Charles “Chuck” Roy Pearson

Charles “Chuck” Roy Pearson, 51, of Lenexa, KS, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 in Kansas City, KS. A funeral will be 10:00 AM Monday, August 26, 2019 at the Johnson Funeral Home 203 N. Washington Street in Junction City, KS. Reverend Steven Cousin will officiate.

Charles was born April 3, 1968, in Friedberg, Germany the son of Joseph B. and Karin B. (Kolossa) Pearson.

Chuck graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1987. After graduation, he joined the United States Army. He later retired from the United States Army as a Captain. He earned a BA Degree from DeVry University. He served as a police officer for the Baltimore Maryland Police Department. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

On February 7, 2000, he married Kesha Pearson in Clarksville, TN. They were later divorced.

Survivors include one son, Jordan D. Pearson of Tampa, FL; his father, Joseph B. Pearson, Jr. and his wife Tasha of Clarksville, VA; his mother, Karin B. Pearson and her partner John Abels both of Junction City, KS; two brothers, Joseph B. Pearson, III and his partner Melissa Estell both of Junction City, KS and Jurgen Plotz and his wife Birgit of Germany; six aunts, Helga Rydc and family, Maria Grant and her husband John, Gloria Royster and her husband Allen, Mary Pearson, Lydia Roberts and Henrietta McAllister; two uncles, Freeman Pearson and Vernell Marable and host of cousins, family and friends and his closest friend SGM Michael Berry and his wife Kenya of San Antonio, TX and two fur babies Tikki and Razell

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph B. Pearson, Annie S. Pearson, Elfriede Kolossa and Erich Kolossa and two aunts, Elsie Pearson and Martha Royster.

Christopher David Schurle

Christopher David Schurle, age 35 of Leonardville, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2019.

He was born on June 26, 1984 in Manhattan.

A celebration of his life will be held on August 31, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Frontage 109, 109 W. Barton, Leonardville, Kansas 66449.

A memorial has been set up at Peoples State Bank in Leonardville and Manhattan for his daughter’s, Emma and Erin Schurle’s Education Fund.  Memorial contributions may also be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Phyllis Lee (Besore) Jackson

Phyllis Lee (Besore) Jackson, 75, of Enterprise, Kansas, passed away August 21, 2019 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.
Phyllis was born on November 21, 1943 in Newton, Kansas to Walter Roland and Laura Irene (Rouse) Besore and was the youngest of their four children. She moved to Enterprise after high school and had made Enterprise her home since then. On November 22, 1963, she married Leon Ray Jackson and raised three children with him, Peter Roland, Derek Alan and Shannon Irene.
Phyllis was committed to making her community a better place and was an active volunteer and civic member in the community. She was a member of the Enterprise City Council for many years, including at the time of her death. She was also involved in the sports community, serving for many years as a leader within the baseball and softball associations in Dickinson County. Additionally, she and her family were active for many years in maintaining the fields and concession stand at the Enterprise ballfield. Phyllis also owned a hair salon within her home for many years serving many in the community. Phyllis loved quilting and ensured that every family member had at least one of her handmade creations. Phyllis was a member of the First Baptist Church of Enterprise.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, Walter, and her mother, Irene. She is survived by her husband of over 55 years, Ray; her siblings and their spouses, Wilbur (Arlene) Besore of Newton, Barbara Holloway of Lakeside, Oregon, and Ed (Janell) Besore of Haslet, Texas; her sisters-in-law Twila Jackson and Pam Jackson of Abilene and her brother-in-law Bill Nowlan of Sterling; her three children and their spouses, Peter Jackson of Enterprise, Derek (Shelli) Jackson of Manhattan, and Shannon (Ross) Stites of Overland Park. She is also survived by her grandchildren, their spouses and children, Kieli (Vonley) Frey of Clyde and their children, Maddox, Maxson and Kenna; Katie Jackson of Concordia and her child, Kam; Lyndsay Jones of Manhattan; Anna (Mike) Rubey of Jefferson City, Missouri; Gage Jackson of Boulder, Colorado; Gunnar Jackson of Riley; Griffith Stites of Overland Park; Elise Jackson of Manhattan; Garren Jackson and Grayden Jackson of Riley; Brita Stites of Overland Park and Landree Jackson of Riley. She also leaves behind special friends Kenny and Sheri Johnston and Kensie (Brandon) Hoag and other beloved family members, nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 27 at the First Baptist Church of Enterprise at 10 am. The family will receive family and friends from 6-8 pm on Monday, August 26 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory are requested to Elsie Brooks Memorial Cancer Fund, Enterprise First Baptist Church or the Community Foundation of Dickinson County “Phyllis Jackson memorial” (for the benefit of the City of Enterprise). Joyce Cox

Funeral services for Joyce Cox, age 83, of Abilene, will be 10:30 am Monday, August 26, 2019 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home with Pastor Stan Norman officiating. Mrs. Cox passed away Sunday, August 18, 2019 at the Village Manor Nursing Home in Abilene.

She was born July 12, 1936 in Hope, Kansas the daughter of Alfred W. and Rose Amanda (Kohls) SinClair. Joyce graduated from Hope High School.

On December 26, 1954 Joyce was united in marriage to Joe Henry Cox, Jr in Hope. Together they ran the Gambles Store for over 25 years. When they sold the store, Joyce worked at the Eisenhower Presidential Museum for many years.

Joyce and Joe loved square dancing and was a member of the Herington Hoedowners Club. She loved traveling or what she called “adventures” to all fifty states, and even traveled to seven countries in Europe. In her 70’s Joyce zip lined and was an avid Kansas City Royals fan.

Joyce is survived by her son Gregory Joe and his wife Susan Cox of Abilene, daughters Kimberly Jo and her husband Charlie Hicks of Hope, Kathy Jo and her husband Mark Chaput of Salina, sister Patricia Randall of Kansas City, Missouri, son in law Bruce Enger of Talmage, eleven grandchildren and twenty six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Joe Cox on August 11, 2008, daughter Kelle Jo Enger in October 15, 2008, grandson Lucas Hicks on August 18, 2018, her sister Alene Dornberger, and her parents.

The family has selected cremation. They will be receiving friends from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Sunday, August 25, 2019 at the funeral home. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dickinson County Home Health and Hospice and may be sent in care Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.

Opal (Meyer) Craney

Opal (Meyer) Craney, formerly of Peabody, Kansas, passed away August 20, 2019, at Homestead Assisted Living in Manhattan, at the age of 104.

Opal was born in Inman, Kansas, in the home of her parents, Arthur and Rachel (Brady) Meyer on January 3, 1915. She moved with her family to Hesston, Kansas, when she was five years old. She was baptized in the Methodist Church in Hesston. She graduated from high school from The Mennonite Academy in Hesston in 1933. She loved to sing in the choir at church and school choirs. She loved to play tennis, basketball and softball. After graduating high school, she went to Wichita to work as a nanny. Then she moved to Newton, Kansas, where she worked at Young’s Lunch and Graber Hardware. That is where she met the love of her life, Ellis Craney. They were married on December 30, 1945.

Opal then became a farm wife where she helped Ellis on the farm by driving a big truck hauling many loads of wheat, milo, corn and soybeans to the elevator. She helped with many farm chores and always cooked the best meals for farm workers and her family. Opal was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, the Sorosis Club, the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She sang in the church choir for many years.

Opal is survived by her daughter, Sally Ammeter; three grandchildren: Robert Ammeter and his wife Christine, Amy Drake and her husband Douglas and Angela Bunger and her husband Chad; six great grandchildren: Samantha, Alison and Jacob Ammeter, Daniel Drake, Mitchell and Collin Bunger; and many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ellis in 1999 after 54 years of marriage; her son in law Myron Ammeter; and her brother and his wife Albert Meyer and Ruth.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 26th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with reverend Melanie Nord officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Monday at the Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody, Kansas.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. Monday at the funeral home prior to the funeral service.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the First United Methodist Church in Peabody, Kansas, or the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Nancy C Havenstein

Nancy C Havenstein, 88, of Manhattan, Kansas passed away Tuesday morning, August 20, 2019.

Nancy was born in Manhattan, Kansas on December 19, 1930, to Walter and Ethel (Brown) Gravenstein. She attended the Manhattan schools and Graduated from Manhattan High School in 1948, graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelors Degree in 1972 and in 1977 with a Masters of Education.

On May 4, 1949, she was married to her sweetheart, H. Neil Havenstein in Junction City, Kansas. Together they had three sons.

Nancy was a lifetime member of the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Manhattan.

She was a teacher at USD #383 until she retired after 20 years. She volunteered as a tutor for many years after she retired.

Nancy is survived by her sons, Robert (Nancy) Havenstein, of Lamar, CO, Steven (Diana) Havenstein, of Manhattan KS, Michael (Patsy) Havenstein, of Manhattan, KS; her sister, Sandy Woodward, of Reddington, CA, her brother, Don Gravenstein, of Stillwell, KS; as well as 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Neil; two brothers, Walter Gravenstein and George Gravenstein, and a grandson Greg Havenstein.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St Luke’s Lutheran Church 330 Sunset Ave Manhattan, KS 66502 or the American Cancer Association, or the St. Luke’s Fund for Parents who have lost children.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 26, 2019, at 10:00 AM at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Burial to follow at Sunrise Cemetery. A Visitation will be on Sunday, August 25, 2019, from 7:00 PM till 8:00 PM at Carlson’s Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home and Cremation.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Carlson’s Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home and Cremation.

Ralph Vernon Setzer

Ralph Vernon Setzer, 58, of Flush, Kansas, died Wednesday, August 21, 2019, at the Westy Community Care Home in Westmoreland.  He was a life-long resident of the area.

Ralph was born on November 19, 1960, in Wamego, the son of Vernon and Christine Rau Setzer.  He attended Flush Grade school and graduated in 1979 from Westmoreland High School.

Ralph was a farmer and stockman his entire life.  First working with his father then owning and operating the family farm near Flush.  He also worked twelve years for Pottawatomie County Road Department.  He also drove a truck hauling feed for a local feedlot.  Ralph was injured in a farming accident in the early 1990s’ and battled many physical issues, but was able to continue to farm until last year.

Ralph enjoyed his family and especially enjoyed his niece and nephew.  He was a great visitor and enjoyed his conversations with his coffee buddies in Wamego every morning.  Ralph enjoyed working the crossword puzzle in the newspaper, and doing mechanics.  He built a single tractor out of three completely different ones.  Ralph loved his guns and enjoyed Coyote hunting.

Ralph is survived by his sister; Susan Prebyl (Dale), Oketo, Kansas; his nephew, Jerrod Prebyl and niece, Angela Prebyl, both of Oketo.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside inurnment service will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, August 29, 2019, at Wamego City Cemetery.  The family will greet friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, on Wednesday, at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego.  They suggest memorial contributions to the 7 Township Volunteer Fire Department (Westmoreland), and those may be sent in care of the mortuary.

Pauline Catherine Strand

Pauline Catherine Strand departed this life, Tuesday, the twentieh day of August 2019 at age 94.  She was the daughter of Henry W. and Catherine R. (Schanlau) Tatro, born the 21st of July in 1925, at Kingman County, Kansas. She had a brother, Mark, two sisters, Pat and Elizabeth and her half-brothers and half-sisters, Gene, Ivo, Bill, Gerald, Catherine, and Mary.  On December 27, 1945, she married Ralph Edward Strand, at St. John Catholic Church, Herington, Kansas, and together they raised their four children, Judy, Linda, Mary, and Mark.  They were foster parents to Devin Thomas.  (Ralph Strand served as Chief of Police-Herington, from 1970 thru 1976.)  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and a good friend to many.

Pauline was a faithful member of the St. John Catholic Church and at one time an active member of the St. John Altar Society and a church circle.   She worked many years as soda jerk at the Boelling Health Mart Pharmacy.  She was also a seamstress at the Paragon and many years ago worked at Herington Hospital sterilizing and cleaning instruments.  She attended school at Neosho County.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, on September 9, 1982; her brothers, Gene Click, Ivo Click, Mark Tatro, William Tatro, Gerald Tatro; her sisters, Catherine Van Dracek, Elizabeth Green, Mary Williams; and her parents.

Survivors include one son, Mark Strand (wife-Elva), Herington; three daughters, Judy Quinn (husband-Larry), and Mary Sader (husband-Lynn) both of Salina, and Linda Ralston of Herington; a sister, Pat Kasha; twelve grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 24, 2019, at the St. John Catholic Church of Herington, with Father Peter O’Donnell, officiating.  Interment will follow at the St. John Catholic Church of Herington, KS.  Family will greet friends 6:00–8:00 p.m., Friday evening,  August 23, 2019, with rosary at 7:00 p.m. at the Yazel-Megli-Zeiner Funeral Home-Herington.

Memorials may be given to the St. John Catholic Church or the Hospice of Dickinson County; and may be sent to the Yazel-Megli-Zeiner Funeral Home, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS, 67449-3038.

Carolyn Johr

Carolyn Johr, age 84, of Manhattan, died Friday August 16, 2019 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

She was born on September 7, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jack and Edna (Smith) Kennedy.

On April 26, 1957 in Cleveland, Ohio, she was united in marriage to Charles “Chuck” Johr. He preceded her in death on August 16, 2005.

Carolyn was a strong woman. She loved to take care of and spend time with her children and all her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She loved to cook for her family, banana bread was one of things she will be remember for making.

She loved to spend time watching TV, from Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, Soap Operas on TV, and also golf and the Chiefs and her home state Detroit Lions. She also enjoyed to knit and crochet.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her children: Michael Johr, Chuck Johr, Pat Johr, and Jackie Cammarn; and also her 3 brothers and her sister.

She is survived by her children: Sue Lapinski Zonts, of Jackson, Michigan, Catherine Cammarn, of Junction City, Mary Walter, of Manhattan, and Roy Johr, of Kansas City, Missouri. Also her 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 am. Friday August 23, 2019 at the Valley View Memorial Park on East Highway 24 in Manhattan.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University or the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
