will be held after services from 3:00 pm. to 5:00 pm. at the Johnson Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the services.

Nellie was born on July 22, 1957, in Dib-dib Dalaguete, Cebu, Philippines to Crispin and Veronica Calisang Gamboa. She immigrated to the United States in the 1980’s, and on March 6, 1982 she married a young sailor named Roger Lanning. Together with his military commitment, they traveled to many duty stations and ultimately called Junction City, Kansas their home where she worked at Footlocker for over 20 years.

Nellie was proud of her culture and was a member of the Filipino-American Club where she acted as treasurer for many years. She also enjoyed cooking for her family, loving on her grandchildren, and caring for her many plants.

She was loved by so many and will be dearly missed.

Nellie is survived by her loving family: husband, Roger; her son Giovanie Gamboa and his wife Mary Ann Gamboa, her daughters Misty Whetstine, Melissa May and her husband Zackary May, and Brittany Gandhi and her husband Vikas Gandhi; her grandchildren, Tristin Whetstine, Ian Gamboa, Morgann Whetstine, Trenton Whetstine, Maleah Batista, Luna May, Sybelle May, and Evelynn May; her siblings from Cebu City, Philippines; Leopoldo Gamboa, Estrelia Enalin, Nick Gamboa, Ricky Gamboa, Sally Gamboa and Crispin Gamboa Jr.; and a host of loving friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her father in law William Alvin Lanning.

Elvira Lou Henton

Elvira Lou Henton, 73, of Manhattan, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House.

Elvira was born in Manhattan, on June 19, 1946, the daughter of the late Irene (Nelson) and Lewis Henton. She graduated from Riley County High School, attended the College of the Ozarks in Branson, Missouri and Kansas State University. She was an active attendee of the Riley County Senior Center.

Elvira is also survived by her sister, Dena Haller, of Manhattan; a brother, Harlin, of Leonardville; nephew, Tom and Julie Henton and niece, Kara Zwygart of Meridan, Kansas.

A graveside service will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 2, 2019, at the Grandview Cemetery in rural Riley, Kansas. At Elvira’s request, the casket will remain closed and with no visitation.

Sara Ann Vanderbilt

Sara Ann Vanderbilt, 44, of Wamego, Kansas, died Saturday, July 27, 2019, at the Honor Health Deer Valley Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. She battled auto-immune disease and metastatic breast cancer for over 7 years.

Sara was born June 16, 1975, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of Dennis and Vickie Hashman Stewart.  She attended local schools and graduated from LDF-SEMCO High School in LeGrand, IA.  Sara then graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Public Relations.

Sara’s expertise was in Marketing and Public Relations.   She worked for Vanderbilt’s Management Company.  She also was a professional photographer, taking family & senior portraits for many years and more recently soccer photography for Cornerstone Family Schools of Topeka. She was a member of several professional photography organizations and had some of her work published in Professional Photography Magazine. Sara was a Health Coach and always encouraged others to choose a healthier lifestyle. One of Sara’s passions was being a home educator of her 8 children, seeing the oldest two graduate from high school and start their college education. She worked tirelessly teaching and taking the children to activities with Cornerstone Family Schools like soccer, choir, track, and fine arts competitions, as well as many, many dance rehearsals. She enjoyed health and fitness for many years before her sickness. She enjoyed doing graphic design, cleaning/organizing the house, and encouraging others through gifts and notes. She attended Northland Christian Church in Topeka, KS with her family.

Sara married Andrew Vanderbilt on June 13, 1998, in Marshalltown, IA.  He survives at their home.

She is also survived by her children; Dane, Dara, Dacey, Drake, Deja, Dekan, Denton, & Demi, her parents, siblings, Bryan & Chris Stewart, also Andrew’s parents, David & Jan Vanderbilt, and brother, Thomas Vanderbilt.

A Memorial service will be held Monday, August 5, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at Northland Christian Church in Topeka, Kansas.  Pastor Dave Rizer will be officiating.  The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 5:30 p.m.  A private family burial will be held in Wamego City Cemetery.  Memorial contributions are suggested to  Life Choice Ministries in Manhattan, Northland Christian Church Memorial Fund in Topeka or Cancer Crackdown and those may be sent in care of Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego.

Daniela G. Lanning, 62, of Junction City, KS, passed away on July 28, 2019.

Morris H. Beckman

Morris H. Beckman, 93, of Junction City, KS, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2019 at the Salina Regional Health Center. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday, August 8, 2019, at the St. Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Kyle Berens officiating. The burial of cremated remains will be at 2:00 p.m., August 8, at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery with full military honors. A visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at the Johnson Funeral Home with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to be given to St. Xavier Catholic Church or to the Junction City Animal Shelter.

Morris was born July 15, 1926, at Elgin, NE the son of William and Johanna (Starman) Beckman.

He married Dorothy Snyder April 12, 1950 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Richmond, VA.

Mr. Beckman was drafted into military service and spent over twenty years in the Counter-Intelligence Corps. He was assigned to Lackland Army Airfield, TX; Fort Holibird, MD twice; Manila, Philippines, stationed at Camp John Hay in Northern Luzon; Korea; Richmond, VA; Kyoto, Japan; Tokyo, Japan; Fort George Meade, MD; Madisonville, KY; Army Language School, Monteray, CA; Munich, Germany; Berlin, Germany; Little Rock, Arkansas; and Fort Riley, KS, where he retired to be with his family. He spent two years with the KS-NE Gas Company before returning to Fort Riley where he spent eighteen years as Chief of the Personnel Security Branch for the G2, and Chief of the Personnel Security Branch for the Third ROTC unit.

Mr. Beckman was awarded the Good Conduct Medal seven times to include one Presidential Unit Award (Navy). He earned a file full of commendations for outstanding performance and one from the Secretary of the Army. He made friends with the head-hunters of Northern Luzon while stationed at Camp John Hay, and his reports were listed in the G2 Bulletin from General MacArthur’s HQ on a weekly basis.

Morris is survived by his wife Dorothy Beckman, at their home in Junction City, KS; five children, Mary Morissa (Beckman) Lavender of Denton, TX, Mary Rebecca (Beckman) McMillin-Beckman of Junction City, KS, Joseph M. Beckman of San Antonio, TX, David S. Beckman of Crowley, TX and Trudi C. Beckman of Ft. Worth, TX; three brothers, Lyle Beckman of Lenexa, KS, Father Martin Beckman of Minnesota and Philip Beckman of Colorado; two sisters, Joan (Beckman) Pollock of Ewing, NE and Joyce Marie (Beckman) Anderson of Sioux Falls, SD; eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Morris was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Larry, Vernol (Slim), Cletus (Dick) and Mark, who died in infancy.

Mercadies Alexandria (Sadie) Miller

Mercadies Alexandria (Sadie) Miller, 22, of Council Grove, passed away Sunday, July 28th.

Sadie was born March 3, 1997, in Council Grove, the daughter of Aimee and Shane Miller. Memorial contributions to, Children’s Mercy Hospital Kansas City, MO or the KU Medical Center, both for Cancer Research and may be sent to the funeral home.

Marvalee A. Nightingale

Marvalee A. Nightingale, age 90, of Manhattan, died July 28, 2019, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

She was born November 19, 1928, in Asherville, Kansas, the daughter of Harry and Treca (Shaffer) Rehmert. She graduated from Beloit High School in 1948.

Marvalee was married to William E. “Bill” Nightingale on February 10, 1954.

She was a homemaker, and worked for several years with her husband at Manhattan Nursery.

Marvalee enjoyed gardening, her flowers, walking every day and spoiled all her pets. Most of all she loved and was devoted to her family and was affectionately called “Nan” by her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and grandson Alan Coonrod.

Survivors include her two daughters: Stephanie Pride of Manhattan, and Teresa Wright (Steve) of Yukon, OK; five grandchildren: Jamie Pride (Stephanie) of Manhattan, Kimberly Pride of Herndon, VA, Brian Coonrod (Michelle) of Manhattan, Laura Strand (Zac) of Blanchard, OK, and Rebecca Webb of Edmond, OK; six great-grandchildren: Gabriel and Abigail Pride, Kelsey, Cole, Cameron and Cain Coonrod; and two brothers: Jim Rehmert (Joan) of Salina, and Jerry Rehmert (Jo) of Beloit.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 31st, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 1st, at the Elmwood Cemetery in Beloit, Kansas, with Reverend James Brackett officiating.
