Wilma Ida (Wendte) Gilmer – February 11, 1922 ~ September 14, 2019 (Age 97)

Wilma’s life began on February 11, 1922, in Ponca, Nebraska.  She is the daughter of George and Lillian (Harder) Wendte.  Wilma is a 1940 graduate of Ponca High School.  She was united in marriage to Howard E. Gilmer on September 7, 1947 in Ponca and they enjoyed 54 years of marriage together.  Wilma was a faithful member of the Eastmoor United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.  She was active and worked a lot at the Marion Senior Center, especially decorating for special events and holidays.  Wilma loved attending the Chat and Dine dinners at Marion County Lake and visiting with her neighbors.  Wilma’s greatest joy was her family which includes her sons Greg Gilmer of Wichita, Jon Gilmer of Tulsa, OK and Brent (Rhonda) Gilmer of Wichita; grandchildren Joshua, Preston, Austin and Kristen Gilmer, Jason (Tara) Lawhead and Jenny (Brandon) Larsen; great-grandchildren Kolton, Jalen, Blake, Kendall, and Jace; her sister in law Peggy Gilmer of Seattle, WA and many nieces and nephews.  Wilma passed away on Saturday September 14, 2019 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard, two sisters, and one brother.  Her family will gather with friends on Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at Eastmoor United Methodist Church where her funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. led by Pastor Darren Frazier.  Wilma will be laid to rest in Marion Cemetery. Yazel-Megli-Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion is serving the family.  Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to Eastmoor United Methodist Church.

Maureen Clarice Holub

Maureen Clarice Holub, 65, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2019, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita due to complications from a heart attack and pneumonia.

She was born with Downs Syndrome along with her identical twin sister, Marian Therese, to Louis A. and Mary A. (Tajchman) Holub of Tampa on July 3, 1954 at St. Luke Hospital in Marion. She lived with her sister, Marian, who was her lifelong companion, in Newton for 38 years under the care of Northview and later, ResCare. She worked at ResCare Industries for many years doing small jobs, such as assembling nuts and bolts, cleaning plastics, helping with recycling and shredding paper. In recent months, she spent her time at the ResCare Senior Program with many friends and companions. She enjoyed painting, coloring, drawing, and doing puzzles and crafts. She had a strong will and loving personality.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Adolph “Ed” Holub and Gerald Lou Holub; and sister, Marian Therese Holub. Survivors include brother, Ken Holub of Tampa; sisters, Rose Mary Brasil of Lakewood, CO. and Kathryn Walker of Coppell, TX; Aunt Sylvia and Uncle Virgil Beving of Ackley, IA; and many friends. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 17, from 6-8 p.m. at Yazel-Megli-Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 18, at 11 a.m. at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen with rosary prayer at 10:30 a.m. led by Father Brian Bebak. She will be laid to rest in the Pilsen Cemetery following Mass. Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Pilsen.

Patricia A. “Pat” Stuckey

Pat (Scalet) Stuckey, 92, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2019. Pat was born March 27, 1927 in Pittsburg KS to Angelo and Margaret Scalet. She graduated from St Marys/Colgan HS and got her degree in Elementary Education from Pittsburg State University. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority at PSU. Pat married LeRoy Stuckey in 1950 and taught school in Pittsburg until they began their family. The Stuckeys moved as LeRoy moved up the ranks at General Adjustment Bureau with stops in Pittsburg, Junction City, Pratt, Topeka and eventually back to Junction City where they purchased the Roy Luke Ins agency in 1966, and formed Cardinal Insurance. Pat worked for Cardinal Insurance for 30 years as receptionist and bookkeeper.

Pat was very involved in various community organizations including Junction City Little Theatre & Theatre Guild, the TATA’s, Ladies Reading Club, Garden Club, GCH Auxiliary (Pink Ladies), Grandmothers Club, PEO, AAUW, Circle 4, Panhellenic Assn & at least 6 bridge clubs. She was a member of St. Xavier’s Catholic Church and sang in the St. Xavier’s and 1st Presbyterian choirs for many years.

Pat was a very active 92 year old. She was blessed with a wonderful group of friends, and was grateful for their friendship and kindness. She loved the theater, and enjoyed shows at all levels. She enjoyed and appreciated JC Little Theater, and felt the same about the Opera House. She loved working in her gardens and she enjoyed being “part of the group”, whether it be within her organizations, or playing bridge.
Pat is survived by her four children, Kent (Lynn) Stuckey of Dallas TX, Scott (Alice) Stuckey of Junction City, Douglas (Kathy) Stuckey of Pittsburg, KS and Gail (Chris) Wolking of Evansville IN., ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Jim Scalet of Tulsa, OK, numerous nieces, nephews and family members.

Services for Pat will include a visitation/rosary on Thursday, September 19th; visitation 5:00-7:30 p.m., rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the Johnson funeral home – 203 N Washington and a Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2019 at St. Xavier’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Pat’s memory can be made to Junction City Little Theater P.O. Ruth Ann Joehnk

Ruth Ann Joehnk, age 85, of Manhattan, died August 26, 2019, at Meadowlark Hills Bramlage House.

She was born July 23, 1934, in Annapolis, Maryland, the daughter of Andrew and Margaret Ann (Fries) Bouma.

Ruth graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland.

She was an Administrative Assistant for Safeway Grocery Stores in the Seattle, Washington, Division for 25 years, retiring in 1994.

Ruth was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Welcome Club of Manhattan, Epsilon Sigma Alpha International Gamma Lambda Chapter and the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program.

She enjoyed doing community service projects at the Senior Center and Big Lakes Developmental Center and volunteering at the Mercy Regional Health Center gift shop.

On July 24, 1954, she was married to Osceola Woodard, they later divorced. She later married John W. Joehnk on February 18, 1984, in Issaquah, Washington. She was preceded in death by Osceola and John; by her grandson John Woodard; and by her great-grandson Isaac Brincken.

Survivors include her two sons: Richard Woodard, DDS, and his wife Rachel of Manhattan, KS, and Stephen Woodard, DDS, and his wife Lisa of Spokane, WA; three grandchildren: Michelle Woodard, Laura Woodard and Christopher Woodard; four great-grandchildren; three siblings: Bertha Miller and her husband Charles of Gainesville, FL, Andrew Bouma, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Salisbury, MA, and John Bouma and his wife Darlene of Clarksville, MA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation is planned with memorial services to be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Pastor Steve Myers officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan, KS.

Carmen “Mickey” Amaro

Carmen “Mickey” Amaro, age 89, of Manhattan, died September 11, 2019, at Ascension via Christi Village in Manhattan.

She was born October 17, 1929, in Manhattan, the daughter of Emmett and Gavina (Escobar) Silva.

Mickey graduated from Manhattan High School.

On June 10, 1950, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church she was married to Teddy Amaro. Teddy preceded her in death on April 13, 1986.

Mickey was a homemaker and was a substitute mother to many. She was always there to babysit when someone needed her, always answering to Nana. Teddy and she were godparents to many in the family as well.

She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and Eagles Auxiliary.

Mickey enjoyed attending all of her children and grandchildren’s sporting events, playing bingo at various establishments and the occasional trip to Las Vegas.

Survivors include her three children: Andrew Amaro and his wife Peggy of Manhattan, Romaine Schell and her husband Tim of Manhattan, and David Amaro and his wife Lucy of Algonquin, IL; nine grandchildren: Steven, Jennifer, and A.J. Amaro, Ashley Waller, Jessica Schell, Amy Miernicki, Katterina, Gabriela and Aleksandra Amaro; 12 great-grandchildren; three siblings: Walden Silva and his wife Louise of Council Grove, KS, Frank Silva of Newton, KS, and Emma Thompson and her husband Roger of Naples, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

Mickey was also preceded in death by three siblings: David Silva, Margaret Casey and Ray Silva.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, September 16th, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Kerry Ninemire as celebrant. Interment will follow in Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday, September 15th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home. A Parish Vigil will be held at 7:00 P.M. Sunday in the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Charles M. Cook

Charles M. Cook, 65, of Milford, KS, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Geary Community Hospital. A funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at the New Church of the Living God with Pastor James E. Johnson officiating. Mr. Cook will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. A visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, September 16, 2019 at the Johnson Funeral Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow the service at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to be given to New Church of the Living God, 1315 W. Ash Street, Junction City, KS 66441,.

Charles was born December 6, 1953, Phoenix, AZ to Katherine Robinson. He graduated from Westwood High School in 1971 Mesa, AZ. Charles served in the United States Army in 1972 and was honorably discharged in 1975.

Charles married Phyllis (Hammond) Currie June 20, 1975, in Junction City, KS.

Charles started his law enforcement career at the Hutchinson, KS Correctional Facility he then worked with the Geary County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sheriff and the Department of Corrections in Topeka, KS. Charles changed careers and was a car salesman for many years working with Racey’s Chevrolet, Dick Edwards Auto, Briggs Auto and Jim Clark Chevrolet.

In year’s past Charles enjoyed coaching Girls Softball in Junction City, he was an avid Kansas University, Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals Fan and he loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren, he loved being outside as well as working in his yard. Charles was a story teller and never knew a stranger, he helped many people and never expected anything in return. He will be missed dearly by his family and so many friends in the community.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis of the home; one son, Brewel Currie and wife Susan of Junction City, KS, two daughters, Antoinette Marie Johnson and her husband Steven of Burlington, NC and Tynika Rochelle Sutton and her husband Larry of Fayetteville, NC; his mother, Katherine Robinson of Phoenix, AZ; one brother, Horace Bell, Jr. and his wife LaVera of Phoenix, AZ; one sister, Bessie Lee Woodruff and her husband James of Phoenix, AZ grandchildren, Matthew Daniel Arevelo, El’Lisa Tychelle Currie, Navon Yoseph Abir Currie, Micah Yonah Amir Currie, Morgan Elon Simone Johnson, Jenica N’Chele Jackman and Bri’el Xiana Jean Currie; one great-grandchild, Joseph Arevelo.

He was preceded in death by his adoptive mother, Bessie Lee Cook, one grandson, Detric Johnson; one granddaughter, Gabrielle Currie.

Kevin Michael Francis

Kevin Michael Francis, age 38 years, passed away September 11, 2019 while in Accord Hospice at Valley View Senior Life, Junction City, KS.

He was born to Kevin Mark and Cynthia (Griffin) Francis on January 9, 1981 in Wichita, Kansas. Later the family moved to the Chapman area where Kevin Michael continued in school and graduated from Chapman High School in 2000.  Prior to graduation he enlisted in the United States Army Reserves. During his military time, Kevin Michael served three tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan. After graduation, Kevin Michael worked various jobs between his deployments – Irish Palace, Customer Service in Alorica, Smithfield Packaging, Commissary, and the City of Abilene.  

Kevin Michael was interested in electronics and enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together.  All his life he was happy, kind and willing helping others. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.

Kevin Michael is survived by his parents Kevin Mark and Cynthia Francis, Chapman, Kansas; brother Ethan Matthew (Ashley) Francis, Wichita, Kansas; sisters June Ann (J.T.) McLaughlin, Abilene, Kansas and Misty Marie (Mike) Nadeau, Calhoun, Georgia, along with five nieces and one nephew.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 17 at the Chapman United Methodist Church, 426 Sheeran, Chapman, KS 67431 with Reverend Ken Trickle officiating. There will be visitation with family beginning at 10:00 a.m. until time of the service.

Rodney C. Lindsley

Rodney C. Lindsley, 54, of Junction City, KS, died in his home September 7, 2019. A private burial will be held in Steele City, NE, at a later date. Johnson Funeral Home of Junction City is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.

Rodney was born on August 2, 1965, in Omaha, Nebraska, to parents Merle C. and Mary J. Lindsley. After the untimely death of Rodney’s father, he became the dependent of his brother, Jim and wife Debbie (Dillon) Lindsley. Jim’s military career brought the family to Hanau, Germany. From there, he graduated from Hanau High School in 1983. He was a star athlete in football and wrestling. Upon returning to Junction City, Kansas, Rodney began his lifelong career of painting. In the 1990’s he moved to Arkansas and built his own painting company. He married and later divorced. During this marriage he had three children: Levi, Luke, and Kathleen Lindsley. He returned to Junction City and worked for numerous painting companies. He settled into his job at Midway Mobile Home Park for many years until new ownership. As of recently, he worked for Morgan Painting.

Rodney had a sense of humor like no other. He was also an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and watching storms. He also enjoyed sports. Rodney was a fan of K.U. basketball, Royals baseball, and Chiefs football.

He will be missed by all who truly knew him.

Rodney is survived by his family: three children Levi Lindsley, Luke Lindsley, and Kathleen Lindsley; his brother Jim Lindsley; his sisters Rhoba Shipp (Danny), Ermel Heuer (Jim), Sandra Champlin (Rob), and Mary Maldonado (John); Debbie and Jim’s children Jamie Lindsley (James), Betty Solis (Jake), Jay Lindsley (Jennifer), Bryan Lindsley; many nieces and nephews; and a host of loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mary J. and Merle C. Lindsley and Debbie (Dillon) Lindsley, both his maternal and paternal grandparents Clifford and Blanche Lindsley and Oliver and Leote Messmer, and three brothers Robert Cornell, Michael Lindsley, and Aurther Lindsley.

Annie Louise Strahl

Annie Louise Strahl, 84, formerly of Junction City, died Sunday, September 8, 2019 at Enterprise Estates Nursing Center in Enterprise. Annie was born September 1, 1935 in Selma, Alabama, the daughter of William T. & Lillian (McKinney) Newsome.

Annie attended schools in Selma.

Annie was a long-time manager of the Holiday Inn Restaurant in Troy, Alabama. When her health started to decline, she moved to California to be closer to her son and daughter. She eventually moved to Junction City, where her youngest son was stationed in the U.S. Army.

Annie married Richard P. Strahl, Sr. in 1957 in Selma, Alabama. They were later divorced.

Annie is survived by her 2 sons, Steve Strahl and his wife Lynne, Bakersfield, California, and David Strahl and his wife Tammy, Junction City; a daughter, Pamela Ferguson and husband Larry, Porterville, California; 8 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren. Annie was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Richard P. Strahl, Jr. in 1994; and 4 brothers.

Cremation is planned.

A Celebration Of Life Gathering will be at the home of David and Tammy Strahl on Thursday evening, Sept. 12, 2019, 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Enterprise Estates Nursing Center, 602 Crestview Dr., Enterprise, Kansas 67441.
