Regents approves tuition hikes for the 6 state universities

The Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) approved tuition rates for each of the six state universities in Kansas for the 2018-2019 academic year.

According to a media release, tuition increases for resident and non-resident undergraduates ranged from 1.1 percent to 2.8 percent, apart from Kansas State University Polytechnic, which had no tuition increase. Tuition increases for resident and non-resident graduate students also ranged from 1.1 percent to 2.8 percent, excluding Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, which had no tuition increase.

“Raising tuition is always a difficult decision that the Regents deliberate carefully,” said KBOR Chair David Murfin. “We will continue to work with the Governor and the Legislature, as well our institutions, to keep higher education as affordable as possible for Kansans.”

In 2018, state universities received a partial restoration of the $31 million reduction in state funding that occurred in 2016. This allowed universities to propose tuition increases that were among the lowest in recent years.

One of the primary responsibilities of the Board of Regents, as defined in state law, is to set tuition and fees at state universities. Based on the tuition rates approved today, it is projected that approximately $743 million will be raised from tuition revenues this upcoming year.

The tuition proposals that were approved by the Board Wednesday may be accessed through the June 2018 agenda here.

Police Seek Public’s help in Identifying Deceased Woman

Junction City police are seeking assistance from the public in identifying a deceased woman whose body was located between two buildings in the area of Second and Franklin Streets on May 28th.

Police stated due to the condition of the body it was hard to provide specific characteristics to the public at that time. They sought assistance from the KBI, who were able to obtain usable fingerprints and a DNA profile. At this time authorities though, still do not have an identification on what they are calling “Jane Doe.”

Junction City Police Captain Trish Giordano said they reached out to forensic anthropologist Dr. Alexandra Klales, with the University Forensic Anthropology Laboratory, who was able to provide a preliminary profile.

Jane Doe is believed to be a white female with brown hair. She is between 40 and 60 years of age and is approximately 5’10. She was wearing a blue – green tank top and blue – green shorts, both size large along with size ten flip flops at the the time she was discovered.

Giordana added they have received several calls inquiring whether this individual could be Ashley Meiss, a missing woman from Ogden. They said Meiss has been ruled out as their Jane Doe by a fingerprint comparison.

If you have information on the identity of Jane Doe or what may have happened to her you can call the JCPD at 762-5912 or leave a tip on the Crime Stoppers website at Gearycrimestoppers.com.

Great Plains acquires new manufacturing space in Abilene

Great Plains Manufacturing

SALINA– Great Plains Manufacturing announced Tuesday they have entered into a contract to purchase a 350,000 sq. ft. building in Abilene.

The facility, located at 2150 NW 8th Street, will enable the company to expand production of its rapidly growing product lines, including Land Pride branded tractor implements and Kubota branded skid steer attachments. Land Pride is a market leader and producer of tractor and skid steer attachments for agricultural, roadside, landscape, and construction industries.

The close proximity of the new building to Land Pride’s current Abilene production facility was a key factor in the selection of this site.

“Our company has enjoyed a strong and a long-term relationship with the City of Abilene. We have talented, hardworking and dedicated employees who live in the area. These employees play a vital role in the success of our company, as well as in their community. We look forward to growing our workforce in the Abilene area and continuing our strong partnership with the city,” states Linda Salem, President and CEO of Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc.

In 1986, the Land Pride Division of Great Plains Manufacturing began operations, and has been in Abilene since 1989 with a fully integrated manufacturing facility encompassing 191,000 sq. ft. The new facility will be a similar, fully integrated manufacturing site with state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities.

“The Land Pride Division has experienced tremendous growth the past five years. This growth has accelerated rapidly since becoming part of the Kubota family of companies in 2016.
